Investigating the neural correlates of pathological cortical networks in Alzheimer's disease using heterogeneous neuronal models.

This paper describes an investigation into the pathophysiological causes of abnormal cortical oscillations in Alzheimer's disease (AD) using two heterogeneous neuronal network models. The effect of excitatory circuit disruption on the beta band power (13-30 Hz) using a conductance-based network model of 200 neurons is assessed. Then, the neural correlates of abnormal cortical oscillations in different frequency bands based on a larger network model of 1000 neurons consisting of different types of cortical neurons are also analyzed. EEG studies in AD patients have shown that beta band power (13

Abnormal neural filtering of irrelevant visual information in depression.

The pathophysiology of major depressive disorder (MDD) includes both affective and cognitive dysfunctions. We aimed to clarify how regions regulating affective processing interact with those involved in attention, and how such interaction impacts perceptual processing within sensory cortices. Based on previous work showing that top-down influences from attention can determine the processing of external inputs within early sensory cortices, we tested with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) whether MDD alters attentional ("top-down") effects on the neural filtering of irrelevant, nonem

SK channels gate information processing in vivo by regulating an intrinsic bursting mechanism seen in vitro.

Understanding the mechanistic substrates of neural computations that lead to behavior remains a fundamental problem in neuroscience. In particular, the contributions of intrinsic neural properties such as burst firing and dendritic morphology to the processing of behaviorally relevant sensory input have received much interest recently. Pyramidal cells within the electrosensory lateral line lobe of weakly electric fish display an intrinsic bursting mechanism that relies on somato-dendritic interactions when recorded in vitro: backpropagating somatic action potentials trigger dendritic action po

Human brain activation during phonation and exhalation: common volitional control for two upper airway functions.

Phonation is defined as a laryngeal motor behavior used for speech production, which involves a highly specialized coordination of laryngeal and respiratory neuromuscular control. During speech, brief periods of vocal fold vibration for vowels are interspersed by voiced and unvoiced consonants, glottal stops and glottal fricatives (/h/). It remains unknown whether laryngeal/respiratory coordination of phonation for speech relies on separate neural systems from respiratory control or whether a common system controls both behaviors. To identify the central control system for human phonation, we

Neural circuitry engaged during unsuccessful motor inhibition in pediatric bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Deficits in motor inhibition may contribute to impulsivity and irritability in children with bipolar disorder. Studies of the neural circuitry engaged during failed motor inhibition in pediatric bipolar disorder may increase our understanding of the pathophysiology of the illness. The authors tested the hypothesis that children with bipolar disorder and comparison subjects would differ in ventral prefrontal cortex, striatal, and anterior cingulate activation during unsuccessful motor inhibition. They also compared activation in medicated versus unmedicated children with bipolar diso

Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase gene polymorphisms and the risk of anencephaly in Mexico.

The precise etiology of neural tube defects (NTDs) is not known. There is some evidence that mutations in MTHFR gene provide susceptibility to NTDs in some populations; however, other studies have not found this association. One of the problems with previous studies is that they treat NTDs as a homogeneous group, when specific defects could have different etiologies. We conducted a case-control study specifically for anencephaly, based on the Mexican Epidemiological Surveillance System of Neural Tube Defects to evaluate its association with maternal MTHFR 677C > T and 1298A > C polymorphisms,

Functionally segregated neural substrates for arbitrary audiovisual paired-association learning.

To clarify the neural substrates and their dynamics during crossmodal association learning, we conducted functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) during audiovisual paired-association learning of delayed matching-to-sample tasks. Thirty subjects were involved in the study; 15 performed an audiovisual paired-association learning task, and the remainder completed a control visuo-visual task. Each trial consisted of the successive presentation of a pair of stimuli. Subjects were asked to identify predefined audiovisual or visuo-visual pairs by trial and error. Feedback for each trial was given

Maternal exposure to nitrate from drinking water and diet and risk for neural tube defects.

In this population-based case-control study conducted in California between June 1989 and May 1991, the authors investigated the association between maternal periconceptional exposure to nitrate from drinking water and diet and risk for neural tube defects. The mothers of 538 cases and 539 nonmalformed controls were interviewed regarding residential history, consumption of tap water at home, and dietary intake during the periconceptional period. Dietary nitrate exposure was not associated with increased risk for neural tube defects. Exposure to nitrate in drinking water at concentrations above

Anomalies associated with Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome.

BACKGROUND: To detect the associated anomalies in patients with Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome is clinically important, because early treatment for such anomalies is crucial to both visual and systemic development. This study was conducted to clarify the associated anomalies in the syndrome. METHODS: We evaluated 21 patients with Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome encountered at Nagoya City University Hospital over a 16-year period. Patients who presented with a prominent Schwalbe's line accompanying the iris strands were diagnosed as having Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome. RESULTS: The series consisted of 9 males

On the use of affected controls to address recall bias in case-control studies of birth defects.

