At the Cancer Control Agency of British Columbia, 483 patients with cancer of the esophagus and cardia were seen from 1970-1980. Four hundred and one out of 483 (83%) had tumors larger than 5 cm (T2) and in 288/483 (60%) the disease had extended beyond the esophageal wall (T3). We used quantitative in vitro autoradiography to localize and characterize 2-125I-melatonin binding sites in the rat suprachiasmatic nuclei in relation to pineal melatonin production. In a light:dark cycle of 12:12 h, binding density exhibited significant diurnal variation with a peak at the dark-light transition and a trough 12 hours later. Saturation studies suggested that the decreased binding at light-dark transition might be due to a shift of the putative melatonin receptor to a low affinity state.

From 1960 to 1983, 108 patients underwent an association cobaltherapy plus curietherapy boost for a base of tongue carcinoma. This group included 18 T1 tumors, 39 T2, and 51 T3. Cobaltherapy was delivered to a dose of 45 Gy/4.5 weeks to the primary site and the neck. It was completed by an electron boost or a nodal surgery in case of initial nodal disease. In the days after the nuclear reactor accident at Chernobyl (USSR) in April 1986, the Dutch Poison Control Center had to answer questions concerning possible health effects caused by (over)exposure to ionizing radiation. These questions were similar to questions asked regarding exposure to toxic agents after chemical accidents. It is obvious that the experience and practical approach of a Poison Control Center in handling toxicological problems can be used in problems concerning ionizing radiation.

Between March 1977 and December 1985, 59 patients were treated with intraperitoneal chromic phosphate at The University of Alabama Birmingham Hospitals and its affiliates. Twenty-seven patients received primary adjuvant therapy. Thirty-two patients were treated "secondarily" after tumor recurrence or after a "positive" second-look laparotomy. Associated morbidity was noted to be 12% with reoperation required in 7%. Early stage and grade tumors demonstrate a good prognosis. Little, if any, benefit was demonstrated in "secondary" therapy of advanced stage and grade tumors.

Human adenovirus type 2 (Ad 2) was irradiated with 137Cs gamma rays in the liquid state at 0 degree C. DNA breaks were correlated with the inactivation of several viral functions and compared to results obtained previously for irradiation of Ad 2 under frozen conditions at -75 degrees C. Irradiation at 0 degree C induced 170 +/- 20 single-strand breaks and 2.6 +/- 0.4 double-strand breaks/Gy/10(12) Da in the viral DNA. 123I-IMP-SPECT brain imaging was performed in patients with classic migraine (n = 5) and migraine accompagnée (n = 18) during the headache-free interval. A regional reduction of tracer uptake into brain was observed in all patients with migraine accompagnée, while in patients with classic migraine only one case showed an area of decreased activity. An I-131 metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) scan was performed in a patient with a familial history of multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) type 2 and recurrent medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). The scan revealed a mediastinal metastasis from her MTC and there was also an imaging pattern of bilateral adreno-medullary hyperplasia. Although the literature indicates that I-131-MIBG scanning is not sufficiently sensitive for the detection of MTC, this procedure has proven to be of value in the management of chosen patients with MEN-associated MTC.
