Association of educational attainment with mental disorders and the mediation role of lifestyle factors: a Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: Educational attainment (EA) was associated with lifestyle behaviors and underlying mental disorders. However, the causality remained poorly understood. This study aimed to elucidate the causal association between EA and mental disorders while exploring the mediation role of lifestyle factors. METHODS: A two-step Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was performed to evaluate the mediation role of lifestyle factors in the relationship between EA and mental disorders. The total effects of years of education (EduYears) and college completion (College) on 31 lifestyle factors and 7 me

Association of age and gender with anxiety disorders in older adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: To provide an estimate of 12-month and lifetime prevalence of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition (DSM-IV) anxiety disorders in older adults based on published studies on this topic and to identify the impact of gender and age. METHODS/DESIGN: A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed. Six databases were searched, and manual searches through reference lists of selected articles and reviews were performed. When the information was available, summary effects were calculated for the prevalence of each anxiety disorder and for every age and gen

Does CBT for anxiety-related disorders alter suicidal ideation? Findings from a naturalistic sample.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders commonly co-occur with suicidal ideation (SI). To our knowledge, no studies have reported on the baseline prevalence of SI and the reduction in SI in a naturalistic sample receiving cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for anxiety-related disorders. METHODS: Participants (n = 355) recruited from an anxiety specialty clinic reported SI at pre-, mid-, and post-CBT. Multilevel mixed effects logistic regression models compared differences in SI endorsement over Time. RESULTS: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and social anxiety disorder (SAD) were associated with sig

[Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) for anxiety disorders--a possible therapeutic option?].

Anxiety disorders rank among the most frequent psychiatric disorders. Effective psychotherapeutic and psychopharmacological interventions exist, although a considerable number of patients does not respond to standard interventions. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is capable of modulating cortical activity locally and non-invasively. Therefore, rTMS is discussed as a possible alternative treatment approach in psychiatric disorders. The present paper aims to provide a systematic review of randomised controlled studies, open studies, and case reports examining the potential th

Trauma exposure influences cue elicited affective responses among smokers with and without a history of major depression.

The current study tested the emotional reactivity of smokers with and without histories of major depression (MDD Hx) and trauma exposure (TE). Four counterbalanced conditions nested negative (e.g., dysphoric) or neutral mood inductions with in vivo versus control smoking paraphernalia cues (Neutral+Control; Neutral+Cigarette; Neg+Control; Neg+Cigarette). Mixed model analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) tested between and within subjects differences in negative affective symptoms pre- to post-exposure across four groups (TE+MDD Hx; TE only; MDD Hx only; no history). Results produced two notable effe

Evaluation of posttraumatic psychological problems in cancer patients.

The introduction of the diagnosis 'posttraumatic stress disorder' (PTSD) in cancer patients in the diagnostic nomenclature and the application of assessment to investigate prevalence, risk factors and comorbidity are discussed. The diagnosis PTSD in cancer patients makes it necessary to modify the trauma criteria. Data to identify patients at risk for developing PTSD in the group of cancer patients are incomplete. Prospective, longitudinal studies are needed to define the characteristics and course of PTSD in the cancer setting. With these data it would be possible to identify the population a

Psychogenic voice disorders and traumatic stress experience: a discussion paper with two case reports.

Psychogenic dysphonia refers to loss of voice where there is insufficient structural or neurological pathology to account for the nature and severity of the dysphonia, and where loss of volitional control over phonation seems to be related to psychological processes such as anxiety, depression, conversion reaction, or personality disorder. Such dysphonias may often develop post-viral infection with laryngitis, and generally in close proximity to emotionally or psychologically taxing experiences, where "conflict over speaking out" is an issue. In more rare instances, severe and persistent psych

The effect of uncertainties created by the February 6 earthquakes on post-traumatic stress: Reducing stress through coping strategies.

Two consecutive devastating earthquakes occurred in Turkey on February 6. While some studies have examined the long-term traumatic effects of devastating earthquakes on victims, no study to date has examined the consequences on adults who have migrated from the earthquake area. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the traumatic consequences of the earthquake among migrants in relation to sociodemographic factors. Additionally, the mediating effects of earthquake stress coping strategies on the links between intolerance of uncertainty (IU) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms

The Role of HPA Axis and Allopregnanolone on the Neurobiology of Major Depressive Disorders and PTSD.

