Primary closure versus non-closure of dog bite wounds. a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Dog bite wounds represent a major health problem. Despite their importance, their management and especially the role of primary closure remain controversial. In this randomised controlled trial, the outcome between primary suturing and non-closure was compared. METHODS: 168 consecutive patients with dog bite injuries were included in this study. The wounds were allocated randomly in two treatment approaches: Group 1, consisting of eighty-two patients, had their wound sutured, whilst Group 2, consisting of eighty-six patients, did not have their wounds sutured. All wounds were cl

Learning Surgical Fundamentals in the Digital Age, a YouTube Review.

INTRODUCTION: YouTube has become a widely used resource for medical students and trainees seeking instruction in surgical skills, including suturing techniques. While accessible, YouTube lacks formal peer review, raising concerns about the quality and reliability of its educational content. This study analyzes the landscape of YouTube suturing videos, with a focus on content quality, instructor background, and engagement patterns. OBJECTIVE: To characterize YouTube's suturing instruction videos by evaluating the background of instructors, suture techniques demonstrated, and viewer engagement,

Biomechanical Comparison of Distal Radioulnar Joint Reconstruction Graft Preparation Techniques.

Background  Graft preparation techniques for the Adams-Berger distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) reconstruction vary among surgeons with insufficient evidence to support any specific technique. Questions/Purposes  We compared survival with cyclic loading, absolute elongation, elongation rate, and modes of failure of four graft preparation techniques. Methods  Fifteen porcine extensor tendons were divided into three equal groups: tendon only; tendon augmented along its full length with nonlocking 2-0 FiberLoop suture spaced at 6 mm intervals; and tendon with suture at 12 mm intervals. Suture only w

Heel Complications.

Postoperative complications can be burdensome on both the patient and the surgeon. Attention in literature is often directed toward different forms of treatment and successful outcomes in surgery. The incentive of this article is to bring insight toward postoperative complications in rearfoot surgery, more specifically, the repair of the Achilles tendon with suture tape and suture anchors. This article directs attention to the recent reports on hypersensitivity reactions seen with the use of suture tape and nonabsorbable suture anchors and may encourage physicians to make patients aware of thi

Anatomical observations on os inca and associated cranial deformities.

The present study describes the presence of os inca, incomplete metopic suture with asymmetrical frontal sinuses and multiple sutural deformities in a skull bone. Os inca has been reported to be associated with other cranial deformities. However, the present study, besides reporting os inca and associated sutural abnormalities, also highlights the presence of an unusual pterion in such cases. The aim is to provide anatomical insight into the morphology of sutures, frontal sinuses and associated cranial abnormalities. These are important findings which may be relevant for surgeons and radiologi…

Mattress double anchor footprint repair: a novel, arthroscopic rotator cuff repair technique.

In an effort to increase the immediate strength of a rotator cuff repair and to simulate the standard open reconstruction with its effective suture fixation, we have developed a novel technique for suture anchor reconstruction of the rotator cuff. The technique, termed mattress double anchor (MDA), is simple and adaptable. It makes use of 2 suture anchors that are placed independently and then connected by a suture loop. The technique produces a repair construct that distributes the stress across 2 anchors. The method also restores a large surface area for healing between the rotator cuff and

[Reconstruction of the pubovesicocervical fascia following surgical failures of the anterior vaginal wall].

Results of reconstruction of fascia pubo-vesico-cervicalis in 21 women are presented after operative failure on the anterior vaginal dropped wall. The former operation consisted of anterior incision, separation of the walls to the sides, vesical intussusception with purse-string suture or transverse suture and of application mattress sutures on paraurethral tissue. At present the reconstruction of selected fascia pubo-vesico-cervicalis based on the doubling like a waistcoat and suturing under the symphysis pubis. Such a management causes a correctly fibrous and connective tissue support for ur…

Management of injuries of the large intestine.

Blunt trauma accounted for 1/3 of the 32 patients operated upon for injuries of the large intestine and penetrating wounds for 2/3. Most of the blunt injuries (9/10) were caused by traffic accidents, and more than half of the penetrating ones (12/22) were stab wounds. The transverse colon was most commonly affected, followed by the ascending, descending and sigmoid colon, rectum and mesentery. Perforation of the small intestine was the most frequent associated intra-abdominal injury, occurring in 11 patients (34%). Most patients (22/32) underwent simple suture, 6 patients suture with proximal

Biomechanical Comparison of Subpectoral Biceps Tenodesis Onlay Techniques.

BACKGROUND: Subpectoral biceps tenodesis can be performed with cortical fixation using different repair techniques. The goal of this technique is to obtain a strong and stable reduction of biceps tendon in an anatomic position. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to compare (1) displacement during cyclic loading, (2) ultimate load, (3) construct stiffness, and (4) failure mode of the biceps tenodesis fixation methods using onlay techniques with an all-suture anchor versus an intramedullary unicortical button. It was hypothesized that fixation with all-suture anchors using a Krac

Use of high-power lasers in pediatric dental surgeries: case reports.

The use of high-power diode laser technology follows the principles of minimally invasive dentistry. Laser technology is used frequently in pediatric dentistry, especially in surgical procedures, because this approach favors hemostasis, eliminates the use of sutures, improves healing, minimizes treatment time, reduces the sensation of pressure and vibration experienced by the patient, and creates more comfortable postoperative conditions. This article describes the use of high-power diode lasers to perform 3 minor oral surgical procedures--biopsy, lingual frenectomy, and operculectomy--in 2 ch…

Crouzon's Syndrome: A Rare Genetic Disorder.

UNLABELLED: Crouzon's syndrome, also known as brachial arch syndrome, is an autosomal dominant disorder with complete penetrance and variable expressivity. Described by a French neurosurgeon in 1912, it is a rare genetic disorder. Crouzon's syndrome is caused by mutation in the fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 (FGFR2) gene. Normally, the sutures in the human skull fuse after the complete growth of the brain, but if any of these sutures close early, then it may interfere with the growth of the brain. The disease is characterized by craniosynostosis, with associated dentofacial anomalies. Thi…

Endoscopically assisted correction of sagittal craniosynostosis.

Craniosynostosis is premature fusion of one or more of the cranial sutures of an infant's skull. Several sutures may be fused, alone or in combination. The endoscopically assisted approach to correcting craniosynostosis is an alternative to more traditional techniques, such as open-strip craniectomy and the Pi procedure for infants younger than four months of age and the cranial vault remodeling procedure for older children. The endoscopic procedure is less invasive and decreases the time patients spend under anesthesia, the need for transfusions, and lengths of hospital stay. The endoscopic a…
