Health system strengthening recommendations for lung cancer care: lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic.

We explore how the COVID-19 pandemic amplified barriers across the lung cancer care continuum in Mexico. Drawing from a cross-sectional qualitative arm of a mixed-methods study (N = 46), interviews were conducted with lung cancer patients at the Mexican National Cancer Institute between 2020 and 2021. Using thematic analysis, patients reported care delays due to fear of infection, unclear communication, and service disruptions. Thematic patterns revealed that these challenges were compounded by financial hardship, emotional distress, and reluctance to seek care. Key policy and practice implica

Post-hoc evaluation of travel restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan, 2020-2022.

BACKGROUND: From February 2020, Japan began implementing travel restrictions against COVID-19. Because such restrictions inevitably have a socioeconomic impact, it is vital to evaluate the impact of the reduced international travel volume. We retrospectively evaluated travel restrictions implemented against COVID-19 in Japan during 2020-2022 by analyzing entry screening results and building a counterfactual model. METHODS: By analyzing weekly numbers of tests and positive test results (October 2020-October 2022) and the total number of border entries by month (2017-2019), we performed a causa

The Impacts of the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic on Incarceration Dynamics and Racial Disparities in North Carolina Jails.

Disruptions to the US criminal legal system during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic temporarily reduced the numbers of people in prisons while exacerbating racial disparities in their populations, increasing the percentage of incarcerated people who are Black. Less is known about jail populations, including disparate impacts by race. We used web-scraped data from the publicly available rosters of North Carolina (NC) jails to examine their population sizes, admission and release rates, and racial composition during 2020-2022. Data were available from 45 jails (of 93 total in NC) representing 194,230 inc

Inequities in food access during the COVID-19 pandemic: A multilevel, mixed methods pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Innovative data integration may serve to inform rapid, local responses to community needs. We conducted a mixed methods pilot study among communities of color or low-income in the San Francisco Bay Area amid the COVID-19 pandemic to assess a hypothesized data model to inform rapid response efforts. METHODS: Between 2020-2021, we collected (1) qualitative data through neighborhood reports submitted via Streetwyze, a mobile neighborhood mapping platform; (2) survey data on social and economic circumstances; and (3) geospatial data among residents of three counties. Qualitative data

Cancer care disruptions among vulnerable populations during the COVID-19 pandemic: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Infectious disease outbreaks, particularly COVID-19, have disrupted cancer care worldwide and disproportionately affected vulnerable populations. OBJECTIVE: To identify vulnerable groups and characterize patterns of disruption in cancer screening and treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Following the Arksey and O'Malley framework, we conducted a scoping review of studies published between 2002 and 2023. Searches were performed in MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar. Thirty-four studies were included and analyzed with a focus on healthcare utiliza

Changes in young children's behavior following COVID-19 pandemic onset: A tale of three cities.

Several reports have described increases in children's behavior problems since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, but few were based on prospective data or represented groups who disproportionately experienced pandemic-related hardships. This study followed low-income and racially diverse young children from 3 U.S. cities-New York, NY, Pittsburgh, PA, and Tulsa, OK-with repeated measures of child behavior between 2016 and 2023. A total of 1,124 children were included (50% female; 48% Hispanic/Latine; 30% Black; 22% White/Other race/ethnicity; aged 3-7 at pandemic onset). Results reveal differ

Insight into Post-Pandemic Needs in Healthcare and Well-Being Among Francophone Families in the Canadian Prairies.

Francophone populations outside Quebec were disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 crisis. Despite French being one of Canada's official languages, access to information and services in French remains limited. This study examined Francophone families' (FF) post-pandemic health and well-being needs (PPHW) in the Canadian Prairie provinces. An online survey assessed PPHW needs among 319 FF in Alberta (AB), Saskatchewan (SK), and Manitoba (MB). Respondents ranked PPHW needs from a predefined list; logistic regression analyzed socio-demographic influences. Divided into AB/SK and MB cohorts, s

This study aims to identify, describe and analyze the policies enacted by the Peruvian health authorities to address the population mental health needs and adequate health services in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted an scoping review of mental health-related policies published between 6 March 2020 (first case of COVID-19 in Peru) and 31 May 2023. The official websites of the Peruvian Government, the Social Security Health System (EsSalud), and the LILACS scientific database were used. Data was analyzed using content and thematic analysis. The longitudinal trajectories of mental health outcomes in healthcare workers in England during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic raised concerns about the mental health of an already burdened healthcare workforce. This study examined mental health trajectories among healthcare workers (HCWs) across the pandemic and identified personal and employment factors associated with different symptom patterns. Growth curve and growth mixture models identified latent classes of HCWs characterized by distinct trajectories of probable comm

The psychological ability to adopt recommended coping responses reduced infections during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, a key question for researchers and authorities was to understand the psychological motivations that sustained public engagement in protective behavior such as physical distancing and hygienic protection. While feelings of threat were rampant during the pandemic, theories of health psychology have highlighted appraisals related to the ability to cope (e.g., the feeling of being able to adhere cost-effectively to government advice) and argued that coping appraisals are superior predictors of motivations to protect the self against risks. In this study, we conducted
