The Association of Air Pollution With Pubertal Development: Evidence From Hong Kong's "Children of 1997" Birth Cohort.

Many pollutants are endocrine disruptors with impacts on reproduction and health in animals, but evidence in humans, of which sex-specific effects on pubertal development may be an indicator, is less clear. We examined the association of air pollution in utero and during early life with pubertal development in Hong Kong, China, an area with a high level of air pollution compared with other similarly developed cities. We assessed sex-specific associations of particulate matter less than or equal to 10 μm in diameter (PM10), nitric oxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide in different growth

Prenatal maternal distress affects atopic dermatitis in offspring mediated by oxidative stress.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggests that prenatal maternal distress increases the risk of allergic diseases in offspring. However, the effect of prenatal maternal depression and anxiety on atopic dermatitis (AD) risk remains poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether prenatal maternal distress is associated with AD risk in offspring and whether the mechanism is mediated by reactive oxygen species. METHODS: Two general population-based birth cohorts formed the study. One cohort (Cohort for Childhood Origin of Asthma and Allergic Diseases [COCOA]) consisted of 973 mother-baby dyads

Visual-motor integration, visual perception, and fine motor coordination in a population of children with high levels of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Visual-motor integration (VMI) skills are essential for successful academic performance, but to date no studies have assessed these skills in a population-based cohort of Australian Aboriginal children who, like many children in other remote, disadvantaged communities, consistently underperform academically. Furthermore, many children in remote areas of Australia have prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), which are often associated with VMI deficits. METHODS: VMI, visual perception, and fine motor coordination were assessed using The Beery-Buk

Adverse health effects in children of women exposed in utero to diethylstilbestrol (DES).

OBJECTIVE: Exposure to diethylstilbestrol (DES) in utero is associated with adverse health effects, including genital anomalies in women and men, and cancers in women. Animal studies showed birth defects and tumors in the offspring of DES exposed mice, revealing transgenerational transmission of DES effects. In humans, birth defects, such as hypospadias were observed in children of prenatally exposed women. The aim of this research was to further assess the health effects in children of prenatally exposed women. METHODS: In a retrospective cohort study, the reports of women exposed to DES in

Developmental origins of male subfertility: role of infection, inflammation, and environmental factors.

Male gamete development begins with the specification of primordial cells in the epiblast of the early embryo and is not complete until spermatozoa mature in the epididymis of adult males. This protracted developmental process involves extensive alteration of the paternal germline epigenome. Initially, epigenetic reprogramming in fetal germ cells results in removal of most DNA methylation, including parent-specific epigenetic information. The germ cells then establish sex-specific epigenetic information through de novo methylation and undergo spermatogenesis. Chromatin in haploid germ cells is

Phthalate esters, parabens and bisphenol-A exposure among mothers and their children in Greece (Rhea cohort).

Exposure to endocrine disruptors, used as additives, preservatives, plasticisers and solvents in numerous consumer products, might cause adverse health effects. Humans exposed to these chemicals, metabolise and excrete them mostly via urine. Urinary metabolite concentrations are used as biomarkers of exposure. We evaluated the exposure of 4-month pregnant women and their children at 2 years of age to phthalates, parabens and bisphenol-A. Concentrations of eight phthalate metabolites, six parabens and bisphenol-A were measured in 239 mother-child pairs of the "Rhea" cohort in Greece. Concentrat

A case-control study of environmental exposures for nonsyndromic cleft of the lip and/or palate in eastern Guangdong, China.

OBJECTIVE: To study the relationship between environmental factors and nonsyndromic cleft of the lip and/or palate (NSCLP) in eastern Guangdong for the prevention of NSCLP. METHODS: A 1:1 retrospective case-control study was carried out. Data from 479 children with NSCLP who accepted comprehensive care in our center were recruited as cases from April 2010 to April 2013. An equal number of controls were recruited from pediatrics during the same period. Then we conducted face-to-face interviews with both parents using a structural questionnaire to identify the relationship between NSCLP and env

Neuronal migration is transiently delayed by prenatal exposure to intermittent hypoxia.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal neurodevelopment is influenced by a variety of external factors, although the mechanisms responsible are poorly understood. Prenatal hypoxia, from physiological or chemical sources, can have no discernible effect, or can result in a broad spectrum of abnormalities. METHODS: To mimic some of the maternal effects of smoking, we developed a model that investigates the effects of intermittent hypoxia (IH), with or without concurrent nicotine in timed pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats. RESULTS: We found no significant differences between litter sizes or birthweight of pups from an

Reproductive disorders among hairdressers.

To evaluate whether hairdressers have an increased risk of reproductive disorders, we conducted a historical cohort study in the Netherlands. Because exposure to reproduction toxic agents in hair salons may have changed over time, we studied two specific periods: conceptions in 1986-1988 and in 1991-1993. We ascertained 9,000 hairdressers and, as a comparison group, 9,000 clothing salesclerks from their respective trade associations. All were of reproductive age in the defined study periods. Frequency matching on 5-year age groups ensured comparability with regard to age. All women were approa

Varicella Zoster in pregnancy.

Chickenpox during pregnancy can cause serious complications for both mother and fetus. This includes varicella pneumonia in the mother, fetal varicella syndrome and varicella of newborn. Primary prevention includes vaccination against varicella infection and is part of standard childhood immunisation programme in many countries. Timely post-exposure prophylaxis of susceptible pregnant women with varicella zoster immunoglobulin is key to preventing chickenpox during pregnancy and its adverse fetomaternal sequelae. Antiviral therapy and appropriate supportive treatment improve maternal and neona

Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals Interfere With Leydig Cell Hormone Pathways During Testicular Descent in Idiopathic Cryptorchidism.

