In-patient psychiatric-psychotherapeutic treatment of mothers with a generalized anxiety disorder--does the co-admission of their children influence the treatment results? A prospective, controlled study.

INTRODUCTION: Whether women who are admitted together with their children achieve inpatient psychotherapeutic treatment results that differ significantly from the results for women who are admitted alone, is a subject of controversy. We compared both groups in a prospective, randomized, controlled study. METHODS: The monitored results of 29 female patients diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder, 15 of whom were admitted with accompanying children and 14 without, were compared (response rate 95.3%). The period of observation amounted to six weeks. The System Checklist (SCL-90-R) and The Q

Social determinants of psychiatric morbidity and well-being in immigrant elders and whites in east London.

OBJECTIVES: The social conditions under which migrants to the UK live may be more significant than the experience of migration itself in leading to increased risk of mental illness. We aimed to compare the prevalence of mental, physical and social health problems in elderly Somalis, Bengalis and whites living in a deprived inner London area and examine associations between environmental circumstances, social support, physical health status, mood and life satisfaction in these groups. In addition, we wanted to test the hypothesis that differences in mental health between immigrants and whites a

Estimates of the prevalence of childhood maladjustment in a community survey in Puerto Rico. The use of combined measures.

A two-stage epidemiologic survey was carried out on a probability sample of the population aged 4 through 16 years in Puerto Rico. The survey used the Child Behavior Checklist as a screening instrument, and prevalence rates were estimated on the basis of clinical diagnoses and other measures provided by child psychiatrists during the second stage. Maladjustment was operationally defined through the use of combined measures, including DSM-III diagnosis and a scale of functional impairment. Data were provided on the demographic correlates of maladjustment and on the comorbidity of DSM-III diagno

The Family Resilience Inventory: A Culturally Grounded Measure of Current and Family-of-Origin Protective Processes in Native American Families.

The purpose of this article is to introduce the Family Resilience Inventory (FRI) and present findings on initial efforts to validate this measure. The FRI is designed to assess family resilience in one's current family and in one's family of origin, enabling the assessment of family protective factors across these generations. The development of the FRI was the result of many years of ethnographic research with Southeastern Native American tribes; yet, we believe that this scale is applicable to families of various backgrounds. Items for the FRI were derived directly from thematic analysis of

Mental vulnerability, Helicobacter pylori, and incidence of hospital-diagnosed peptic ulcer over 28 years in a population-based cohort.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether mental vulnerability, an enduring personality characteristic, predicts incident hospital-diagnosed ulcer over three decades. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A population-based cohort study enrolled 3365 subjects with no ulcer history, ages 30-60, in 1982-3. Mental vulnerability, Helicobacter pylori IgG antibodies, socioeconomic status, and sleep duration were determined at baseline; non-steroidal antiinflammatory drug use, smoking, leisure time physical activity, and alcohol consumption both at baseline and in 1993-4. Hospital diagnoses of incident ulcer through 2011 were

Caregiver burden in atypical dementias: comparing frontotemporal dementia, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Caregiver burden is a significant issue in the treatment of dementia and a known contributor to institutionalization of patients with dementia. Published data have documented increased caregiver burden in behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) compared to Alzheimer's disease (AD). Another atypical dementia with high-perceived caregiver burden is sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD), but no formal studies have assessed this perception. The aim of this study was to compare caregiver burden across atypical dementia etiologies. METHODS: 76 adults with atypical dementi

Self-verification and social anxiety: preference for negative social feedback and low social self-esteem.

BACKGROUND: A self-verification model of social anxiety views negative social self-esteem as a core feature of social anxiety. This core feature is proposed to be maintained through self-verification processes, such as by leading individuals with negative social self-esteem to prefer negative social feedback. This model is tested in two studies. METHODS: In Study 1, questionnaires were administered to a college sample (N = 317). In Study 2, questionnaires were administered to anxiety disordered patients (N = 62) before and after treatment. RESULTS: Study 1 developed measures of preference fo

What variables are associated with an expressed wish to kill a doctor in community and injured patient samples?

Working in a health care setting has been identified as a primary risk factor for violent assault, which is often perpetrated by patients. Patient dangerousness is a multidimensional phenomenon, which may include violent ideation, homicidal planning, a history of violent acts, or overt threatening behavior. Although the verbal report of thoughts of killing a doctor is only one of many risk factors for patient dangerousness, reports of homicidal ideation are widely regarded as being sufficient to warrant concern, and to indicate a need for further assessment of the patient. In this study, 2264

Coexistence of pain and depression predicts poor 2-year surgery outcome among lumbar spinal stenosis patients.

BACKGROUND: Lumbar spinal stenosis is a common cause of back and leg pain with the most severe cases treated surgically. Regarding the surgery outcome, the importance of early postoperative depression and pain is unknown. AIMS: To examine whether the coexistence of pain and depressive symptoms on 3-month follow-up predicts the 2-year surgery outcome. METHODS: 93 patients (mean age 62 years) with symptomatic lumbar spinal stenosis underwent decompressive surgery. They completed the same set of questionnaires, 3 months, 1 year and 2 years postoperatively. Depression was assessed with the 21-it

Anxiety, cognitive self-evaluation and performance: ERP correlates.

The relation between anxiety, cognitive self-evaluation, performance, and electrical brain activity (event-related potentials, ERPs) in a sustained attention task (Go/NoGo; SART) was investigated in 18 participants. No significant correlation was found between reaction times and anxiety (assessed by State and Trait Anxiety Inventory or STAI), and cognitive self-evaluation (assessed by Cognitive Failures Questionnaire or CFQ). N2 (ERP time-window 250-350ms) and P3 (350-650ms) amplitudes were found to be related to anxiety and cognitive self-evaluation. N2 amplitude increased in trait and state
