BACKGROUND: One of the indicators to determine the success of TB treatment is the conversion of sputum from smear positive to negative. However, several factors can lead to this failure of sputum conversion.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the risk factors for delayed sputum conversion from the person-in-charge (PIC) of the TB program's perspective.
DESIGN AND METHODS: This qualitative case study was conducted on September 7th, 2022. Thirty-one PICs of the TB program from 31 public health centers (Puskesmas) in Bandar Lampung, Indonesia, were recruited purposively. All participants were grouped i

The nurse can provide information about, and support of, breast feeding. The prenatal nurse can inform the mother of the advantages of breast feeding to herself and her baby. The labour and delivery nurse can aid the mother in her first contact with the baby and reassure the mother who has a Caesarean birth, or a premature or sick infant, that she too can nurse. The postpartum nurse can help breast feeding to continue by providing frequent maternal-infant contact during the mother's hospital stay. The nursery nurse supports breast feeding by refraining from giving the baby other fluids. The pa

UNLABELLED: Undernutrition in young children in developing countries is associated with an increased risk of death. But in several studies, a decrease in mortality was not associated with any decrease in the prevalence of undernutrition.
STUDY AREA: A rural population of Casamance (Senegal) has been under yearly demographic surveillance by The French National Institute of Demographic Studies (INED) since 1985. Between 1960-1964 and 1990-1994, under-5 and child (1-4 years) mortality rates dropped from 312 to 127 and from 201 to 68 per 1,000, respectively. Since 1961, French Catholic nuns who a

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Point-of-care ultrasound (PoCUS) is a cornerstone of bedside assessment in emergency and critical care, providing rapid, radiation-free visualization of anatomy and pathology. Gastric PoCUS offers a non-invasive method to assess gastric content, volume, and motility, informing management of aspiration risk, airway interventions, and enteral feeding. Despite supporting evidence, its use remains limited and poorly standardized. The objective of this scoping review is to map the clinical applications of gastric PoCUS in adult emergency department (ED) and intensive care

School meal programs-in which students receive meals, snacks, or take-home rations-reach over 400 million children throughout the world. They aim to address multiple objectives, most commonly to improve children's nutrition and health and to meet education goals by facilitating and incentivizing children's school attendance and learning. Yet despite their prevalence and evidence of impact, the data available on large-scale school meal programs have historically been fragmented and inconsistent, making it difficult to discern trends over time or compare school meal activities across different s

Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality among individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Although women generally exhibit a more favorable cardiovascular risk profile than men in the general population, this protection is substantially reduced in the presence of diabetes, resulting in a disproportionately greater relative increase in CVD risk among women. Objective: This review aims to integrate the roles of metabolic phenotypes, dietary exposures, and genetic susceptibility in shaping cardiovascular risk in women with T2DM, with a f

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Probiotics are increasingly used in the pet industry to enhance the health and well-being of companion animals. Among them, Lactobacillus strains and their metabolites have demonstrated the ability to maintain immune homeostasis, modulate immune responses, and exhibit antiviral properties. Despite growing interest in postbiotics, non-viable microbial products or metabolic byproducts, scientific literature on their effects remains limited. This study investigates the immunomodulatory and antiviral properties of three postbiotics derived from heat-inactivated Lactobacill

BACKGROUND: Pompe disease is an autosomal recessively inherited lysosomal storage disorder, caused by enzyme deficiency of acid alpha-glucosidase (GAA). This deficiency leads to the accumulation of glycogen in lysosomes and subsequent muscle dysfunction, thus affecting heart and skeletal muscle. Since 2006, enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) is available. The use of ERT during pregnancy and lactation remains a topic of concern due to limited data on the safety of ERT during these periods. Despite this, some previous case reports suggest that ERT is safe during pregnancy and lactation.

