Mouse peritoneal exudate cell reactions to parasitic worms. I. Cell adhesion reactions.

The nature of white cell adhesion to parasitic nematodes is little understood, although it has been widely observed and is considered to have an immunological basis. This paper presents comparative observations on white cell adhesions to several worm species occurring in non-sensitized parasite-free mice and in sensitized infected mice. Cell adhesions occurred in both types of animals. The adhering cell type is a large mononucleocyte of the lymphoid macrophage system, which stains with pyronin only when recovered from a sensitized mouse.

High diversity and novel host associations of bat haemosporidian parasites in Cambodia: insights from a nationwide bat survey and multilocus analyses.

BACKGROUND: Haemosporidian ("malaria") parasites are a diverse group of vector-borne apicomplexan parasites that infect a wide range of vertebrate hosts, including humans. Bats harbour a remarkable diversity of haemosporidians and are considered important hosts in the evolution of mammalian haemosporidian lineages, yet parasite diversity, host associations, and evolutionary relationships remain poorly understood, particularly in biodiversity-rich Southeast Asia. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide molecular survey of 1180 bats representing 34 species across Cambodia and combined extensive samp…

Helminth parasites of characiform fishes from farming systems in the states of Acre and Maranhão, Western Amazonia and Northeastern regions, Brazil.

Aquaculture has been recognized as one of the main solutions to the growing global food demand, as well as a significant resource for addressing the limitations imposed on wild fisheries. The most important fish species for Brazilian fish farming is Colossoma macropomum due to its zootechnical characteristics, economic and cultural importances. In cultivated systems, the presence of parasites can represent a major problem. Under these conditions, parasites of the phyla Acanthocephala and Platyhelminthes are commonly found parasitizing farmed fishes. This study aimed to investigate the helminth…

Red pulp macrophages clear parasites, while marginal metallophilic and marginal zone macrophages support CD4+ T cell activation during Plasmodium yoelii infection.

Malaria, caused by the parasite Plasmodium spp., remains the most prevalent and dangerous vector-borne infectious disease worldwide. Effective pathogen clearance during malaria hinges on the interplay between adaptive and innate immune responses, especially on T cells, B cells, antigen-presenting cells (APCs) and IFNγ response. In a previous study, we demonstrated that dendritic cell (DC) depletion resulted in impaired T cell responses. However, substantial CD4+ and CD8+ T cell activation was still detectable, suggesting that other APCs compensate for the lack of DCs. In the present study, we

Food Waste Compost as a Tool of Microbiome-Assisted Agri-Culture for Sustainable Protection of Vegetable Crops Against Soil-Borne Parasites.

A low-scale Food Waste Compost (FWC1), characterized by optimal physic-chemical parameters and high organic matter percentages, was used as a fertilizer and a bio-stimulant for vegetable plants. Groups of treated plants were inoculated with active juveniles of root-knot nematodes to detect the effect on plant defense. Optimal amounts of compost mixed with soil increased plant biomass 30% compared to untreated plants. Moreover, when plants were inoculated, treated roots contained about 50% less sedentary forms (SFs) of nematodes and a lower reproduction rate of the parasites than untreated plan…

Efficacy of a Topical Esafoxolaner, Eprinomectin and Praziquantel Combination Against Most Commonly Found Metazoan Parasites of Client-Owned Cats in Greece.

Feline parasitism affects animals' health and welfare. Faeces from 472 client-owned cats from Greece were examined to provide updated data on the epizootiology of metazoan endo- and ectoparasites (namely, Toxocara cati, Ancylostomatidae, Dipylidium caninum, lungworms, Toxascaris leonina, Otodectes cynotis, fleas, ticks and Notoedres cati). All positive animals received a topical formulation containing esafoxolaner, eprinomectin and praziquantel (NexGard® Combo, Boehringer Ingelheim), and its efficacy was evaluated. The overall prevalence of parasitism was 22.9%, while that of multiparasitism w…

In Vitro Anthelmintic Effect of Selected Agents Against Microcotyle sebastis and Microcotyle caudata, the Gill Monogenean Parasites of Rockfish, Sebastes spp.

The in vitro efficacy of various anthelminthic agents was investigated against adults and eggs of the Microcotyle sebastis and M. caudata. Praziquantel (PZQ), ivermectin (IVM), trichlorfon (TCF), fenbendazole (FNBZ), febantel (FBT), flubendazole (FLBZ), thiabendazole (TBZ), formalin, hydrogen peroxide and sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) were selected as test agents. The hatching rate of M. sebastis and M. caudata eggs was significantly reduced by formalin (200, 300 mg/L), hydrogen peroxide (50-200 mg/L) and NaOCl (75-200 mg/L) treatment. However, seven anthelminthic agents, including PZQ, did not
