Experiments have been performed to investigate the ototoxic effects of sodium salicylate administration in anaesthetised rats as recorded by the auditory evoked brain-stem response (AEBR). Sodium salicylate (300 mg kg-1 i.p.) produced time-dependent increases in hearing threshold and decreases in the four principle peaks of the AEBR. Maximum responses were obtained at 4 h post-administration and were highly significant (P < 0.001). In a further series of experiments nimodipine, a calcium channel antagonist which has been suggested as a potential therapy for tinnitus, was administered at a dose

Lateral ankle or foot pain may have various etiologies including entrapment of or injury to the distal sural nerve or early peripheral neuropathy. Antidromic distal sural conduction studies have not been used in clinical neurophysiologic evaluation, however, for technical reasons. The purpose of this study was to determine if by modifying recording parameters and using electronic averaging adequate responses could be obtained to permit standardization of distal sural conduction. Standard surface recording electrodes with an inter-electrode separation of 37 mm were used. The distal sural nerve

In an effort to more fully investigate spinal reflex pathways in humans, we measured the isometric force-time curve of the patellar (PTR) and Achilles (ATR) tendon-tap reflex in 12 college age subjects. We also conditioned the tendon jerk with a contralateral or ipsilateral tendon-tap stimulus, to ascertain the effects of segmental inputs on crossed-spinal reflex activity. The conditioning stimulus preceded the test reflex by 25, 40, 55, 70, 85, 100, 115, 130 or 145 ms. The results demonstrate that a tap to the contralateral patellar tendon produced long-latency excitation of quadriceps motone

"Tiredness", often cited in civil and penal responsibilities secondary to car accidents, hides neurophysiological phenomena which must now be taken into account. The problems of watchfulness in car-driving, is sleepiness, are indeed linked to a genuine disorder in the sleep-wake rythm and attention should be drawn to them in medico-legal cases. Investigations and clinical examinations concerning 110 experts' reports confirm the role played by sleep' disorders in the occurrence of car accidents. Prevention in actually possible. Early detection can take place at various levels and concerns gener

The clinical value in neuropediatrics of [99mTc]HM-PAO brain single photon emission computed tomography was preliminary evaluated by the consecutive investigation of 79 children. Planned epilepsy surgery was the most common indication for the investigation. In 56 children investigated because of epilepsy, SPECT yielded relevant information in 79% of cases examined. The corresponding figures for magnetic resonance imaging and CT were 49% of 35 and 36% of 56 cases, respectively. All 22 children with an epileptic focus, ascertained by freedom from seizures after removal of the area or by consiste

The Rett syndrome (RS) and infantile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (INCL) are known clinically to present with quite similar manifestations in the very first stages of disease. Ten girls, born 1982-85, from the Swedish series of RS, were compared with 6 children with biopsy-confirmed INCL, deriving from 4 families, as to neurodevelopmental, neurological, ophthalmological, neurophysiological, and CT data. The rapid regression at 1-2 years of age with loss of acquired fine motor skill, learned words, and communication were found to be inseparable between the diseases, as were the successively d

Between September 1983 and July 1985, a case-control study was performed of carpal tunnel syndrome risk factors in the general population of Maastricht, The Netherlands, and some surrounding villages. Twenty-eight of the 501 participants were found to suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome. These 28 were added to a series of 128 consecutive carpal tunnel syndrome patients from the same area. The 156 (131 women and 25 men) subjects in whom carpal tunnel syndrome had been diagnosed on the basis of clinical history and neurophysiologic testing were compared with the remaining 473 (310 women and 163 m

The patient in this report sustained a closed-head injury. Within six days of the injury, he demonstrated generalized hypertonicity accompanied by alternating strong decerebrate and decorticate posturing. By Day 10 after injury, normal passive ROM could no longer be maintained using neurophysiological therapeutic techniques. Therefore, we applied plaster casts to both ankles. Within 24 hours of cast application, the patient's general hypertonus had decreased, and by 72 hours after casting, the patient demonstrated seemingly purposeful movements of the left extremities. Although casts have been

Perineal descent is found in patients with idiopathic fecal incontinence and patients with the descending perineum syndrome, who have little or no incontinence but present with a symptom pattern that suggests obstructed defecation. To investigate why patients with perineal descent present in different ways, manometric, radiologic, and neurophysiologic studies were performed in 53 patients with radiologically proven perineal descent and 34 control subjects. Thirty-two patients exhibited incontinence to rectally infused saline, while 21 patients presented with obstructed defecation but exhibited

