Morphemes matter: A small scale randomised control trial of vocabulary intervention focusing on affixes for adolescents with (developmental) language disorder.

PURPOSE: To investigate whether morphological intervention improves understanding of affixes in adolescents with a language disorder and whether progress generalises. METHOD: A total of 25 adolescents aged 13-15 years participated in this single-blind trial with random allocation. All participants had a language disorder; 18 with developmental language disorder, four with associated genetic conditions, and three with autism. A total of 11 participants received twice-weekly morphological intervention for 30 min with a speech-language pathologist for 8 weeks, while 14 received intervention as u…

Leveraging Large Language Models for Improved Understanding of Communications With Patients With Cancer in a Call Center Setting: Proof-of-Concept Study.

BACKGROUND: Hospital call centers play a critical role in providing support and information to patients with cancer, making it crucial to ef … avily depend on annotated datasets, which are labor-intensive and time-consuming to generate. Large language models (LLMs) like GPT-4, with their in-context learning capabilities, offer a promising alternative for classifying patient intent without requiring extensive retraining. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the performance of GPT-4 in classifying the …

Language Markers of Dementia and Their Role in Early Diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease: Exploring Grammatical and Syntactic Competence via Sentence Repetition.

BACKGROUND: Earlier research focuses primarily on the cognitive changes due to Alzheimer's disease (AD); however, little is known with regard to changes in language competence across the lifespan. OBJECTIVE: The present study aims to investigate the decline of language skills at the grammatical and syntactic levels due to changes in cognitive function. METHODS: We administered the Litmus Sentence Repetition Task (SRT) to 150 native speakers of Greek who fall into five groups: 1) young healthy speakers, 2) cognitively intact elder healthy speakers, 3) speakers with subjective cognitive impair…

The relationship between gamma-band neural oscillations and language skills in youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their first-degree relatives.

BACKGROUND: Most children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have co-occurring language impairments and some of these autism-specific language difficulties are also present in their non-autistic first-degree relatives. One of the possible neural mechanisms associated with variability in language functioning is alterations in cortical gamma-band oscillations, hypothesized to be related to neural excitation and inhibition balance. METHODS: We used a high-density 128-channel electroencephalography (EEG) to register brain response to speech stimuli in a large sex-balanced sample of participants:…

Language, theory of mind and cognitive skills in Arabic-speaking children with and without autism: Evidence from network and cluster analyses.

INTRODUCTION: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by impairments in social interactions, social communication, and repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behavior. Previous studies have reported mixed findings regarding the links between language (i.e., phonology, morphosyntax, lexicon, and pragmatics), theory of mind (ToM), executive functions (EFs), and central coherence measures in children with ASD. METHODS: A total of 163 Palestinian-Arabic-speaking children aged 4-11 participated: 76 with ASD and 87 with typical language development (TLD). The children`s phonological, morpho…

How speech and language therapists and parents work together in the therapeutic process for children with speech sound disorder: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Speech sound disorders (SSDs) are broadly defined as difficulty producing speech sounds in childhood. Reported prevalence of SSD varies from 2.3% to 24.6%, depending on how SSD is defined and the included age range. SSDs that do not resolve before age 8 can have a lasting impact on a child's academic achievements. The intensity of intervention for SSD is important to ensure effectiveness. However, there is a gap between the evidence base for intensity and speech and language therapists' (SLTs) clinical practice. One way that SLTs try to bridge this gap is by working with parents. S…

Imitation of Multisyllabic Items by Children With Developmental Language Disorder: Evidence for Word-Level Atypical Speech Envelope and Pitch Contours.

PURPOSE: Developmental language disorder (DLD) is a multifaceted disorder. Recently, interest has grown in prosodic aspects of DLD, but most investigations of possible prosodic causes focus on speech perception tasks. Here, we focus on speech production from a speech amplitude envelope (AE) perspective. Perceptual studies have indicated a role for difficulties in AE processing in DLD related to sensory/neural processing of prosody. We explore possible matching AE difficulties in production. METHOD: Fifty-seven children with and without DLD completed a computerized imitation task, copying alou…

Sprinting in two languages: Picture naming performance of older Spanish-English bilinguals on the Multilingual Naming Test Sprint 2.0.

