INTRODUCTION: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are a major public health problem in the U.S., particularly given higher rates among disadvantaged communities. This study examined the impact of minimum wage policies on hypertensive and other obstetric disorders in a population-based setting.
METHODS: This analysis used U.S. national, state-level data from the 1992-2019 Global Burden of Disease study to estimate the associations between changes in state-level minimum wages and the incidence of maternal hypertensive and other obstetric disorders. Generalized difference-in-differences models w

The nutritional environment during fetal and early postnatal life has a long-term impact on growth, development, and metabolic health of the offspring, a process termed "nutritional programming." Rodent models studying programming effects of nutritional interventions use either purified or grain-based rodent diets as background diets. However, the impact of these diets on phenotypic outcomes in these models has not been comprehensively investigated. We used a previously validated (C57BL/6J) mouse model to investigate the effects of infant milk formula (IMF) interventions on nutritional program

Murine maternal obesity predisposes offspring to obesity and other non-communicable diseases. Fetal programming enables researchers to trace this detrimental effect in the early life of the offspring. The aim of the current study was to explore the molecular impact of maternal obesity on the livers of murine offspring at weaning age. C57BL/6 female mice were exposed to a high-fat diet to induce obesity, after which they were mated to produce offspring. At weaning age, the metabolic health of female offspring was assessed and hepatic mRNAs were investigated via mRNA high throughput sequencing.

Vitamin A is essential for embryogenesis, immunity, and gut homeostasis. Vitamin A deficiency is a global health issue, particularly in children and women of reproductive age. This study examines how maternal VAD affects offspring rats' gastrointestinal function and colonic T/B cell immunity. Female rats were fed a VAD or VA-normal diet for 5 weeks before mating. Serum retinol levels were measured via HPLC. Offspring were assessed for growth, gut function, and colonic histopathology. RNA sequencing analyzed gene expression, and immune repertoire profiling evaluated T/B cell receptor diversity.

Although offspring of women exposed to childhood trauma exhibit elevated rates of psychopathology, many children demonstrate resilience to these intergenerational impacts. Among the variety of factors that likely contribute to resilience, epigenetic processes have been suggested to play an important role. The current study used a prospective design to test the novel hypothesis that offspring epigenetic aging - a measure of methylation differences that are associated with infant health outcomes - moderates the relationship between maternal exposure to childhood adversity and offspring symptomat

Postpartum readmissions (PPRs) represent a critical marker of maternal morbidity after hospital childbirth. Most severe maternal morbidity (SMM) events result in a hospital admission, but most PPRs do not have evidence of SMM. Little is known about PPR and SMM beyond the first 6 weeks postpartum. We examined the associations of maternal demographic and clinical factors with PPR within 12 months postpartum. We categorized PPR as being with or without evidence of SMM to assess whether risk factors and timing differed. Using the Oregon All Payer All Claims database, we analyzed hospital births fr

It is unknown if vitamin D (vitD) sufficiency in breastfeeding mothers can lead to physiological outcomes for their children that are discernible from infant vitD sufficiency per se. In a 3-month, randomized vitD supplementation study of mothers and their exclusively breastfeeding infants, the effects of maternal vitD sufficiency were determined on infant plasma concentrations of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (i.e., vitD status) and 11 cytokines. An inverse correlation was seen between maternal vitD status and infant plasma TNF concentration (r = −0.27; p < 0.05). Infant whole blood was also subjected t

Recently, the World Health Organization reported that 20% of all global maternal deaths happened in Nigeria between 2005 and 2015. In developing countries, these maternal deaths are mainly from air pollution. Due to poor facilities and documentation, the extent of danger is not known. This research seeks to estimate the available pollutants and its direct and indirect impact on maternal mortality. Ten (10) years (2010-2019) datasets of black carbon, sulfur dioxide, dust, carbon monoxide, organic carbon particulates, sea-salts, and sulphate particulates were obtained from the second modern-era

Indoor air pollution is a recognized risk factor for a range of negative health outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the association between maternal prenatal exposure to indoor air pollution and the presence of autistic-like behaviors among preschool children. Data were obtained from the Longhua Child Cohort Study in 2017, in which we enrolled a total of 65 317 preschool children. Associations between maternal exposure to four sources of indoor air pollution (e.g., cooking, environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), mosquito coils, and home decoration) during pregnancy and preschool children's a

Bipolar disorder (BD) is linked to a high risk of relapse in the year postpartum. The aim of this study was to search for an association of a mood episode during pregnancy with a lack of maternal improvement after a post-partum episode requiring joint hospitalization. In an observational, naturalist, and multicentric study, 261 women suffering from a BD and jointly hospitalized with their child in a Mother-Baby Unit (MBU) were assessed for risk factors associated with a lack of maternal improvement at discharge. A directed acyclic graph (DAG)-based approach was used to identify confounders to