BACKGROUND: Despite the wide use of parenteral nutrition (PN) in neonatal intensive care units (NICU), there is limited evidence regarding the optimal time to commence PN in term and late preterm infants. The recommendations from the recently published ESPGHAN/ESPEN/ESPR/CPEN and NICE guidelines are substantially different in this area, and surveys have reported variations in clinical practice. The aim of this randomised controlled trial (RCT) is to evaluate the benefits and risks of early versus late PN in term and late preterm infants.
METHODS/DESIGN: This study is a single-centre, non-blin

The goal of enteral nutritional support for infants born preterm or small for gestational age (SGA) is to achieve normal growth and development. Yet, this is difficult to achieve because of intestinal immaturity. Our objective was to determine if birth weight, protein intake, and the growth promoters leucine (10 g/L) or calcium-ß-hydroxy-ß-methylbutryate (HMB; 1.1 g/L) would affect trajectories of intestinal growth and functions and weights of other organs. Preterm pigs were delivered at gestational day 105 (91% of term) and fed for 6 or 7 days isocaloric formulas that differed in protein cont…

BACKGROUND: Breast milk is the optimal choice for feeding premature babies. However, the prevalence rate of extrauterine growth restriction in preterm infants remains high.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to analyze the macronutrients present in human milk and the correlation with the growth of in-hospital preterm infants.
METHODS: This prospective study is based on data from 99 in-hospital preterm infants younger than 37 weeks of gestational age on an exclusively human milk diet. Infants who had previously received parenteral nutrition were eligible, but they had to have reached f

UNLABELLED: Nutritional approaches may help to preserve bone quality. The purpose of our study was to demonstrate the efficiency of an innovative bone health product (BHP) including micellar casein rich in calcium, vitamin D2 and vitamin K2, to improve bone mineral density.
INTRODUCTION: The aim of postmenopausal osteoporosis treatment is to decrease bone resorption and/or increase bone formation. Because of the slow bone turnover, osteoporosis prevention and therapies are long-lasting, implying great costs and poor compliance. Even if the effects of nutrition on bone are not as marked as tha

Failure of the intestine, whether due to functional or anatomical reasons, constrains Parenteral Nutrition Therapy in children or adults who, as a result of intestinal resections, alterations in motility, diseases of the microvilli or other reasons, present insufficient intestine to cover their needs in terms of nutrients and fluids. Nonetheless, the maintenance of support with parenteral nutrition at home in subjects with irreversible intestinal failure is not without life-threatening complications: liver disease, recurrent sepsis and loss of central routes recommend the assessment of the ind

INTRODUCTION: Long-term survival after massive intestinal resection is now possible with parenteral nutritional support. The expense, morbidity, and inconvenience of this therapy, however, have led to continued interest in alternatives for the treatment of the short bowel syndrome. Patients with short bowel require a multi disciplinary approach over a prolonged period. HISTORICAL CONSIDERATIONS: The history of small bowel transplantation started in 1959 when Lillehei showed that autotransplantation of the small intestine in a dog was feasible. From 1964 to 1971, 7 attempts of small bowel allot…

BACKGROUND: Glycyl-glutamine and glycyl-tyrosine may supply adequate glutamine and tyrosine in amino acid solutions for parenteral nutrition. However, plasma peptides may be transported into the cerebrospinal fluid, exerting effects on the neuronal tissue. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and plasma amino acid concentrations after administration of a glycyl-glutamine/glycyltyrosine supplemented amino acid solution were therefore evaluated in a randomized controlled comparison with a conventional amino acid infusion.
METHODS: Dipeptide/amino acid solutions (0.60 mL/h/kg; 82.2 mg total dipeptides/amin

Understanding potential barriers to physical activity and diet for Hispanics with disabilities is integral to developing effective policies and interventions that support their engagement in healthy diets and exercise. Adequate activity and proper nutrition have the potential to improve structural factor inequities, social determinants of health, risk factors, and health system barriers. There is a scarcity of studies on Hispanic college students living with disabilities. This mixed-method study aimed to identify the perceptions of Hispanic college students living with disabilities towards die

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and obesity, remain major global health challenges largely driven by suboptimal dietary patterns. The Food Exchange List (FEL) is a structured dietary planning tool originally developed for diabetes management to support balanced nutrient intake. Although FELs are widely used across diverse cultural and clinical contexts, evidence regarding their direct role in NCD prevention and management is limited. This scoping review examines the historical development, core principles, and global app

Due to its high nutritional value and increasing global demand, milk powder is susceptible to adulteration for economic reasons. This study aimed to use a portable near-infrared (NIR) spectrometer to rapidly detect and analyze wheat flour adulteration in milk powder, covering both qualitative and quantitative tasks. The qualitative analysis involved identifying the presence and extent of adulterants in the milk powder samples using spectral data. The quantitative analysis aimed to measure the amount of wheat flour accurately added. For the qualitative analysis, we processed the NIR spectral da
