[Transnasal endoscopic orbital decompression in the algorithm of surgical treatment of endocrine ophthalmopathy].

OBJECTIVE: To develop an algorithm for the use of transnasal endoscopic orbital decompression (TEOD) in endocrine ophthalmopathy (EOP). MATERIAL AND METHODS: The results of 225 TEODs are analyzed. 139 patients with EOP were under observation, who were divided into two groups. Group 1 included 64 patients with an inactive form of EOP, group 2 included 75 patients with EOP complicated by optical neuropathy. Group 2 patients are divided into three subgroups. In the first subgroup there were 36 patients who underwent only TEDO, in the second subgroup there were 17 patients who underwent simultane

Postliver Transplantation Rhino-Orbital Mucormycosis, an Unexpected Cause of a Downhill Course.

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted transplantation worldwide in a major way with infections and post-COVID-19 complications contributing to increased mortality and morbidity. We present a case of a 42-year-old lady who developed rhino-orbital mucormycosis in a postliver transplantation period. The initial presentation of the patient was very subtle. She never had overt COVID-19 infection before surgery and in the recovery period. Though cases of mucormycosis in the wound site have been reported, this would be one of the rare cases of rhino-orbital mucormycosis postliver transplantation. This i

Orbital apex syndrome secondary to apical periodontitis of a tooth: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Orbital apex syndrome (OAS) is a rare disease with a noticeable mortality rate. Although its etiology has been repeatedly assessed, few reports have concentrated on odontogenic infection. We presented a rare case of OAS secondary to apical periodontitis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 61-year-old male was admitted to our hospital for a 3-day history of left orbital and head pain, along with diplopia for 1-day. He also had toothache symptoms before his admission. Due to the atypical early symptoms of orbital apex and cranial nerve injury, no timely and effective diagnosis and treatment were

Orbital rehabilitation of a COVID-19-induced mucormycotic defect - A case report.

The surgical removal of the maxilla and the orbit and its content, which leads to degraded esthetics, weakened functioning, and arrested psyche, has caused widespread fury among coronavirus disease (COVID-19)-produced mucormycosis patients. It has been stated that a patient with an ocular deformity due to surgical excision of a mucormycosis infection can be rehabilitated. Obtaining a healthy location for prosthesis acceptance is critical for the success of many resected patients. The advantages of anatomical and mechanical retention were fully exploited. The report includes an appropriate trea

Electron Correlation in the Iron(II) Porphyrin by Natural Orbital Functional Approximations.

The relative stability of the singlet, triplet, and quintet spin states of iron(II) porphyrin (FeP) represents a challenging problem for electronic structure methods. While it is currently accepted that the ground state is a triplet, multiconfigurational wave function-based methods predict a quintet, and density functional approximations vary between triplet and quintet states, leading to a prediction that highly depends on the features of the method employed. The recently proposed Global Natural Orbital Functional (GNOF) aims to provide a balanced treatment between static and dynamic correlat

The Dilemma of Reconstructive Material Choice for Orbital Floor Fracture: A Narrative Review.

The aim of this study is to present a narrative review of the properties of materials currently used for orbital floor reconstruction. Orbital floor fractures, due to their complex anatomy, physiology, and aesthetic concerns, pose complexities regarding management. Since the 1950s, a myriad of materials has been used to reconstruct orbital floor fractures. This narrative review synthesises the findings of literature retrieved from search of PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases. This narrative review was conducted of 66 studies on reconstructive materials. Ideal material propert

[Septic shock induced by latent odontogenic orbital infection: a case report].

A 65-year-old patient was admitted to the hospital due to proptosis of the left eye accompanied with ophthalmodynia and toothache for two months. Ophthalmic examination revealed a palpable mass around the lateral orbit and temporal fossa, and maxillofacial CT suggested a malignant tumor invading the left orbital floor wall. One week later, the patient was diagnosed with left orbital cellulitis and septic shock due to peri-orbit redness, eyelid edema, chest tightness, nausea, vomiting, hypotension, and a marked increase in peripheral blood neutrophil count. The infection was well controlled aft

A Localized-Orbital Energy Evaluation for Auxiliary-Field Quantum Monte Carlo.

Phaseless auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (ph-AFQMC) has recently emerged as a promising method for the production of benchmark-level simulations of medium- to large-sized molecules because of its accuracy and favorable polynomial scaling with system size. Unfortunately, the memory footprints of standard energy evaluation algorithms are nontrivial, which can significantly impact timings on graphical processing units (GPUs) where memory is limited. Previous attempts to reduce scaling by taking advantage of the low-rank structure of the Coulombic integrals have been successful but exhibit hi

Somatic GJA4 gain-of-function mutation in orbital cavernous venous malformations.

Orbital cavernous venous malformation (OCVM) is a sporadic vascular anomaly of uncertain etiology characterized by abnormally dilated vascular channels. Here, we identify a somatic missense mutation, c.121G > T (p.Gly41Cys) in GJA4, which encodes a transmembrane protein that is a component of gap junctions and hemichannels in the vascular system, in OCVM tissues from 25/26 (96.2%) individuals with OCVM. GJA4 expression was detected in OCVM tissue including endothelial cells and the stroma, through immunohistochemistry. Within OCVM tissue, the mutation allele frequency was higher in endothelial

Orbital Venolymphatic Malformation Treated With Sodium Tetradecyl Sulfate: A Case Report.

Orbital and periorbital venolymphatic malformations (VLMs) are benign congenital vascular lesions and constitute 1%-3% of all orbital masses. Widespread facial venous malformations have a high incidence of associated intracranial developmental venous anomalies (DVAs). In such cases, there can be a sudden increase in proptosis following upper respiratory infection or minor trauma. Numerous percutaneous intralesional sclerosing agents like sodium tetradecyl sulfate (STS), bleomycin, doxycycline, ethanol, and OK-432 (Picibanil) have been used for treating VLMs. We hereby report a rare case of ret

Congenital Orbital Glial Heterotopia Associated with Clinicopathological Anophthalmia: A Case Report.

Glial heterotopia (GH) is the presence of glial tissue outside the cranial cavity, without communication with the brain. The orbital location usually presents as eyelid swelling, strabismus, and proptosis. This is considered a congenital location that usually presents at birth. Its association with anophthalmia is uncommon. We report the case of a 2-day-old male neonate with left congenital intraorbital lesion presenting with massive proptosis. No eyeball could be seen. Preoperative magnetic resonance imaging disclosed a large and predominantly cystic mass occupying and protruding from the lef

Sino-orbital foreign body caused by a slingshot injury in a young boy.

Slingshots or hand catapults, historically used as a military or hunting weapon, are common toys among children and young teenagers. Their use can be dangerous as a strike to the eye or orbit can result in significant injuries including blindness. We describe a rare case of a sino-orbital foreign body caused by a slingshot injury in a young boy. The case was managed by a multidisciplinary team involving ear, nose and throat, ophthalmology and paediatrics, and the foreign body of a metal ball bearing was removed using an endoscopic transnasal approach. Although the patient made a good recovery,
