Multiple Dental Inclusion in Monozygotic Twins with Congenital Visual Impairment.

The study presents two monozygotic twins (MZ) with multiple impacted teeth, affecting the upper canines and lower second molars, as well as congenital aniridia. The clinical aspect of the upper canines is peculiar because of the different positions-palatal in one and buccal in the other twin. Studies reporting different scenarios of impaction in monozygotic twins can contribute more data to the debate on tooth eruption aetiology and more so in this case because of the association with a genetic panocular disease. Patients' Concerns. The patients were referred by a general dentist, who diagnose

Pre-operative parafunctional or dysfunctional oral habits are associated with the temporomandibular disorders after orthognathic surgery: An observational cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are frequent and disabling, and hence, preventing them is an important health issue. Combining orthodontic and surgical treatments for malocclusions has been shown to affect temporomandibular joint (TMJ) health. However, publications regarding the risk factors that predict negative TMJ outcomes after orthognathic surgery are scarce. OBJECTIVE: Present prospective cohort study was conducted to identify an association between pre-operative dysfunctional/parafunctional oral habits and the presence of TMD symptoms after orthognathic surgery. METHOD:

Atypical swallowing: a review.

AIM: Atypical swallowing is a myofunctional problem consisting of an altered tongue position during the act of swallowing. High incidence in population, multifactorial etiology and the recurring connection with the presence of malocclusions made it a topic of strong interest and discussion in science. The purpose of this review is to illustrate the current orientation on the topic of atypical swallowing, trying in particular to answer two questions: 1) what kind of connection is there between atypical swallowing and malocclusion; 2) what kind of therapy should be used to solve it. METHODS: Th

Integrated Characterization by EDS and Roughness as a Diagnostic Tool for Dental Enamel Degradation: An In Vitro Study.

In fixed orthodontic treatment, brackets are orthodontic attachments bonded to the tooth enamel, and their placement and removal may affect the underlying enamel surface. Enamel degradation is a critical factor for oral health, as it reduces the mechanical strength of teeth and increases susceptibility to caries and erosion. Accurate diagnosis of enamel changes is therefore essential for the evaluation of preventive and restorative treatments. In this study, enamel degradation was investigated via two integrated methods: energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and surface roughness measurem

Retrospective analysis of the upper airway anatomy and Sella turcica morphology across different skeletal malocclusions: a computerized technique.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the normal volumetric space and variations in the measurements of different landmarks in adults with different skeletal relations of the maxilla and the mandible based on CBCT data. The study also analyses these landmarks to locate any correlations. BACKGROUND: Numerous studies in orthodontics have found a relationship between orthodontic treatment and changes in the anatomy and function of the airway. Severe changes in airway morphology can cause breathing difficulties, lower quality of life, and even result in life-threatening conditions such as ob

Inhibition of osteoclastogenesis by interleukin-33 administration in the periodontal ligament under mechanical loading.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The molecular mechanisms mediating external root resorption are poorly understood. Interleukin-33 (IL-33) expression increased remarkably in the periodontal ligament (PDL) under orthodontic loading. The IL-33-driven responses are delicately cell type- and tissue context-dependent. It is unknown how IL-33 act on osteoclastogenesis in the context of root surface. This study aimed to investigate the effect of IL-33 on osteoclastogenesis in the PDL under mechanical loading. MATERIALS AND METHODS: C57BL/6J mice were treated with injections of phosphate buffer saline (PBS
