BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia, primarily defined by low muscle mass (LMM), is associated with worse clinical outcomes in chronic liver disease (CLD). Diagnosis is challenging due to the lack of standardized tools. Ultrasound (US) offers a promising method for muscle mass assessment but requires validation against reference methods like bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA).
AIM: To evaluate the correlation and agreement between US- and BIA-based muscle measurements and the accuracy of US in identifying sarcopenia in patients with cirrhosis and a history of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

An extracranial carotid artery aneurysm in a child misdiagnosed as a parapharyngeal abscess is presented. Diagnosis modalities of cervical masses and features of aneurysms are discussed. It is stressed that, regardless of age, in the presence of a pulsating and tender cervical or parapharyngeal mass, an aneurysm is probable. Prior to any intervention, at least non-invasive screening tests must be performed. Failure may lead to disastrous results.

The purpose of this study was to test the reliability and validity of an acanthosis nigricans (AN) screening tool for use in elementary school-age children of different ethnic groups. Cross-sectional data were collected via observation of 288, 5- to 12-year-old school-age children. Three nurse clinicians used a 0-4 grade AN screening tool to rate each child's level of AN independently. We report a survey on urine drug testing within a total of 269 laboratories of the European Union. Clinical laboratories predominated over forensic laboratories (59.5% vs 28.5%).