The effects of the injection of algogenic substances (bradykinin, acetylcholine) into the inferior mesenteric artery were studied at the thoracic level on 47 dorsal horn interneurons responding to cutaneous stimulation. Each unit was characterized by its electrophysiological properties and carefully located within the cord by extracellular injection of pontamine sky blue. Twenty cells, driven only by non-noxious cutaneous stimulation and mainly located in lamina IV, were not affected by the administration of algogenic substances. The activity of 25/27 cells, excited by both non-noxious and nox

BACKGROUND: Major Depressive Disorder with psychotic features (MDD-Psy) represents a severe clinical subtype with distinct psychopathology, yet its underlying large-scale brain network dynamics, as measured by resting-state EEG microstates, remain poorly characterized.
METHODS: We compared 68 patients with MDD-Psy and 63 patients with MDD without psychotic features (MDD-NonPsy). Clinical assessment included the Kangduo Antidepressant Scale (KDAS) and the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS). Resting-state EEG microstate parameters (duration, time coverage, occurrence, and transition probabil

AIMS/BACKGROUND: Timely and accurate assessment of the response to intravenous thrombolysis with recombinant tissue-type plasminogen activator (rt-PA) is crucial for guiding subsequent interventions in acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) offers a real-time measure of cerebral function sensitive to ischemia. This study aimed to investigate the predictive value of ultra-early dynamic changes in qEEG parameters following thrombolysis and develop a predictive model for 24-hour clinical efficacy.
METHODS: We conducted a single-center retrospective analysis of 21

OBJECTIVE: Much has been theorized and documented about factors involved in alcohol use disorder (AUD) relapse during the early months following a recovery attempt where biobehavioral classical conditioning ("cues/triggers") and neurophysiological explanatory theories predominate. Little has been documented, however, about long-term relapse (LTR) factors following sustained AUD remission where self-regulation and stress and coping theories may predominate because LTR precursors are centered less around neurophysiological dysregulation and cue reactivity and more around factors such as lowered

The capacity to reacquire motor skills lost after a stroke is crucial to promote upper-limb motor recovery, but the impact of lesion location on motor skill acquisition and the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms remain uncertain. Cortico-spinal excitability, measured with transcranial magnetic stimulation, provides information about the functional integrity of the cortico-spinal tract, a structure essential for upper-limb motor function and recovery post-stroke. Cortico-spinal excitability is a biomarker that has been used to predict upper-limb motor recovery and guide interventions post

BACKGROUND: Proprioceptive deficits have been shown to underlie motor problems in individuals with a probable developmental coordination disorder (pDCD). Behavioral studies have employed response times to passive limb movement to evaluate proprioceptive function in individuals with pDCD. However, the underlying neural mechanisms involved in the cortical processing of proprioceptive input and its corresponding motor response are unclear. To address this issue, this study aims to investigate neuropsychological and neurophysiological performances using event-related potentials (ERP) on propriocep

Prompt emergence from general anesthesia is crucial after neurosurgical procedures, such as craniotomies, to facilitate timely neurological evaluation for identification of intraoperative complications. Delayed emergence can be caused by residual anesthetics, metabolic imbalances, and intracranial pathology, for which an eye examination can provide early diagnostic clues. The sunset sign (or setting sun sign), characterized by a downward deviation of the eyes, can be an early indicator of raised intracranial pressure (ICP) or midbrain compression, as is commonly observed in states of hydroceph

Sensory deprivation theory is an important hypothesis involving potential pathways between hearing loss and cognitive impairment in patients with presbycusis. The theory suggests that prolonged auditory deprivation in presbycusis, including neural deafferentation, cortical reallocation, and atrophy, causes long-lasting changes and reorganization in brain structure and function. However, neurophysiological changes underlying the cognition-ear link have not been explored. In this study, we recruited 98 presbycusis patients and 60 healthy controls and examined the differences between the two grou

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to utilize functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to identify changes in cortical activity caused by focal muscle vibration (FMV), which was directly administered to the affected forearm flexor muscles of hemiplegic stroke patients. Additionally, the study aimed to investigate the correlation between these changes and the clinical characteristics of the patients, thereby expanding the understanding of potential neurophysiological mechanisms linked to these effects.
