We describe the early results of glenoplasty as part of the technique of operative reduction of posterior dislocation of the shoulder in 29 children with obstetric brachial plexus palsy. The mean age at operation was five years (1 to 18) and they were followed up for a mean of 34 months (12 to 67). The mean Mallet score increased from 8 (5 to 13) to 12 (8 to 15) at final follow-up (p < 0.001). The mean passive forward flexion was increased by 18° (p = 0.017) and the mean passive abduction by 24° (p = 0.001). The mean passive lateral rotation also increased by 54° (p < 0.001), but passive media

BACKGROUND: Displaced glenoid fractures require reduction and internal fixation to avoid chronic instability or degenerative changes. Arthroscopically assisted percutaneous fixation has been performed successfully for such fractures, avoiding extensive surgical dissection. To assess the application of this new technique, our cadaveric study was designed to show 1) the safe zones of percutaneous screw insertion and 2) the position of bony obstructions to the glenoid.
METHODS: In 18 cadaver shoulders, we performed arthroscopically assisted percutaneous wire insertion into the glenoid using ante

UNLABELLED: During the last decade, investigators of several studies have stressed the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of rotator cuff tears to improve outcome of surgical repair. Proximal migration of the humeral head is thought to be indicative for rotator cuff disorders. We wanted to assess the accuracy of proximal migration measurement on anteroposterior radiographs. Computed tomography scans and anteroposterior radiographs of 43 shoulders in 26 patients were taken using the same protocol. Proximal migration was measured as the acromiohumeral interval and the upward migration i

The prevalence of hemiplegic shoulder pain (HSP) and associated factors was studied in patients with a stroke followed for 6 months after discharge from hospital. A questionnaire was used to evaluate shoulder symptoms and an examination of the shoulder and arm was carried out three times over 6 months. A total of 108 patients were studied with a mean age of 71 years. Sixty-nine patients (63.8%) developed HSP at some time during the study period. The number with HSP was 39 at discharge from hospital, 59 at 8 weeks post-discharge and 36 at 6 months. Nine carers reported lifting the patient by pu

INTRODUCTION: Rotator cuff constitutes a mechanical arm and an important stabilizing factor for the shoulder joint, and the supraspinatus muscle is the initiator of the movement of arm in the abduction direction. Rotator cuff injuries constitute an important part of the shoulder pain, and many cases are managed conservatively, nevertheless, open or arthroscopic surgery remains a must in many cases.
CASE REPORT: We present the case of a patient in the sixth decade of life who complained of absence of abduction movement in his right shoulder three months ago after he lifted a heavy object. The

BACKGROUND: Preoperative planning software enables virtual implantation of reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) and assessment of impingement-free range of motion (ROM). Recent studies have shown that scapular resting position varies significantly among individuals and impacts impingement-free ROM. The resting position of the arm also varies between individuals, yet its impact on simulated outcomes and whether this parameter should be integrated into planning programs remains unclear. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of the resting arm position in the coronal plane on

Failure of primary shoulder stabilization procedures is often related to uncorrected anatomic pathology. Orthopaedic surgeons must recognize excessive capsular laxity or large glenohumeral bone defects preoperatively to avoid recurrence of instability. When history, physical examination, and radiographic evaluation are used in conjunction, patients at risk for failure can be identified. The instability severity index score permits precise identification of patients at risk. When treating patients in whom prior surgical intervention has failed, the success of revision procedures correlates to t

BACKGROUND: Shoulder disorders, particularly rotator cuff tears, are prevalent musculoskeletal conditions related to aging. Although the widely used suture anchor technique provides strong mechanical support to the tendon, it is associated with a risk of postoperative tendon retearing. The conventionally used titanium alloys can affect the interpretation of magnetic resonance imaging. Degradable magnesium alloys possess excellent biocompatibility, similar mechanical property to the bone, and stimulating bone formation ability from Mg2+. The purpose of this experiment was to develop innovative

Shoulder stiffness after rotator cuff repair is relatively common. In the past, this was thought to be a difficult complication, and many suggested manipulation under anesthesia or arthroscopic capsular release early in the postoperative course if a patient developed stiffness after rotator cuff repair. However, recent research shows such stiffness is actually a good thing. If a patient develops stiffness after rotator cuff repair, they have a better chance of healing their repair. Eventually, most of the stiffness resolves, and it may be that shoulder stiffness after rotator cuff repair is pa

BACKGROUND: The management of irreparable rotator cuff tears remains a topic of considerable debate among orthopedic surgeons. Currently, there is little consensus regarding the gold-standard treatment; however, an emerging option involves the use of a biodegradable subacromial spacer. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to systematically review and synthesize the current literature reporting on the clinical outcomes following implantation of a subacromial balloon spacer (SABS) for the treatment of patients with irreparable rotator cuff tears.
METHODS: A systematic review of the PubMed
