A priming dose of protons alters the early cardiac cellular and molecular response to (56)Fe irradiation.

PURPOSE: Recent evidence suggests that the heart may be injured by ionizing radiation at lower doses than was previously thought. This raises concerns about the cardiovascular risks from exposure to radiation during space travel. Since space travel is associated with exposure to both protons from solar particle events and heavy ions from galactic cosmic rays, we here examined the effects of a "priming" dose of protons on the cardiac cellular and molecular response to a "challenge" dose of (56)Fe in a mouse model. METHODS: Male C57BL/6 mice at 10 weeks of age were exposed to sham-irradiation,

Interaction of UV radiation and inorganic carbon supply in the inhibition of photosynthesis: spectral and temporal responses of two marine picoplankters.

The effect of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) on inhibition of photosynthesis was studied in two species of marine picoplankton with different carbon concentration mechanisms: Nannochloropsis gaditana Lubian possesses a bicarbonate uptake system and Nannochloris atomus Butcher a CO2 active transport system. Biological weighting functions (BWFs) for inhibition of photosynthesis by UVR and photosynthesis vs irradiance (PI) curves for photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) were estimated for both species grown with an enriched CO2 supply (high dissolved inorganic carbon [DIC]: 1% CO2 in air) and i

Regulation of Intestinal P-Glycoprotein by Gamma-Ray Irradiation: Impacts on Transporter Expression and Oxidative Stress.

P-glycoprotein (P-gp), a key efflux drug transporter which plays a pivotal role in the in vivo pharmacokinetics of medications, undergoes alterations in expression and function following radiation exposure that can impact drug metabolism and therapeutic efficacy. Current research has found that clinical doses of radiation can affect the expression of drug transporters, while the underlying mechanisms associated with single high-dose irradiation remain to be thoroughly elucidated. This study investigates the effects of gamma-ray irradiation on the expression and transport activity of P-glycopro…

Radiation-optimized wide-volume CT pelvimetry: Size-adjusted foetal dosimetry and combined radiologists scoring-based qualitative and quantitative assessment.

INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND: Computed tomography (CT) pelvimetry provides reproducible three-dimensional assessment of maternal pelvic dimensions but remains limited by concerns regarding foetal radiation exposure. This study evaluated whether wide-volume CT (VMCT) acquisition provided on an 80-detector-row system could substantially reduce radiation dose while preserving pelvimetric landmark visibility. A previously validated size-adjusted foetal head dose (SAFHD) model integrating maternal size-specific dose estimate (SSDE) and foetal head geometry was applied to provide individualized dosimetry…

Effects of solar radiation and feeding time on behavior, immune response and production of lactating ewes under high ambient temperature.

A 6-wk trial was performed with 40 late-lactation Comisana ewes, which were either exposed to or protected from solar radiation and fed either in the morning (EXPM, PROM) or afternoon (EXPA, PROA) during summer in a Mediterranean climate. Behavioral traits of ewes were recorded once per week from 0800 to 2000 h. Rectal temperature (RT) and respiration rate (RR) were measured twice weekly at 1430 h. The phytohemagglutinin (PHA) skin test was performed to induce nonspecific delayed-type hypersensitivity at d 10, 20, and 32 of the experiment. Jugular blood samples were taken from ewes at the begi

Flavonoid Glycosides in Brassica Species Respond to UV-B Depending on Exposure Time and Adaptation Time.

Recently, there have been efforts to use ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B) as a biotechnological tool in greenhouses. Leafy Brassica species are mainly considered for their ability to synthesize glucosinolates and are valued as baby salads. They also have a remarkable concentration of chemically diverse flavonoid glycosides. In this study, the effect of short-term UV-B radiation at the end of the production cycle was investigated without affecting plant growth. The aim was to verify which exposure and adaptation time was suitable and needs to be further investigated to use UV as a biotechnologica

Ultraviolet Radiation-Induced Production of Nitric Oxide:A multi-cell and multi-donor analysis.

Increasing evidence regarding positive effects of exposure to sunlight has led to suggestions that current advice may be overly weighted in favour of avoidance. UV-A has been reported to lower blood pressure, possibly through nitric oxide (NO) production in skin. Here, we set out to investigate effects of UV-A and solar-simulated radiation on the potential source of dermal NO, the effective doses and wavelengths, the responsiveness of different human skin cells, the magnitude of inter-individual differences and the potential influence of age. We utilised isogenic keratinocytes, microvascular e

Ultraviolet B Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) Are More Efficient and Effective in Producing Vitamin D3 in Human Skin Compared to Natural Sunlight.

Vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin is important for health. Those with fat malabsorption disorders malabsorb vitamin D and thus must rely on cutaneous production of vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 is generated secondary to exposure to ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation (whether from the sun or from an artificial source). Light emitting diodes (LEDs) have been developed to emit ultraviolet radiation. Little is known about the efficiency of UVB emitting LEDs tuned to different wavelengths for producing vitamin D3 in human skin. Ampoules containing 7-dehydrocholesterol were exposed to a LED that emitted a peak wa

Sunlight Effects on Immune System: Is There Something Else in addition to UV-Induced Immunosuppression?

Sunlight, composed of different types of radiation, including ultraviolet wavelengths, is an essential source of light and warmth for life on earth but has strong negative effects on human health, such as promoting the malignant transformation of skin cells and suppressing the ability of the human immune system to efficiently detect and attack malignant cells. UV-induced immunosuppression has been extensively studied since it was first described by Dr. Kripke and Dr. Fisher in the late 1970s. However, skin exposure to sunlight has not only this and other unfavorable effects, for example, mutag

Photochemoprevention by botanical antioxidants.

The trend towards an increase in incidence and higher prevalence of skin cancer makes identification of effective chemopreventive agents an urgent priority. Excessive exposure to solar ultraviolet (UV) B radiation has been implicated as its main cause. Since these trends are likely to continue in the foreseeable future, the adverse effect of UVB has become a major human health concern. Therefore, the development of novel strategies to reduce the occurrence of skin cancer has become a highly desirable goal. Because UV radiation is known to cause excessive generations of reactive oxygen species

Recent advances in the study of ionizing radiation damage and repair.

This workshop, organized under the auspices of the EC Concerted Action Programme on DNA Repair and Cancer, was held at the CRC Gray Laboratory, Northwood, Middlesex, UK, 23-25 October 1991. The 42 participants were drawn mainly from laboratories participating in the EC Concerted Action, with a few visitors from elsewhere. The discussions centred on the increasing convergence of classical radiobiology and biophysics with molecular biology and mammalian cell genetics to study mechanisms of DNA strand break accumulation and repair following exposure to ionizing radiation. There was a strong empha

[A simple test phantom in the form of a staircase for running control of the image in veterinary roentgenology].

Quality control in veterinary radiology seems to be neglected. For the correct estimation of the radiographic quality, there is no adequate phantom available. Although measurements have shown that the exposure to radiation is far under the admissible limits, the quantity of repeated examination has to be reduced. So it was necessary to create a phantom, which allows the objective judgement of the x-ray photograph taken immediately from the patient. The phantom shows the following characteristics: 1) It is small-sized, so that it can be represented on the radiograph together with the object, bu
