Correlation of air pollution and risk of sudden sensorineural hearing loss: a Mendelian randomization study.

Numerous compelling epidemiological studies have linked air pollution to Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SSNHL). However, the causal relationship behind this association has not yet been established. We employed a Two-Sample Mendelian Randomization (MR) approach to investigate the causal relationship between air pollution (nitrogen dioxide, nitrogen oxides, PM2.5, PM10, and PM2.5-10) and SSNHL.Independent genetic variants associated with air pollution and SSNHL were selected as instrumental variables (IVs) at a genome-wide significance level. All summary data were obtained from GWAS databas

Air Pollution Exposure and Birth Weight in the ECHO Cohort.

IMPORTANCE: Prior studies report negative associations between prenatal exposure to fine particulate matter (ie, aerodynamic diameter <2.5 µg; PM2.5) and birth weight, but have typically averaged exposure across pregnancy, which may not reveal windows of susceptibility. OBJECTIVE: To identify windows of prenatal susceptibility to PM2.5. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a retrospective analysis of a prospectively enrolled cohort study. Participants were enrolled at 1 of 50 sites participating in the US Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes Cohort. The study included ful…

Air pollutants and risk of incident upper gastrointestinal bleeding events: A large prospective cohort study.

Currently, most population studies on air pollutants and gastrointestinal health focus on outcomes like chronic gastritis or gastrointestinal cancers, while evidence linking air pollutants to upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) risk remains unclear. This large prospective cohort study investigated the associations between long-term exposure to ambient air pollutants and the risk of UGIB by utilizing data from 432,773 participants in the UK Biobank, with a median follow-up period of 13.11 years. Cox proportional hazards models were used adjusting for demographic, lifestyle, and socioeconomic

AMPK agonist AICAR ameliorates maternal hepatic lipid metabolism disorder, inflammation, and fibrosis caused by PM2.5 exposure during pregnancy.

Liver is an important target organ of ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5). Numerous studies have shown that PM2.5 exposure can cause liver lipid metabolism disorders and other liver damage in mammals. However, the impact of PM2.5 on liver health during pregnancy, a sensitive life stage, remains understudied, and the underlying mechanisms are also unknown. Given the critical role of adenosine 5'-monophosphate activated protein kinase (AMPK) in regulating lipid metabolism and inflammation, we hypothesize that AMPK activation may mitigate maternal hepatic lipid metabolism disorders, reduce in…

Associations of air PM2.5 level with gut microbiota in Chinese Han preschoolers and effect modification by oxytocin receptor gene polymorphism.

Variations in the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the oxytocin receptors (OXTR) indicate individual differences in stress response, social behavior, and psychopathology, but very few paper mentioned OXTR as part of the mechanism linking exposure to air pollution and poor social interactions. The authors investigated the moderating role of Oxytocin receptor (OXTR) rs53576 polymorphism in the relationship between PM2.5 level and gut microbiota in children, in an attempt to provide some reference for the evidence linking biological and environmental factors to children brain development

Ambient air pollution during pregnancy and DNA methylation in umbilical cord blood, with potential mediation of associations with infant adiposity: The Healthy Start study.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal exposure to ambient air pollution has been associated with adverse offspring health outcomes. Childhood health effects of prenatal exposures may be mediated through changes to DNA methylation detectable at birth. METHODS: Among 429 non-smoking women in a cohort study of mother-infant pairs in Colorado, USA, we estimated associations between prenatal exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and ozone (O3), and epigenome-wide DNA methylation of umbilical cord blood cells at delivery (2010-2014). We calculated average PM2.5 and O3 in each trimester of pregnancy an…

Prenatal and early life exposure to air pollution and the incidence of Kawasaki disease.

Kawasaki disease (KD) is the most common form of acquired pediatric cardiac disease in the developed world. However, its etiology is still unclear. Epidemiological studies have shown that air pollution is a plausible risk factor in stimulating oxidative stress, inducing inflammation and causing autoimmune diseases. This study aims to assess the connections between prenatal and early life air pollution exposure to the incidence of KD. The main data source of this nationwide longitudinal study was the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) of Taiwan. NHIRD was linked with Taiwan Mat