Inferences regarding causes of birth defects in humans are often based on results of case-control studies conducted after birth. To address bias in these studies caused by potential differential recall of past exposures between case and control mothers, many investigators have advocated the use of affected controls (babies with birth defects other than the one of interest). To evaluate whether the use of affected controls is warranted for a wide range of scenarios, we analyzed data from a population-based case-control study of birth defects in Atlanta, in which there were 4,918 babies with ser

Monoclonal antibodies to a synthetic peptide homologous with the first 28 amino acids of Alzheimer's disease beta-protein recognize amyloid and diverse glial and neuronal cell types in the central nervous system.

Studies were conducted to identify neural cells that synthesize and/or process cerebral amyloid using antisera and monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) raised to synthetic peptides based on the first 28 amino acids of the amyloid beta-protein. Using rabbit and mouse antisera, and 7 MAbs, sections of neocortex, hippocampus, cerebellum, and spinal cord from Alzheimer's disease (AD), Down's syndrome (DS), and control cases were probed. The antibodies produced 3 distinct immunohistochemical patterns: 1) staining restricted to neuritic plaque and blood vessel amyloid only (antisera, 1 of 7 MAbs); 2) immuno

Cross-Sectional Associations Between Hyperglycemia and Hearing Loss at the Year 35 Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults Observational Cohort Study.

PURPOSE: Sustained hyperglycemia is associated with pathogenic effects on microvasculature and sensory neurons, and diabetes may also affect the vasculature and neural systems of the inner ear. We examined the association of hyperglycemia with sensorineural hearing loss (HL) at three frequency ranges in a biracial, population-based cohort. METHOD: Among 1,930 Black and White men and women aged 53-65 years who were attending the Year 35 examination of the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults study, we assessed hearing using an automated method for testing auditory sensitivity to ob

Ultrasound neuromodulation as a novel dementia therapy-Investigation of possible long-term confounds.

INTRODUCTION: Ultrasound neuromodulation has emerged as a promising adjunctive therapy in Alzheimer's disease (AD), yet a controversial issue remains: whether its reported long-term therapeutic effects could be attributed to potential confounds rather than genuine neuromodulatory mechanisms. Although auditory confounds via air- or bone-conducted sound have been discussed for immediate effects, their relevance for enduring therapeutic outcomes-essential for clinical application-remains unknown. This exploratory study is the first to examine whether long-term cognitive and neural effects of tran

Epicardial adipose tissue as a metabolically active visceral fat depot: an emerging target in cardiovascular disease.

BACKGROUND: Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) is a metabolically and endocrinologically active visceral fat depot with unique anatomical proximity to the myocardium, and is increasingly recognized as relevant to cardiovascular health and disease. Its anatomical position, in direct contact with the myocardium and coronary arteries without an intervening fascial barrier, is consistent with paracrine and vasocrine signaling toward adjacent cardiac structures. OBJECTIVE: This review aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of EAT biology, from its physiological roles in lipid homeostasis, mechanica

Biological heart and brain ageing in subjects with cardiovascular diseases.

INTRODUCTION: The heart-brain axis hypothesis suggests a bidirectional connection between the brain and the heart with relevant implications in health and disease. Cardiovascular diseases have been empirically linked to an increased risk of neurological diseases. However, it remains unclear to what extent different cardiovascular diseases affect brain health quantitatively across subjects and if that is associated with the extent the heart is affected by a disease. Therefore, this study aims to explore how cardiovascular diseases affect biological ageing of the brain and heart by quantifying t

Genetic variation in the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor protein encoding region is associated with higher heart rate variability, but not with neurodegeneration of the brain, retina, and peripheral nerves: The Maastricht study.

BACKGROUND: Degeneration of organ-specific nervous systems precede major clinical conditions such as heart failure, dementia, diabetic retinopathy, and diabetic neuropathy. Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP1R) agonists may have neuroprotective effects, independent of their glucose-lowering effects, and as such may be tools for early prevention of neurodegeneration. We investigated whether genetic variation in the GLP1R protein encoding region, assessed using a genetic score, was associated with neurodegeneration measured in the heart, brain, retina, and peripheral nerves. METHODS: Data fr

Laser Therapy After Repair of the Distal Half of the Median Nerve; a Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND: Nerve injuries resulting from major or minor trauma often cause some disabilities for patients. Neurotmesis, characterized by complete anatomical rupture of the nerve, is the most severe form of the injury which will not recover without reconstructive surgery and nowadays such neural damages are improved by microsurgical procedures. Some studies have used low power laser for nerve cell growth in order to improve the rehabilitation results of peripheral nerves. Low power laser can complement the reformation of postsurgical nerve injuries. OBJECTIVES: The current study aimed to asse
