The time course of postflight simulator sickness symptoms.

Reports of posteffects following training sessions in Navy and Army flight simulators were obtained from pilots to determine the time course of recovery from simulator sickness. Results imply that posteffects may be a more serious problem than previously considered; 45% of all those queried (N greater than 700) reported having experienced symptoms of simulator sickness; 25% of the symptoms lasted more than 1 h after leaving the simulator; and 8% lasted more than 6 h. Postexposure symptoms were classified into three categories: visuomotor (based on disturbances in oculomotor control; e.g., eyes

Neurological complications of hemolytic-uremic syndrome.

Of 78 children identified with hemolytic-uremic syndrome at the Children's Hospital, Boston, from 1976 to 1986, 16 patients (20.5%) had neurological manifestations during their hospitalization. The most common manifestations were significant alterations in consciousness (coma, stupor) in 12 patients, and either generalized or partial seizures in ten patients. Others included hemiplegia (4 patients), decerebrate posturing (3), cortical blindness (2), hallucinations (1), and dystonic posturing (1). Cranial computed tomographic scans were abnormal in eight of 11 patients scanned. The abnormalitie

Rubral tremor: clinical features and treatment of three cases.

Rubral tremor is characterized by a slow coarse tremor at rest that is exacerbated by postural adjustments and by guided voluntary movements. Some authorities have questioned whether it should be regarded as a distinct clinical entity. We observed three cases of rubral tremor following stroke and studied the movements by videotape recordings. The tremors were very similar in the three cases, and all showed plastic rigidity and dystonic posturing of the affected limbs. Rehabilitation difficulties out of proportion to the motor deficit were present, but all three patients responded favourably to

Predictors of Return to Sports Following the Modified Broström Procedure for Chronic Ankle Instability.

Background/Objectives: Despite a substantial duration of recovery following the modified Broström procedure (MBP), many individuals do not entirely recover their preinjury sports performance. Return to sports (RTS) can be affected by multiple elements apart from a patient's motivation. This study aimed to investigate the factors influencing RTS after anatomical ligament repair for chronic ankle instability. Methods: Sixty-two patients aged under 35 who underwent the MBP were regularly monitored for up to 3 years. Of these, 51 patients (82.3%) returned to their preinjury level of sports activit

Weight Symmetry and Latency Scores for Unexpected Surface Perturbations in Subjects With Traumatic and Vascular Unilateral Transtibial Amputation.

BACKGROUND: Subjects with lower limb amputation develop new motor control strategies to preserve balance when they experience unexpected perturbations. Most studies performed thus far have not aimed to discuss the possible differences in postural control between subjects with vascular unilateral transtibial amputation (UTA) and subjects with traumatic UTA. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the automatic postural reaction in response to unexpected surface perturbations in a sample of subjects with traumatic and vascular UTA and to compare these observations with those for a group of healthy subjects. Changes in tactile acuity and their association with balance impairment in type 2 diabetes: A 2-year cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Impaired plantar tactile acuity and balance dysfunction are common in individuals with type 2 diabetes and contribute to increased fall risk. However, it remains unclear whether deterioration in tactile acuity precedes balance impairment over time. The objective of this study was to determine the temporal relationship between changes in plantar tactile acuity and balance outcomes in adults with type 2 diabetes. METHODS: This 24-month longitudinal cohort study followed 183 adults with type 2 diabetes assessed at baseline and 6-month intervals. Plantar tactile acuity, postural sway,

Hemodynamic Challenges of Lower Extremity Lymphovenous Anastomosis: A Critical Reappraisal.

Lymphovenous anastomosis (LVA) has become an established microsurgical treatment for lymphedema, yet the hemodynamic basis for its efficacy in the lower extremity has not been rigorously examined. Most assessments of anastomotic function are performed in the supine position, where lymphatic pressure exceeds venous pressure, creating a favorable gradient for drainage. However, adults spend 16-18 h daily in upright postures, during which ankle-level venous pressure rises to 80-100 mmHg while lymphatic pressure increases only modestly. This pressure reversal raises questions about whether lower e…

The neuromechanics of the soleus for fall prevention in aging.

Falls are a leading cause of injury-related hospitalization, morbidity, and mortality in older adults, with impaired postural control serving as a key predictor of fall risk. The triceps surae, and particularly the soleus, plays a central role in maintaining upright stance by generating continuous plantarflexion moments that stabilize the body's center of mass. This mini-review summarizes evidence for the neuromechanical contributions of the soleus to postural stability and how these functions decline with age. Mechanically, the soleus acts as a brace for balance, providing sustained torque th

Age-related attenuation of the fast visuomotor network during rapid goal-directed reaching.

Humans can react remarkably quickly to novel or displaced visual stimuli when time is of the essence. Such movements are thought to be initiated by a subcortical fast visuomotor network, but it is unclear how this network declines with age. Past work in the upper limb has detailed delayed reaching corrections to jumped visual stimuli in aging, but the underlying mechanisms contributing to these changes of the fast visuomotor network are poorly understood. Conversely, work in the lower limb has reported delayed muscle recruitment during obstacle avoidance, but such findings may be confounded by

Are there relationships between calf muscle lengths and static and dynamic balance control?

BACKGROUND: The calf muscles provide mechanical constraints and somatosensorial feedback to maintain and regulate standing posture. The lengthening of the calf muscles varies among individuals. However, research studies on the influence of calf muscle length on postural balance are limited in young adults. This study aims to correlate the soleus and gastrocnemius (calf) estimated muscle length with the Balance Error Scoring System (BESS) and the Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT). METHODS: The study included 47 healthy young adult participants without lower limb injuries. The ankle goniometry…
