Maquiladoras are plants on the Mexican side of the United States-Mexico border which are used largely by U.S. manufacturers to assemble premanufactured parts. We examined reproductive outcomes of women employed in electronics (N = 120) and garment (N = 121) maquiladora work compared to women employed in the service sector (N = 119) in Tijuana, Mexico. BACKGROUND: Hypertension is a major global risk factor for cardiovascular disease. According to the 2023 Global Hypertension Report, its prevalence among adults aged 30-79 years is 33%, closely mirrored in China at 31.6% (2023 Cardiovascular Health and Diseases in China Report). Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most prevalent malignancy in white individuals and continues to be a serious health problem. Individuals who have sustained exposure to UV radiation are at the highest risk for developing BCC. A follow-up study of chronic conjunctivitis in arc welders in a foundry in Italy was conducted from 1979 up to 1989. Airborne dust concentration in the foundry often exceeded the TLV-TWA limit. The frequency of chronic conjunctivitis was markedly higher amongst the welders than in the unexposed controls (RR = 4.25). In 106 workers aged 18 to 56 years, occupationally exposed to organic solvents of paints and varnishes containing benzene, toluene and xylene for 1 to 122 months, the spontaneous and the stimulated reduction of nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) in neutrophils was estimated. In all the subjects studied, both the spontaneous and the stimulated reduction of NBT was increased. However, after longer occupational exposure to benzene and its homologues the stimulated NBT reduction decreases. The negative correlation between the number of NBT-positive stimulated neutrophils and the exposure time was noted.
