Prognostic Impact of Pathology, Cytoreduction, and Tumor Markers in Pseudomyxoma Peritonei.

INTRODUCTION: The pathologic classification of pseudomyxoma peritonei is controversial. This study aimed to standardize the histopathological evaluation of pseudomyxoma peritonei and identify the clinicopathological factors associated with survival. METHODS: A pathologic review was performed to systematize the pathology report and verify the relationship between clinical features and survival. Terminology was based on the World Health Organization and Peritoneal Surface Oncology Group International definitions. Preoperative serum levels of carcinoembryonic antigen, CA19-9, and CA-125 were eva…

Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on diagnostic pathology in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has a huge impact on healthcare provided. The nationwide pathology registry of the Netherlands, PALGA, offers an outstanding opportunity to measure this impact for diseases in which pathology examinations are involved. METHODS: Pathology specimen numbers in 2020 were compared with specimen numbers in 2019 for 5 periods of 4 weeks, representing two lockdowns and the periods in between, taking into account localization, procedure and benign versus malignant diagnosis. RESULTS: The largest decrease was seen during the first lockdown (spring 2020), when numbers …

Circulating fibrillin fragment concentrations in patients with and without aortic pathology.

OBJECTIVE: Fragments of fibrillin-1 and fibrillin-2 will be detectable in the plasma of patients with aortic dissections and aneurysms. We sought to determine whether the plasma fibrillin fragment levels (PFFLs) differ between patients with thoracic aortic pathology and those presenting with nonaortic chest pain. METHODS: PFFLs were measured in patients with thoracic aortic aneurysm (n = 27) or dissection (n = 28). For comparison, patients without aortic pathology who had presented to the emergency department with acute chest pain (n = 281) were categorized into three groups according to the …

Pathology of Crooke Cells in the Human Pituitaries: A Timely Review.

Crooke cell change was first found in the regressed and suppressed corticotroph (adrenocorticotropic hormone-producing) cells, and now is known to occur in pituitary tumors. The tumor cells of this type can be recognized by morphology with immunohistochemistry, and are well known to predict aggressive behavior such as invasion and rare metastases. This is one of the representative neuroendocrine tumors in the pituitary which is now considered to have malignant potential as proposed in the pancreas and gastrointestinal tracts. It is important to emphasize the pituitary tumor pathology such as C…

Depletion of skeletal muscle satellite cells attenuates pathology in muscular dystrophy.

Skeletal muscle can repair and regenerate due to resident stem cells known as satellite cells. The muscular dystrophies are progressive muscle wasting diseases underscored by chronic muscle damage that is continually repaired by satellite cell-driven regeneration. Here we generate a genetic strategy to mediate satellite cell ablation in dystrophic mouse models to investigate how satellite cells impact disease trajectory. Unexpectedly, we observe that depletion of satellite cells reduces dystrophic disease features, with improved histopathology, enhanced sarcolemmal stability and augmented musc…

Transdiagnostic Associations With Interpersonal and Affective Variability in Borderline Personality Pathology.

Emotional and behavioral variability are unifying characteristics of borderline personality disorder (BPD). Ambulatory assessment (AA) has been used to quantify this variability in terms of the categorical BPD diagnosis, but evidence suggests that BPD instead reflects general personality pathology. This study aimed to clarify the conceptualization of BPD by mapping indices of variability in affect, interpersonal behavior, and perceptions of others onto general and specific dimensions of personality pathology. A sample of participants who met diagnostic criteria for BPD (n = 129) and healthy co…

Effect of olfactory bulb pathology on olfactory function in normal aging.

Decline of olfactory function is frequently observed in aging and is an early symptom of neurodegenerative diseases. As the olfactory bulb (OB) is one of the first regions involved by pathology and may represent an early disease stage, we specifically aimed to evaluate the contribution of OB pathology to olfactory decline in cognitively normal aged individuals without parkinsonism or dementia. This clinicopathological study correlates OB tau, amyloid β (Aβ) and α-synuclein (αSyn) pathology densities and whole brain pathology load to olfactory identification function as measured with the Univer…

Regional associations of white matter hyperintensities and early cortical amyloid pathology.