OBJECTIVE: The present study examined how years of immersion in a nondominant language affect (a) the degree of bilingualism as measured by picture naming scores and (b) the bilingual disadvantage relative to monolinguals. METHOD: Forty-two older Spanish-English bilinguals named pictures in an expanded rapid administration version of the Multilingual Naming Test (MINT Sprint 2.0) in both languages and completed a language history questionnaire. English-speaking monolinguals (n = 138; from Gollan et al., 2024) named pictures in just one language. RESULTS: Spanish-dominant bilinguals named mor…

Is adaptation involved in bilingual language production? A fresh look at the assumptions motivating potential bilingual-monolingual differences in adaptive control.

One of the hottest debates in psychology-whether bilingual-monolingual differences exist in cognitive control-is at a stalemate. Here we propose that the stalemate could be broken by shifting the research focus from whether those differences emerge to why they should. We offer an example of this approach by testing the assumption of current theories of language-control associations that adaptive control is involved in bilingualism, specifically language production. Unbalanced Italian-English bilinguals living in the Milan area completed a Stroop task in their L1 and a picture-naming task in th…

Basic assessment of chronic cough in primary care and referral pathways of patients to different specialists: plain language summary of publication.

People with chronic cough (a cough lasting more than 8 weeks) are often referred to different specialists and undergo numerous diagnostic tests, but clear guidance is lacking. This work summarizes a consensus (an agreement) among medical specialists who are involved in managing people with chronic cough: primary care physicians (family doctors), pulmonologists (doctors who specialize in lung conditions), allergists (medical professionals specializing in allergies) and ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialists. They discussed how to perform a basic assessment of people with chronic cough in primar

The Feasibility of an Online Language Program Delivered Through Music and the Impact of Dosage on Vocabulary Outcomes in Young Children With Down Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have explored the feasibility of online language interventions for young children with Down syndrome. Additionally, none have manipulated dose frequency or reported on the use of music as a medium through which language and sign can be learned. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to (a) examine the feasibility and acceptability of an online language through music intervention for young children (1-3;6 years) with Down syndrome and (b) compare effectiveness at two intervention dose frequencies. METHOD: The study was carried out in two phases using a mixed-methods de…

Profiling the Roles and Responsibilities of Professionals and Non-Professionals Providing Speech Language Services for Individuals with CLP in Resource-Limited Regions.

Fourteen Speech and Language Therapists/Pathologists (SLT/Ps) from 13 countries across 5 continents made up the International Confederation of Cleft Lip and Palate and Related Craniofacial Anomalies (ICCPCA) CLEFT 2022 Speech Taskforce. Following a group consensus activity led by an external facilitator using Lightning Design Thinking principles, "task-shifting" was identified as the topic for this Taskforce. Absence and scarcity of SLT/Ps in many parts of the world have led to non-SLT/Ps delivering speech and language therapy services to individuals with cleft lip +/- palate. This narrative i…

Development of EMG-based criteria to evaluate the difficulty of realization of sign language: A potential contribution for understanding the negative hand paintings.

The sign language uses a combination of complex finger and wrist configurations. The frequency of use of a particular sign is highly dependent on its physiological difficulty. However, no method allows to quantify accurately this difficulty. In the context of paleolithic negative hand paintings this absence of methods is problematic since the hand signs which are painted may be related to a primitive hand sign language. The objective of this study was to develop and validate a method based on electromyography recordings for quantifying sign language difficulty. Electromyography of the six main…

Follow-up of expressive language and general development at 12, 18 and 36 months for children with no canonical babbling at 10 months.

Little is known about the developmental trajectories in children who do not use canonical babbling (CB) at 10 months. The aim was to examine how speech, language, cognitive and motor abilities developed in children without CB. For 15 children identified as not having CB, consonant production, expressive vocabulary and general development were assessed at 12, 18 and 36 months from audio-video recordings. Twelve (79%) children still lacked CB at 12 months. At 18 months, six (40%) had parent-reported expressive vocabulary results below the 10th percentile, and two (14%) did not use dental/alveola…
