A novel approach to probabilistic biomarker-based classification using functional near-infrared spectroscopy.

Pattern recognition approaches to the analysis of neuroimaging data have brought new applications such as the classification of patients and healthy controls within reach. In our view, the reliance on expensive neuroimaging techniques which are not well tolerated by many patient groups and the inability of most current biomarker algorithms to accommodate information about prior class frequencies (such as a disorder's prevalence in the general population) are key factors limiting practical application. To overcome both limitations, we propose a probabilistic pattern recognition approach based o

GABAA agonist reduces visual awareness: a masking-EEG experiment.

Consciousness can be manipulated in many ways. Here, we seek to understand whether two such ways, visual masking and pharmacological intervention, share a common pathway in manipulating visual consciousness. We recorded EEG from human participants who performed a backward-masking task in which they had to detect a masked figure form its background (masking strength was varied across trials). In a within-subject design, participants received dextromethorphan (a N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor antagonist), lorazepam (LZP; a GABA(A) receptor agonist), scopolamine (a muscarine receptor antagonist),

A longitudinal functional connectivity analysis of the amygdala in bipolar I disorder across mood states.

OBJECTIVE: Bipolar I disorder is characterized by affective symptoms varying between depression and mania. The specific neurophysiology responsible for depression in bipolar I disorder is unknown but previous neuroimaging studies suggest impairments in corticolimbic regions that are responsible for regulating emotion. The amygdala seems to play a central role in this network and is responsible for appraisal of emotional stimuli. To further understand the role of the amygdala in the generation of mood symptoms, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine a group of patients

Emotional responses associated with self-face processing in individuals with autism spectrum disorders: an fMRI study.

Individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) show impaired emotional responses to self-face processing, but the underlying neural bases are unclear. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we investigated brain activity when 15 individuals with high-functioning ASD and 15 controls rated the photogenicity of self-face images and photographs of others' faces. Controls showed a strong correlation between photogenicity ratings and extent of embarrassment evoked by self-face images; this correlation was weaker among ASD individuals, indicating a decoupling between the cognitive evaluation

The neural correlates of performance in adolescents at risk for schizophrenia: inefficiently increased cortico-striatal responses measured with fMRI.

BACKGROUND: fMRI studies indicate that schizophrenia patients and their adult relatives require greater prefrontal activation to maintain performance at levels equal to controls, but studies have not established if this pattern of inefficiency is observed in child and adolescent offspring of schizophrenia patients (SCZ-Off). METHODS: Using a task with visual working memory demands, we investigated activation in cortico-striatal networks and dorsal prefrontal modulation of regions underlying visual working memory in a group of SCZ-Off (n = 19) and controls with no family history of psychosis (

Perceptual processing advantages for trauma-related visual cues in post-traumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Intrusive re-experiencing in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) comprises distressing sensory impressions from the trauma that seem to occur 'out of the blue'. A key question is how intrusions are triggered. One possibility is that PTSD is characterized by a processing advantage for stimuli that resemble those that accompanied the trauma, which would lead to increased detection of such cues in the environment. METHOD: We used a blurred picture identification task in a cross-sectional (n=99) and a prospective study (n=221) of trauma survivors. RESULTS: Participants with acute s

Light acts through melanopsin to alter retinal waves and segregation of retinogeniculate afferents.

Waves of correlated activity sweeping across the early postnatal mouse retina promote the segregation and refinement of retinofugal projections. This process has been thought to be spontaneous and unaffected by visual experience. We found, however, that light prolongs spiking during the waves and enhances the segregation of retinogeniculate afferents, and that it did so by activating melanopsin-expressing, intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells.

[Quantitative ocular-motor tests analysis in multiple sclerosis].

UNLABELLED: Abnormalities in the ocular-motor reflex recorded in electronystagmography may indicate central vestibular system impairment. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common chronic, debilitating disease characterized by focal demyelinization that develops throughout the central nerves system at varying time. The aim of the study was to apply the quantitative analysis of ocular-motor tests to evaluation degree of the central system impairment in MS patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was carried on 60 MS patients consulted in Balance Division, Otolaryngology Clinic, Medical Unive

Intraoperative monitoring of cortically recorded visual response for posterior visual pathway.

OBJECT: Intraoperative monitoring of visual evoked potentials (VEPs) has been regarded as having limited significance for the preservation of visual function during neurosurgical procedures, mainly due to its poor spatial resolution and signal-to-noise ratio. The authors evaluated the usefulness of cortically recorded VEPs, instead of the usual scalp VEPs, as intraoperative monitoring focusing on the posterior visual pathway. METHODS: In 17 consecutive patients who underwent microsurgical procedures for lesions near the posterior visual pathway, cortical responses were recorded using 1-Hz fla

The brain-derived neurotrophic factor Val66Met polymorphism affects memory formation and retrieval of biologically salient stimuli.

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is involved in memory and the pathophysiology of various neuropsychiatric disorders. A single nucleotide polymorphism in the human BDNF gene (Val66Met) affects memory, and influences Alzheimer's disease and depression vulnerability in a sex-specific manner. Recent animal studies suggest that BDNF mediates memory for emotional experiences in the amygdala, but it is currently unknown whether BDNF Val66Met influences memory processing in the amygdala. Here, we investigated its effect on the successful encoding and recognition of biologically salient stimul

Neural abnormalities in early-onset and adolescence-onset conduct disorder.

