The application of RNFL thickness detection in early differential diagnosis among various types of idiopathic optic neuritis.

In this study, we attempted to investigate the application of RNFL thickness detection in the early differential diagnosis among various types of idiopathic optic neuritis (ION). In comparison with 19 healthy controls (HC), retrospective analysis of quadrant RNFL thickness in 83 patients with ION was performed, including eighteen multiple sclerosis (MS), forty-five neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), twenty patients with other idiopathic optic neuritis (O-ION). Our results showed that mean and every quadrant RNFL thickness of MS, NMOSD and O-ION were thinner than those of HC (P < 0

Color vision testing versus pattern visual evoked potentials and optical coherence tomography parameters in subclinical optic nerve involvement in multiple sclerosis.

Acute idiopathic demyelinating optic neuritis is frequently the initial manifestation of multiple sclerosis (MS). We aimed to discuss the value of color vision testing to detect possible optic nerve involvement in patients with MS who had no history of optic neuritis. We evaluated color vision with Farnsworth-Munsell 100 (FM-100) hue test. Total error scores (TES), partial error scores for the red-green axis (RGS) and blue-yellow axis (BYS) were calculated. Topographic optic disc parameters (RNFL, RA, DA, CV, RV, and vertical C/D ratio), total macular volume (TMV), central macular thickness (C

Environmental enrichment promotes fiber sprouting after deafferentation of the superior colliculus in the adult rat brain.

Exposure to an enriched environment has proven to be beneficial in the recovery of function after brain lesions, but the underlying mechanisms remain only partly understood. One possibility is that environmental enrichment stimulates the reorganization of areas and fiber tracts that have been spared by the injury. Here we evaluate the effects of enriched environment on the sprouting of undamaged retinal afferents into the deafferented superior colliculus (SC) after a partial retinal lesion in adult rats. Anterograde tracing of retinal axons demonstrated a significant increase in fiber sproutin
