Using Thermal Signature to Evaluate Heat Stress Levels in Laying Hens with a Machine-Learning-Based Classifier.

Infrared thermography has been investigated in recent studies to monitor body surface temperature and correlate it with animal welfare and performance factors. In this context, this study proposes the use of the thermal signature method as a feature extractor from the temperature matrix obtained from regions of the body surface of laying hens (face, eye, wattle, comb, leg, and foot) to enable the construction of a computational model for heat stress level classification. In an experiment conducted in climate-controlled chambers, 192 laying hens, 34 weeks old, from two different strains (Dekalb

Aromatase deficiency in transplanted bone marrow cells improves vertebral trabecular bone quantity, connectivity, and mineralization and decreases cortical porosity in murine bone marrow transplant recipients.

Estradiol is an important regulator of bone accumulation and maintenance. Circulating estrogens are primarily produced by the gonads. Aromatase, the enzyme responsible for the conversion of androgens to estrogen, is expressed by bone marrow cells (BMCs) of both hematopoietic and nonhematopoietic origin. While the significance of gonad-derived estradiol to bone health has been investigated, there is limited understanding regarding the relative contribution of BMC derived estrogens to bone metabolism. To elucidate the role of BMC derived estrogens in male bone, irradiated wild-type C57BL/6J mice

Palladium-anchored calix[4]arene-derived porous organic polymer towards efficient hydrolytic cleavage of carbon disulfide.

The release of carbon disulfide can have adverse effects on our environment and human health. The stability of carbon disulfide and the slow kinetics of hydrolysis can make it challenging to achieve efficient and practical cleavage of the CS bonds. Herein, a calix[4]arene-based porous organic polymer (CPOP-1) is innovatively synthesized through an optimized polycondensation reaction using C-Methylcalix[4]resorcinarene and hexafluoro-hexaazatriphenylene as monomers. Subsequently, palladium-induced calix[4]arene-based porous organic polymer was also synthesized via strong Pd-N coordination bonds

Design of TOLERANT: phase I/II safety assessment of intranodal administration of HSP70/mB29a self-peptide antigen-loaded autologous tolerogenic dendritic cells in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

INTRODUCTION: In rheumatoid arthritis (RA), immunosuppressive therapies may achieve symptomatic relief, but do not induce long-term, drug-free remission. Meanwhile, the lifelong use of immunosuppressive drugs confers increased risk for malignancy and infections. As such, there is an unmet need for novel treatments that selectively target the pathogenic immune response in RA by inducing tolerance to autoantigens. Autologous cell therapy using antigen-loaded tolerogenic dendritic cells (tolDCs) aims to reinstate autoantigen-specific immunological tolerance in RA and could potentially meet this n

Hepatic melanomacrophage centers in the arctic cultured fish Cyclopterus lumpus are not indicative of its health state.

The lumpfish, Cyclopterus lumpus, holds significant promise as a candidate for large-scale aquaculture production, particularly in its role as a cleaner fish used to manage sea lice infestations in Atlantic salmon Salmo salar farming. Melanomacrophage centers (MMCs) represent polymorphic structures present in the hemolymphopoietic organs of various vertebrates, serving as a widely applicable histological indicator of the fish immune and health status. This study aims to investigate the histochemical characteristics of MMCs within lumpfish livers and to compare MMC density between hatchery-prod

The current status of neglected tropical diseases in Japan: A scoping review.

Little attention has been paid to neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) in high-income countries and no literature provides an overview of NTDs in Japan. This scoping review aims to synthesize the latest evidence and information to understand epidemiology of and public health response to NTDs in Japan. Using three academic databases, we retrieved articles that mentioned NTDs in Japan, written in English or Japanese, and published between 2010 and 2020. Websites of key public health institutions and medical societies were also explored. From these sources of information, we extracted data that wer

Effect of Intraperitoneal 224Radium-Labelled Microparticles on Compartmentalized Inflammation After Cytoreductive Surgery and Hypertherm Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy.

Despite extensive treatment with surgery and chemotherapy many patients with peritoneal metastases from colorectal cancer experience intraperitoneal disease relapse. The α-emitting 224radium-labelled microparticle radionuclide therapeutic Radspherin® is being explored as a novel treatment option for these patients. Radspherin® is specially designed to give local radiation to the surface of the peritoneal cavity and potentially kill remaining attached micrometastases as well as free-floating cancer cells, thus preventing future relapse. The effect of Radspherin® on the immune system is not know

Contact with soil impacts ferrihydrite and lepidocrocite transformations during redox cycling in a paddy soil.

Iron (Fe) oxyhydroxides can be reductively dissolved or transformed under Fe reducing conditions, affecting mineral crystallinity and the sorption capacity for other elements. However, the pathways and rates at which these processes occur under natural soil conditions are still poorly understood. Here, we studied Fe oxyhydroxide transformations during reduction-oxidation cycles by incubating mesh bags containing ferrihydrite or lepidocrocite in paddy soil mesocosms for up to 12 weeks. To investigate the influence of close contact with the soil matrix, mesh bags were either filled with pure Fe

Comparison of three regimens with inhalational methoxyflurane versus intranasal fentanyl versus intravenous morphine in pre-hospital acute pain management: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial (PreMeFen).

BACKGROUND: Pre-hospital pain management has traditionally been performed with intravenous (IV) morphine, but oligoanalgesia remain a recognized problem. Pain reduction is essential for patient satisfaction and is regarded as a measure of successful treatment. We aim to establish whether non-invasive methods such as inhalation of methoxyflurane is non-inferior to intranasal fentanyl or non-inferior to the well-known IV morphine in the pre-hospital treatment of acute pain. METHOD/DESIGN: The PreMeFen study is a phase three, three-armed, randomized, controlled, non-inferiority trial to compare

Parthenolide promotes expansion of Nestin+ progenitor cells via Shh modulation and contributes to post-injury cerebellar replenishment.

Background: Regeneration of injuries occurring in the central nervous system is extremely difficult. Studies have shown that the developing cerebellum can be repopulated by a group of Nestin-expressing progenitors (NEPs) after irradiation injury, suggesting that modulating the mobilization of NEPs is beneficial to promoting nerve regeneration. To date, however, effect of exogenous pharmaceutical agonist on NEPs mobilization remains unknown. Parthenolide (PTL), a sesquiterpene lactone isolated from shoots of feverfew. Although it has been shown to possess several pharmacological activities and