CONTEXT: Conduct disorder (CD) is characterized by severe antisocial behavior that emerges in childhood (early-onset CD [EO-CD]) or adolescence (adolescence-onset CD [AO-CD]). Early-onset CD is proposed to have a neurodevelopmental basis, whereas AO-CD is thought to emerge owing to social mimicry of deviant peers. However, this developmental taxonomic theory is debated after reports of neuropsychological impairments in both CD subtypes. A critical, although unaddressed, issue is whether these subtypes present similar or distinct neurophysiological profiles. Hence, we investigated neurophysiolo

Alterations in fear response and spatial memory in pre- and post-natal zinc supplemented rats: remediation by copper.

The role of zinc in the nervous system is receiving increased attention. At a time when dietary fortification and supplementation have increased the amount of zinc being consumed, little work has been done on the effects of enhanced zinc on behavior. Both zinc and copper are essential trace minerals that are acquired from the diet; under normal conditions the body protects against zinc overload, but at excessive dosages, copper deficiency has been seen. In order to examine the effect of enhanced metal administration on learning and memory, Sprague Dawley rats were given water supplemented with

Radial diffusivity in remote optic neuritis discriminates visual outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) quantifies Brownian motion of water within tissue. The goal of this study was to test whether, following a remote episode of optic neuritis (ON), breakdown of myelin and axons within the optic nerve could be detected by alterations in DTI parameters, and whether these alterations would correlate with visual loss. METHODS: Seventy subjects with a history of ON > or =6 months prior underwent DTI of the optic nerves, assessment of visual acuities (VA) and contrast sensitivities (CS), and laboratory measures of visual evoked potentials (VEP) and optical c

Investigation of the neural correlates underlying action observation in multiple sclerosis patients.

Recent fMRI evidence indicates that both the execution and the observation of hand actions in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients increase recruitment of a portion of the so-called mirror neuron system. However, it remains unclear whether this is the expression of a compensatory mechanism for the coding of observed action or whether such a mechanism represents a rather unspecific functional adaptation process. Here we used fMRI on early relapsing remitting MS (RRMS) patients to clarify this issue. Functional images of 15 right-handed early RRMS patients and of 15 sex- and age-matched right-handed

Real-time artifact filtering in continuous VEPs/fMRI recording.

Continuous recording of Visual Evoked Potentials (VEPs) and functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) exploits the VEPs high temporal resolution and the fMRI high spatial resolution. In this work, we present a new method of continuous VEPs/fMRI recording to study visual function in seven normal subjects. Our real-time artifact filtering is characterized by a procedure based on an analytical study of echo-planar imaging (EPI) sequence parameters related electro-encephalogram (EEG)-artifact shapes. The magnetic field artifacts were minimized by using a dedicated amagnetic device and by a subt

Separate processing of texture and form in the ventral stream: evidence from FMRI and visual agnosia.

Real-life visual object recognition requires the processing of more than just geometric (shape, size, and orientation) properties. Surface properties such as color and texture are equally important, particularly for providing information about the material properties of objects. Recent neuroimaging research suggests that geometric and surface properties are dealt with separately within the lateral occipital cortex (LOC) and the collateral sulcus (CoS), respectively. Here we compared objects that differed either in aspect ratio or in surface texture only, keeping all other visual properties con

Eye-head coordination in moderately affected Huntington's Disease patients: do head movements facilitate gaze shifts?

In addition to many other symptoms, Huntington's Disease (HD) also causes an impairment of oculomotor functions. In particular, saccadic eye movements become progressively slower and more difficult to initiate; ultimately, patients are forced to recur to large head thrusts as means to initiate gaze shifts. We wondered whether, as a precursor of this condition, head movements would facilitate gaze shifts already in early stages of the disease. We studied horizontal head movements and eye-head coordination in 29 early stage HD patients (Ps) and 24 age matched controls (Cs). Subjects tracked rand

Hemispheric asymmetries in the perceptual representations of words.

The representation of words in sentences can involve the activation and integration of perceptual information. For example, readers who are asked to view pictures of objects relating to a word in a sentence are influenced by perceptual information in the sentence context-readers are faster to respond to a picture of a whole apple after reading, "There is an apple in the bag," than after reading, "There is an apple in the salad." The purpose of this study was to examine how the two cerebral hemispheres use perceptual information about words as a function of sentence context. Patients who had da

Consolidation of object-discrimination memory is independent of the hippocampus in rats.

We examined whether retrograde amnesia would be more likely for object discriminations learned an hour before hippocampal damage than object discriminations learned days before. Specifically, rats were trained on two object-discrimination problems 72 h before surgery and another discrimination problem and the reversal of one of the previously learned problems 1 h before surgery. Importantly, novel procedures that minimized overtraining on the object discriminations were used to increase the possibility of the lesions causing amnesia. After either receiving sham or neurotoxic-induced hippocampa