White matter hyperintensities (WMHs) have a heterogeneous aetiology, associated with both vascular risk factors and amyloidosis due to Alzheimer's disease. While spatial distribution of both amyloid and WM lesions carry important information for the underlying pathogenic mechanisms, the regional relationship between these two pathologies and their joint contribution to early cognitive deterioration remains largely unexplored. We included 662 non-demented participants from three Amyloid Imaging to Prevent Alzheimer's disease (AMYPAD)-affiliated cohorts: EPAD-LCS (N = 176), ALFA+ (N = 310), and

Perivascular Space Predicts Brain Hypometabolism of Individuals with Underlying Amyloid Pathology.

BACKGROUND: Reduced signal on fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) is a valid proxy for neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Perivascular space (PVS) is believed to be associated with AD pathology and cognitive decline. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the associations of PVS with FDG-PET and cognitive performance based on the burden of amyloid pathology. METHODS: We used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). MRI-visible PVS in basal ganglia (BG) and centrum semi-oval (CSO) were visually cla…

Amyloidosis: What does pathology offer? The evolving field of tissue biopsy.

Since the mid-nineteenth century pathology has followed the convoluted story of amyloidosis, recognized its morphology in tissues and made identification possible using specific staining. Since then, pathology studies have made a significant contribution and advanced knowledge of the disease, so providing valuable information on the pathophysiology of amyloid aggregation and opening the way to clinical studies and non-invasive diagnostic techniques. As amyloidosis is a heterogeneous disease with various organ and tissue deposition patterns, histology evaluation, far from offering a simple yes/…

RETRACTED: Neuroinflammatory Markers: Key Indicators in the Pathology of Neurodegenerative Diseases.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Neuroinflammation, a protective response of the central nervous system (CNS), is associated with the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases. The CNS is composed of neurons and glial cells consisting of microglia, oligodendrocytes, and astrocytes. Entry of any foreign pathogen activates the glial cells (astrocytes and microglia) and overactivation of these cells triggers the release of various neuroinflammatory markers (NMs), such as the tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interleukin-1β (IL-10), nitric oxide (NO), and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), among others. Various stu

Monomeric C-reactive protein induces the cellular pathology of Alzheimer's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Human study shows that elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) in blood impacts apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4, but not APOE ε3 or APOE ε2, genotype to increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, whether CRP is directly involved in cellular AD pathogenesis and in which type of neuronal cells of APOE ε4 carriers are unknown. METHODS: We aimed to use different primary neuronal cells and investigate if CRP induces cellular AD pathology depending on APOE genotypes. Here the different primary neuronal cells from the different APOE genotype knock-in mice cortex were isolated and use…

AGC1 Deficiency: Pathology and Molecular and Cellular Mechanisms of the Disease.

AGC1/Aralar/Slc25a12 is the mitochondrial carrier of aspartate-glutamate, the regulatory component of the NADH malate-aspartate shuttle (MAS) that transfers cytosolic redox power to neuronal mitochondria. The deficiency in AGC1/Aralar leads to the human rare disease named "early infantile epileptic encephalopathy 39" (EIEE 39, OMIM # 612949) characterized by epilepsy, hypotonia, arrested psychomotor neurodevelopment, hypo myelination and a drastic drop in brain aspartate (Asp) and N-acetylaspartate (NAA). Current evidence suggest that neurons are the main brain cell type expressing Aralar. How

Membrane Estrogen Receptor β Is Sufficient to Mitigate Cardiac Cell Pathology.

Estrogen acting through estrogen receptor β (ERβ) has been shown to oppose the stimulation of cardiac myocytes and cardiac fibroblasts that results in cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis. Previous work has implicated signal transduction from ERβ as being important to the function of estrogen in this regard. Here we address whether membrane ERβ is sufficient to oppose key mechanisms by which angiotensin II (AngII) stimulates cardiac cell pathology. To do this we first defined essential structural elements within ERβ that are necessary for membrane or nuclear localization in cells. We previously de…