Cryptorchidism, a frequent genital malformation in male newborn, remains in most cases idiopathic. On the basis of experimental, epidemiological, and clinical data, it has been included in the testicular dysgenesis syndrome and believed to be influenced, together with genetic and anatomic factors, by maternal exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Here, we analyze how EDCs may interfere with the control of testicular descent, which is regulated by two Leydig cell hormones, testosterone, and insulin like peptide 3 (INSL3).

Postoperative catecholamine resistance following fetal methamphetamine exposure.

Methamphetamine and its related compounds are among the most widely abused recreational drugs worldwide. While a myriad of clinical complications of methamphetamine use have been described, there is a paucity of literature regarding the effects of maternal abuse during pregnancy on neonatal hearts. In this report, we describe a neonate who underwent Norwood-type palliation and subsequently developed catecholamine-resistant cardiogenic shock, likely related to methamphetamine exposure, which recovered after a period of venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support.

Fetal valproate syndrome in a 2-month-old male infant.

Fetal valproate syndrome (FVS) results from prenatal exposure to valproic acid. It is characterized by a distinctive facial appearance, a cluster of minor and major anomalies and central nervous system dysfunction. We describe a 2-month-old male infant with the typical dysmorphic features characteristic of FVS. He had a persistent left superior vena cava draining into a dilated coronary sinus and mild pulmonary hypertension. There was a history of maternal intake of sodium valproate during pregnancy.

Cytogenetics of a renal cell carcinoma in a 17-month-old child. Evidence for Xp11.2 as a recurring breakpoint.

A renal cell carcinoma from a 17-month-old boy with a history of maternal hydrocarbon exposure was found to have a 46,Y,t(X;17)(p11.2;q25) karyotype. Although this translocation has not previously been reported, other translocations involving Xp11.2 have been described, suggesting that this may represent a non-random breakpoint involved in the pathogenesis of childhood renal cell carcinoma. Both chromosomes 3 in the tumor were normal by both karyotype and RFLP analysis.

A probabilistic characterization of the health benefits of reducing methyl mercury intake in the United States.

We developed a probabilistic model to characterize the plausible distribution of health and economic benefits that would accrue to the U.S. population following reduction of methyl mercury (MeHg) exposure. MeHg, a known human developmental neurotoxicant, may increase fatal heart attack risks. Model parameters reflect current understanding of the relationships between MeHg intake, health risks, and societal valuation of these risks. The expected monetary value of the annual health benefits generated by a 10% reduction in U.S. population exposure to MeHg for one year is $860 million; 80% of this

Parental cigarette smoking before and during pregnancy in a cohort of 21 472 pregnancies.

Smoking during pregnancy is one of the leading causes for adverse pregnancy outcomes. We studied parental smoking both before and during pregnancy in a retrospective cohort of 21 472 singleton pregnancies. Although most smoking women (74%) ceased tobacco use, there was possible gestational exposure to maternal cigarette smoking in every fifth pregnancy. Continued smoking throughout pregnancy was more prevalent in the partners (22%) than in the pregnant women (7%). The smoking behaviour of the women, especially the number of cigarettes smoked per day (CPD), before and in early pregnancy predict

Homotypical and Heterotypical Intergenerational Continuity of Child Maltreatment: Evidence from a Cohort of Families Involved with Child Protection Services.

Child maltreatment (CM) in one generation can predict CM in the next generation, a concept known as intergenerational continuity. Yet, the form taken by the intergenerational continuity of CM remains unclear and fathers are mostly absent from this literature. This longitudinal study aimed to document patterns of intergenerational continuity of substantiated CM, on the maternal and paternal sides, by examining the presence of: homotypical CM, which is the same type of CM in both generations; and heterotypical CM, which is different CM types in both generations. The study included all children s

How safe is high-order repeat cesarean delivery? An 8-year single-center experience in Lebanon.

AIM: To quantify the impact of the number of prior cesarean deliveries (CD) on operative complications and preterm birth. Then to investigate the presence of a threshold, beyond which complications tend to be disproportionately dangerous. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort observational study, where data corresponding to all CD done at our service, during an 8-year period, were collected and analyzed. In total, 1840 CD were performed. Patients were divided into five categories that corresponded to the number of CD. Primary outcome was the composite adverse maternal outcome, while preter

Pregnancy-related pharmacokinetics and antimicrobial prophylaxis during fetal surgery, cefazolin and clindamycin as examples.

Antimicrobial prophylaxis during surgery aims to prevent post-operative site infections. For fetal surgery, this includes the fetal and amniotic compartments. Both are deep compartments as drug equilibrium with maternal blood is achieved relatively late. Despite prophylaxis, chorio-amnionitis or endometritis following ex utero intrapartum treatment or fetoscopy occur in 4.13% and 1.45% respectively of the interventions. This review summarizes the observations on two commonly administered antimicrobials (cefazolin, clindamycin) for surgical prophylaxis during pregnancy, with emphasis on the dee

Near-infrared spectroscopy reveals neural perception of vocal emotions in human neonates.

Processing affective prosody, that is the emotional tone of a speaker, is fundamental to human communication and adaptive behaviors. Previous studies have mainly focused on adults and infants; thus the neural mechanisms underlying the processing of affective prosody in newborns remain unclear. Here, we used near-infrared spectroscopy to examine the ability of 0-to-4-day-old neonates to discriminate emotions conveyed by speech prosody in their maternal language and a foreign language. Happy, fearful, and angry prosodies enhanced neural activation in the right superior temporal gyrus relative to
