PURPOSE: Noninvasive positive pressure ventilation (NIV) is a common intervention used to treat acute respiratory failure. Unfortunately, many patients find NIV intolerable, ultimately leading to NIV failure, and the need for escalation to intubation and invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV).
