INTRODUCTION: This study investigated the timing and risk factors of restenosis (≥50% stenosis) in patients undergoing carotid artery stenting (CAS).
METHODS: This retrospective case series included patients who underwent CAS between January 2007 and December 2022 at a tertiary referral vascular centre in Hong Kong. PURPOSE: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the role of induction chemotherapy (IC) in the treatment of locoregionally advanced sinonasal squamous cell carcinoma (SNSCC).
METHODS: 130 patients who accepted IC between 2010 and 2022 were retrospectively reviewed. After IC, all the patients underwent chemoradiotherapy (CRT)/ radiotherapy (RT) or CRT/RT followed by surgery. We investigated the objective response to IC, the optimal treatment strategy, organ preservation, and long-term survival.

Compared to multiplex PCR assays that are available in the Chinese market, the Acaruiter Respiratory Panel (fluorescent PCR) covers a wider range of pathogens including eight viruses, five bacteria, Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Chlamydia pneumoniae, and has high accuracy and effectiveness in the detection of pathogens. This is the first study to evaluate the performance of the Acaruiter Respiratory Panel. This regent may be a promising assay for comprehensive testing for respiratory pathogens from nasopharyngeal swab specimens in Chinese children.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), a definite tumorigenic virus, is closely related to the development of nasopharyngeal cancer, gastric cancer, lymphoma and other tumors. EBV encodes a total of 44 mature microRNAs, which can regulate the expression of virus and host genes. EBV-encoded microRNAs and their regulated target molecules participate in the biological functions of tumor apoptosis, proliferation, invasion, and metastasis during tumorigenesis and development, and play an important role in the development of tumor.

Mantle cell lymphoma is a rare form of B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that presents as a low-grade lymphoma and has a different prognosis than other types of lymphoma. Mantle cell lymphoma is an aggressive tumor that can manifest as nonspecific symptoms, such as nasal obstruction, dyspnea, and erythematous indurated cutaneous plaques. Diagnosis can be established with confidence using immunohistochemistry. In this report, a case of nasopharyngeal mantle cell lymphoma metastasizing to the skin is discussed.

The NCCN Guidelines for Head and Neck (H&N) Cancers provide treatment recommendations for cancers of the lip, oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, ethmoid and maxillary sinuses, and salivary glands. Recommendations are also provided for occult primary of the H&N, and separate algorithms have been developed by the panel for very advanced H&N cancers. These NCCN Guidelines Insights summarize the panel's discussion and most recent recommendations regarding evaluation and treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Growth medium for isolation of N. meningitidis, which do not require addition of serum and based on previously developed medium for cultivation of bacteria from Haemophilus genus (without growth factors V and X) was constructed. Selective properties of the medium in relation to meningococci were determined by addition of vancomycin and colistin--antibacterial supplement inhibiting growth of nonpathogenic Neisseria and outside microflora. Developed medium was successfully approved during examination of children for nasopharyngeal carriage of meningococci.

Eosinophilic cellulitis (Wells' syndrome) is an inflammatory dermatosis characterized by marked eosinophilic infiltrates. Drugs and various infections are recognized causes of eosinophilic cellulitis. Eosinophilic cellulitis has been reported in non-hematological malignancies in two patients with squamous cell carcinoma and one with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. We report the association of eosinophilic cellulitis with adenocarcinoma of the colon. Curative hemicolectomy led to a complete remission, suggesting that underlying malignancies can trigger eosinophilic cellulitis.

Urethritis caused by Neisseria meningitidis in heterosexual patients is presumed to occur via orogenital contact, but confirmation has not been possible in most cases. Presented here is a case of urethritis caused by N. meningitidis, serogroup C, and the isolation of the same microorganism from the nasopharynx and endocervix of the patient's sexual partner. The similarity of the urethral and nasopharyngeal isolates' electrophoretic patterns, obtained using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, proves the infection was transmitted via orogenital contact.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection has been associated with infectious mononucleosis, EBV-associated hemophagocytic syndrome (EBV-AHS), chronic active EBV infection (CAEBV), lymphomas, inflammatory pseudotumor, lymphomatoid granulomatosis, and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. EBV-AHS and CAEBV are more lethal than infectious mononucleosis with imaging findings of gallbladder wall thickening, pleural effusion, cardiomegaly, and hepatomegaly. EBV infection is also associated with benign and malignant tumors.

We present a modification of a nosebleed catheter or nasal/nasopharyngeal tamponade in case of bleeding from the posterior nasal cavity. A piece of foam rubber from a "moist nose" is cut to size and drawn over the tamponade. The advantage of the method is that it protects the sides of the patient's nose against pressure ulcers and prevents the tamponade from sliding into the naso/oropharynx. Treatment would be meaningfully complemented by continuous intravenous sedation of the patient by combining a peripheral with a central analgesic.

Epstein-Barr virus infection (EBV) was discovered 25 years ago in tumour cells from Burkitt's lymphoma. EBV causes infectious mononucleosis and contributes to the pathogenesis of Burkitt's lymphoma and nasopharyngeal cancer. Atypical courses of the primary infection are attracting increasing attention and may present problems of diagnosis at the same time as no clear diagnostic or laboratory-based definition of the reactivation of this herpes virus is available. The article reports on the clinical course, the diagnosis, and the possibilities of treatment.

Trichomonas vaginalis was isolated from the respiratory tracts of two infants with respiratory disease. Bacterial and viral cultures of tracheal aspirates and nasopharyngeal specimens did not detect bacterial pathogens or viruses; however, T vaginalis was found to be present in inoculated cell cultures. Both infants were delivered vaginally by mothers with known previous episodes of T vaginalis infection. The possibility that this organism may, on occasion, cause respiratory tract disease needs further evaluation.

Lymphoepithelioma is a predominantly nasopharyngeal tumor with some incidence elsewhere in the pharynx. Occurrence in other sites is unusual. This report presents an example of a lymphoepithelioma arising in the vocal cord. The basal cells of the squamous epithelium lining the tonsillar crypts bear a close resemblance to the cells of this tumor, and they are intimately related to lymphoid tissue. It is our belief that lymphoepitheliomas arise from the basal zone and that the basal layer of epithelium even further afield might on occasion produce the lesion.
