METHODS: In a prospective study of consecutive infants born at less than 37 weeks gestational age undergoing screening for retinopathy of prematurity, serial measurements of tear osmolarity were obtained at preterm, term, and 3 months post-term. Four patients with prenatal sonographic findings suggestive of ophthalmic pathology were detected in utero. The definitive diagnoses of infantile fibrosarcoma, persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous/persistent fetal vasculature, Fraser syndrome, and microphthalmia with coloboma and retrobulbar cyst were made postnatally.
