Each stage of life is characterized by the prevalence of certain affections; among others, inflammatory diseases of the ear, nose and throat are frequent in old age. Therefore, specific problems of chemotherapy in old age are dealt with in general terms in the introduction, with special stress being placed on the functions of individual organs, mainly of the kidneys, and on questions of disturbed absorption. Inflammations caused by streptococci, requiring at least ten days of antibiotic treatment, always deserve particular attention, and so do staphyloccocal diseases, requiring the selective a

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus epidermidis, a commensal skin pathogen, is a key pathogen in surgical site infections (SSIs). This study characterized clinical isolates obtained from an abdominal operation to guide decolonization therapy.
METHODS: In total, 146 S. epidermidis isolates obtained from pre-operative skin swabs of patients undergoing gynecological procedures were analyzed. PCR was performed to detect mecA, efflux pump genes (qacA/B, smr, etc.), and biofilm-associated genes (icaA-D, aap). Methicillin-resistant S. epidermidis (MRSE) isolates were typed by multi-locus sequence typing. Bro

This study reviews Staphylococcus aureus, a significant pathogen in both hospital and community-acquired infections, addressing its epidemiology, pathogenesis, and antimicrobial resistance. It highlights virulence mechanisms, such as adhesion factors, toxins, enzymes, and biofilms, which contribute to survival and immune evasion. The spread of resistance occurs through the transfer of mobile genetic elements like SCCmec and genetic mutations. The analysis also compares hospital and community strains, including multidrug-resistant lineages like MRSA, VISA, and VRSA. The study concludes that S.

Blood coagulation is essential for stopping bleeding but also drives thromboembolic disorders. Factor XII (FXII)-triggered coagulation promotes thrombosis while being dispensable for hemostasis, making it a potential anticoagulant target. However, its physiological role remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate that FXII-driven coagulation enhances innate immunity by trapping pathogens and restricting bacterial infection in mice. Streptococcus pneumoniae infection was more severe in FXII-deficient (F12-/-) mice, with increased pulmonary bacterial burden, systemic spread, and mortality. Similarly,

Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a complication that occurs in less than 1% of patients after unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA). Though infrequent, it may potentially lead to revision while placing a significant financial burden on the healthcare system. Preoperative, intra-operative, and postoperative strategies should be implemented to minimize the risk of PJI. Patient optimization prior to surgery can help to identify patients at risk for PJI and also maximize the health of the patient prior to surgery. Intraoperative and postoperative strategies can also mitigate the risk of

BACKGROUND: Bacterial densities likely fluctuate during infection and may exceed the bacterial density used in susceptibility testing. As such, investigation of bacterial killing by antibiotics over a range of varying bacterial densities may provide important differences between compounds and could impact drug selection for therapy.
HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: To measure killing of clinical isolates of Staphylococcus pseudintermedius and Escherichia coli by cefazolin, cefovecin, doxycycline and pradofloxacin at clinically relevant (minimum inhibitory, mutant prevention, maximum serum and maximum t

OBJECTIVE: Medical procedures and patient care activities may facilitate environmental dissemination of healthcare-associated pathogens such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
DESIGN: Observational cohort study of MRSA-colonized patients to determine the frequency of and risk factors for environmental shedding of MRSA during procedures and care activities in carriers with positive nares and/or wound cultures. Bivariate analyses were performed to identify factors associated with environmental shedding.
SETTING: A Veterans Affairs hospital.
PARTICIPANTS: This study include

A traumatic wound colonised with MRSA failed to respond to topical antimicrobial dressings. Following the combined use of octenilin Wound Gel and octenilin Wound Irrigation Solution, the MRSA was removed in 4 weeks, the necrotic tissue was debrided and the wound started healing.

Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita, renal dysfunction, and cholestasis (ARC) syndrome is a rare, fatal, multisystem disorder. Bleeding problems, which occur spontaneously and post organ biopsies, have been reported in these patients. We report the case of an infant who had life-threatening spontaneous nasal bleeding. A detailed assessment of her platelet function and morphology is presented.

We present a case of an elderly non-smoking gentleman who, since 2005, had been admitted multiple times for recurrent episodes of shortness of breath, wheeze, cough and sputum. The patient was treated as exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and/or lower respiratory tract infections. Bronchoscopy was done which revealed multiple hard nodules in the trachea and bronchi with posterior tracheal wall sparing. Biopsies confirmed this as tracheopathia osteochondroplastica (TO). He had increasing frequency of admission due to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and pse

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Since the introduction of vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) in 1997, it has been used successfully in treating difficult wounds, including spinal wounds and wounds in pediatric patients. There are no reports on VAC therapy in pediatric patients on the scalp, especially with exposed dura. This report describes a 10-year-old boy with a chronic wound of the scalp with exposed dura after multiple neurosurgical interventions who was treated successfully with VAC.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 10-year-old mentally disabled boy with Apert syndrome suffered from a chronic wound with

BACKGROUND: The rising prevalence of nosocomial methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and the recent emergence of community-associated MRSA are major clinical, public health, and economic challenges. MRSA is a leading cause of nosocomial pneumonia and complicated skin and soft-tissue infections (cSSTI). Vancomycin and linezolid are two commonly used antimicrobial agents with activity against Gram-positive pathogens, particularly MRSA, that are used to treat both nosocomial pneumonia and cSSTI. Recently, the therapeutic efficacy of vancomycin in the treatment of hospitalized patien

BACKGROUND: Microbial keratitis is a rare disease but most commonly caused by bacterial infection. Two of the most common bacteria to cause microbial keratitis are Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. Antibiotic therapy to treat keratitis caused by these bacteria is either monotherapy with a fluoroquinolone or combination therapy with fortified gentamicin.
METHODS: Literature searches were made in Medline and Pubmed using the search terms [Pseudomonas] or [Staphylococcus] and [fluoroquinolone] or [cephalosporin] or [gentamicin] and [keratitis] or [cornea]. Rates of resistance to

Knowledge of ecological niches of nosocomial pathogens is used in treatment and prevention of nosocomial infections. This article offers an analysis of the ecological niches of three important nosocomial pathogens: Clostridium difficile, Staphylococcus aureus and Legionella pneumophila. Relevant terms are explained and examples of deliberate and non-deliberate manipulation of the niches and the following consequences are given. Finally, the consequences of climate changes on the pattern of nosocomial infections are discussed.

The prevention and control of healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs) requires a tripartite partnership between clinicians and carers, managers and government/Department of Health (DoH) across the whole health and social care community. Mandatory surveillance of meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia and Clostridium difficile infection has shown a significant fall from peak numbers in 2003/04 and 2006, respectively, and there is now a zero tolerance approach to preventable infections and poor practice. Success so far has been based on senior management commitment, enhanced rea
