Characteristics and patterns of pediatric chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy: A systematic review.

This systematic review provides a high-quality synthesis of the empirical evidence regarding chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) characteristics and patterns described in studies of children who received neurotoxic chemotherapy to treat cancer. PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Embase were searched for articles published 2009 - 2019, yielding 861. Forty-two papers met the eligibility criteria, including 31 that described characteristics and patterns of vincristine-induced CIPN. Fifty-seven percent of articles were of low to moderate quality; measurement flaws were the most common lim

Pressure algometry over normal muscles. Standard values, validity and reproducibility of pressure threshold.

Pressure threshold is the minimal pressure (force) which induces pain. The pressure threshold meter (PTM) is a force gauge with a rubber disc of 1 cm2 surface. The instrument has been proven to be useful in clinical practice for quantification of deep muscle tenderness. Trigger points, fibrositis, myalgic spots, activity of arthritis as well as assessment of sensitivity to pain can be diagnosed by PTM. This study therefore established standards for pressure threshold as well as the reproducibility and validity of measurement in 24 male and 26 female normal volunteers at 9 sites. Muscles freque

Real-Time Symptom and Wearable Monitoring May Improve Prediction of Postoperative Recovery in Lumbar Spine Surgery Beyond Standard Measures.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Accurately identifying candidates likely to benefit from surgery and addressing modifiable preoperative risk factors are central to optimizing outcomes. Current prediction tools often rely on static clinical data and patient-reported measures, which lack granularity for precision risk stratification. This study aims to determine whether preoperative mobile health (mHealth) assessments combining ecological momentary assessment (EMA) and wearable biometric monitoring improve prediction of postoperative outcomes after lumbar spine surgery. METHODS: Patients aged 21 to

Superficial intercostal plane blocks for post-sternotomy pain control rationale and design for the EPOCH CardioLink-10 randomized clinical trial.

PURPOSE OF THE TRIAL: Inadequate pain control following cardiac surgery remains a significant clinical and socioeconomic burden. Superficial parasternal intercostal plane (SPIP) blocks are not widely utilized for reducing pain and opioid consumption post-cardiac surgery because the available evidence is weak and inconsistent. METHODS: The double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter EPOCH CardioLink-10 trial was designed to evaluate how continuous bilateral SPIP blocks affect opioid consumption and recovery-related endpoints among individuals who have undergone cardiac surgery via median ste

Pain at the end of life in patients with cancer: a population-based study on prevalence, relief, and the role of pain assessment.

BACKGROUND: Pain is common in advanced cancer, and its assessment is recognized as crucial for effective management. However, real-world evidence on pain prevalence, relief, and the impact of structured pain assessment across cancer types at the end of life remains limited. METHODS: We analyzed data from 215,317 patients who died from cancer reported to the Swedish Register of Palliative Care (2011-2023). Data are based on validated end-of-life questionnaires completed by healthcare providers after the patient's death. Patient characteristics and provider-reported pain outcomes (prevalence of

A Potential Link Between Preoperative Inflammation Biomarkers and Acute Postoperative Pain Following VATS.

OBJECTIVES: Postoperative pain is common after video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS). Recent evidence suggest that preoperative inflammatory biomarkers might be associated to chronic postoperative pain following major surgery, but the association between preoperative inflammation and acute pain after VATS have not been examined. This observational cohort study aimed to investigate the association between preoperative inflammatory biomarkers and acute postoperative pain in lung cancer patients undergoing VATS. METHODS: Preoperative plasma samples from cancer patients scheduled for VATS were a

Suzetrigine (a NaV1.8 inhibitor) versus placebo for acute postoperative pain: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: NaV1.8 channels, expressed in peripheral nociceptors, mediate sustained pain signaling. Their inhibition offers a potential opioid-sparing strategy for postoperative pain, although efficacy and safety remain incompletely defined. We synthesized randomized evidence for suzetrigine versus placebo in postoperative pain. METHODS: We conducted a Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses-compliant meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials comparing suzetrigine (a NaV1.8 inhibitor) versus placebo in surgical patients. The primary outcome was 24-hour pain with