Under stressful conditions, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis acts to promote transitory physiological adaptations that are often resolved after the stressful stimulus is no longer present. In addition to corticosteroids (e.g., cortisol), the neurosteroid allopregnanolone (3α,5α-tetrahydroprogesterone, 3α-hydroxy-5α-pregnan-20-one) participates in negative feedback mechanisms that restore homeostasis. Chronic, repeated exposure to stress impairs the responsivity of the HPA axis and dampens allopregnanolone levels, participating in the etiopathology of psychiatric disorders, such as

The role of mood, post-traumatic stress, post-concussive symptoms and coping on outcome after MTBI in elderly patients.

Elderly patients are at increased risk for persistent complaints after mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI). This study aimed to investigate the role of post-concussive symptoms, mood, post-traumatic stress, and coping on functional outcome in elderly with MTBI. Information on mood, post-concussive symptoms, post-traumatic stress, and coping was collected 2 weeks post-injury. Six months post-injury functional outcome was assessed with the Glasgow Outcome Scale Extended. One hundred and sixty-two patients aged ≥ 60 years were included, 55% male, mean age = 71 (±6.2) years. The most frequent cause

The role of natural disaster in individual and relational adjustment in Sri Lankan mothers following the 2004 tsunami.

The purpose of this study is to examine the associations between maternal mental health distress symptoms, including depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, the extent to which the presence of a child's disaster-related physical health problem(s) have interfered with daily functioning, and family cohesion over time among Sri Lankan mothers who survived the tsunami on 26 December 2004. Study variables were measured using a self-report questionnaire administered approximately four months after the event and three years later in summer 2008. Univariate, bivariate, and multivariate analyses

Mental health consequences of the Chernobyl disaster.

The psychosocial consequences of disasters have been studied for more than 100 years. The most common mental health consequences are depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, medically unexplained somatic symptoms, and stigma. The excess morbidity rate of psychiatric disorders in the first year after a disaster is in the order of 20%. Disasters involving radiation are particularly pernicious because the exposure is invisible and universally dreaded, and can pose a long-term threat to health. After the Chernobyl disaster, studies of clean-up workers (liquidators) and adults from cont

Mental health and substance use among bisexual youth and non-youth in Ontario, Canada.

Research has shown that bisexuals have poorer health outcomes than heterosexuals, gays, or lesbians, particularly with regard to mental health and substance use. However, research on bisexuals is often hampered by issues in defining bisexuality, small sample sizes, and by the failure to address age differences between bisexuals and other groups or age gradients in mental health. The Risk & Resilience Survey of Bisexual Mental Health collected data on 405 bisexuals from Ontario, Canada, using respondent-driven sampling, a network-based sampling method for hidden populations. The weighted preval

[Classification of mental disorders of soldiers participating in peace missions and warfare actions].

Numerous media reports (press, radio, television) and several scientific publications on psychiatric disorders among Polish soldiers participating in peace missions in Iraq indicate that there is a serious threat caused by the disorders defined in the DSM-IV classification as: acute stress disorder (ASD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The authors analyzed psychiatric documentation and conducted their own researches, which revealed that adjustment disorders, especially with anxiety, are the main psychiatric problem among Polish soldiers in Iraq, while incidence of ASD and PTSD is ve

On the early history of male hysteria and psychic trauma. Charcot's influence on Freudian thought.

This paper discusses the influence of Jean-Martin Charcot's views on Sigmund Freud's early theory of hysteria and the notion of psychical trauma. We consider the early history of both psychical trauma and male hysteria, for in Charcot's view traumatic hysteria and male hysteria are identical. Freud's two 1886 lectures on male hysteria, delivered after his return from Paris, are crucial to the subject because they present Freud's first impressions of Charcot and his teaching. Some of the ideas presented in the two lectures foreshadow Freud's later generalization of the etiological role of traum

Randomized Placebo-Controlled Trial of Methylphenidate or Galantamine for Persistent Emotional and Cognitive Symptoms Associated with PTSD and/or Traumatic Brain Injury.

We report findings from a 12-week randomized double-blinded placebo-controlled trial of methylphenidate or galantamine to treat emotional and cognitive complaints in individuals (n=32) with a history of PTSD, TBI, or both conditions. In this small pilot study, methylphenidate treatment was associated with clinically meaningful and statistically significant improvement compared with placebo on the primary outcome, a measure of cognitive complaints (Ruff Neurobehavioral Inventory-Postmorbid Cognitive Scale), as well as on the secondary outcomes reflecting post-concussive (Rivermead Post Concussi
