The Prevalence and Determinants of Undernutrition Among Infants and Children Aged 6 Months to 5 Years in Sub-Saharan African Countries: A Systematic Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the prevalence and determinants of undernutrition among infants and children aged 6 months to 5 years in sub-Saharan African countries. BACKGROUND: Despite substantial progress over the past 20 years, undernutrition has remained an alarming global challenge. Sub-Saharan Africa is the only region where the prevalence of stunting in children younger than 5 years has significantly increased. This study seeks to update the evidence on the prevalence and determinants of childhood undernutrition in this vulnerable region. METHODS: This systematic scoping review was conducted

Dual chromatographic analysis of pesticide residues in eggplants: a green approach to food safety monitoring.

The determination of pesticide residues is crucial for safeguarding human health, ensuring food safety, and contributing to environmental sustainability. Chlorfenapyr (CLF), abamectin (ABM), and fenpyroximate (FNP) are widely employed in eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) cultivation for pest control. This study presents the first reported simultaneous analysis of these pesticides using two validated chromatographic methods: high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HP-TLC, Method A) and reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC, Method B). Method A employed a mobile phase

Effect of Praziquantel Treatment on the Nutritional Status of Children Infected with Schistosoma haematobium.

This quasi-experimental trial examined the relationship between Schistosoma haematobium infection and nutritional status, and the impact of single dose praziquantel (PZQ) therapy on undernutrition. A total of 353 children were examined, 112 of which were infected with S. haematobium and treated with PZQ. Children's heights, weights, and mid-upper arm circumferences (MUAC) were measured at baseline and one month post-treatment. Infected children had significantly smaller mean BMI-for-age z-scores (BAZ) (-1.16 vs. 0.11, p < 0.01) and weight-for-age z-scores (WAZ) (-0.61 vs. -0.31, p = 0.03) than

Weight Gain in Family-Based Treatment for Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) with and Without Autism.

Health-threatening underweight and poor growth is a frequent consequence of Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) and should be a priority for treatment in children and adolescents (young people, YP). Coexisting autism is more prevalent in YP with ARFID than in YP with other eating disorders. Treatment studies are still sparse for ARFID, and it is not known whether treatment response is lower in those with coexisting autism, as it is documented in other eating disorders. In this study we examined if family-based treatment for ARFID (FBT-ARFID) was associated with weight gain in und

Determinants of underweight among HIV-Infected children in pastoral communities of Southern Ethiopia: a facility-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The effect of HIV infection on the nutritional status of patients has been widely known for several years, as well as the synergy between the infection and the conditions of poverty in developing countries. However, particular communities like pastoralists in underdeveloped countries live in a unique crossroad where challenges related to HIV prevention and control, and vulnerability to the disease exacerbate each other. Thus information from such range of contexts is valuable in addressing the complicated medical condition resulting from the combination of HIV infection and malnutr

The relationship between intimate partner violence and child malnutrition: a retrospective study in 29 sub-Saharan African countries.

INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) and child malnutrition are global public health issues. Assessing the association between IPV and child anthropometric failures (stunting, underweight, and wasting) in 29 Sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries can provide significant global health solutions. Some studies have found an association between IPV against women and child malnutrition, but the conclusions are inconsistent. The physical and psychological conditions, living environment, and rights of the mother may be involved. METHODS: We collected and analyzed the Demographic

Evaluation and implementation of optimized antimicrobial dosing strategies in obese and underweight patients.

PURPOSE: We aimed to develop and implement dosing recommendations for antimicrobials in obese and underweight patients within an academic hospital, and assess their impact on antibiotic prescribing. METHODS: A multi-step approach project was performed. First, obese and underweight patient prevalence and antimicrobial prescription frequency was determined in a point prevalence study. Second and third, a literature review and e-survey provided dosing evidence. Fourth, a consensus meeting was organized to formulate dosing recommendations. Fifth, these were implemented in our clinical validation

Update on antithrombotic therapy and body mass: a clinical consensus statement of the European Society of Cardiology Working Group on Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy and the European Society of Cardiology Working Group on Thrombosis.

Obesity and underweight are a growing health problem worldwide and a challenge for clinicians concerning antithrombotic therapy, due to the associated risks of thrombosis and/or bleeding. This clinical consensus statement updates a previous one published in 2018, by reviewing the most recent evidence on antithrombotic drugs based on body size categories according to the World Health Organization classification. The document focuses mostly on individuals at the extremes of body weight, i.e. underweight and moderate-to-morbid obesity, who require antithrombotic drugs, according to current guidel

Undernutrition in young children with congenital heart disease undergoing cardiac surgery in a low-income environment.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition (undernutrition) in children with congenital disease (CHD) is a notable concern, with preoperative and persistent growth failure post-cardiac surgery contributing to poorer outcomes. Poor growth in children with CHD in low-income environments is exacerbated by feeding difficulties, poverty, delayed diagnosis, and late corrective surgery. This study describes and compares the growth of young children with CHD undergoing cardiac surgery in central South Africa from before to 6-months after cardiac surgery. METHODS: Children 30 months and younger, with their mothers, wer

The Population-Attributable Fractions of Small-for-Gestational-Age Births: Results from the Japan Birth Cohort Consortium.

A fetal growth restriction is related to adverse child outcomes. We investigated risk ratios and population-attributable fractions (PAF) of small-for-gestational-age (SGA) infants in the Japanese population. Among 28,838 infants from five ongoing prospective birth cohort studies under the Japan Birth Cohort Consortium, two-stage individual-participant data meta-analyses were conducted to calculate risk ratios and PAFs for SGA in advanced maternal age, pre-pregnancy underweight, and smoking and alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Risk ratio was calculated using modified Poisson analyses with

Prevalence and predictors of radiological left common iliac vein compression in asymptomatic patients.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of radiological left common iliac vein (LCIV) compression among the asymptomatic population and identify possible predictors. METHODS: Contrast-enhanced abdominal and/or pelvic computed tomography scans of eligible asymptomatic patients were examined. The LCIV diameter was measured from different horizontal planes in the venous phase using PACSView. Degree of LCIV compression (Dc) was calculated by a predefined formula and graded as insignificant (Dc < 25%), mild (≥25% Dc < 50%), moderate (≥50% Dc <75%), and severe (Dc ≥ 75%).

IgE-Dependent Food Sensitisation and Its Role in Clinical and Laboratory Presentation of Paediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

The rising prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and food allergies and their partially overlapping mechanisms such as microbiome diversity reduction raise questions about the role of allergies in IBD. While data on their comorbidity are available, analysis of IgE-sensitization's influence on the clinical presentation of IBD is lacking and is the aim of this study. Histories of 292 children with newly diagnosed IBD (173 cases of ulcerative colitis, 119 cases of Crohn's disease) were analyzed. Disease age of onset, activity, location, behaviour, and anthropometric and laboratory parame

Predictors of underweight among adult patients receiving antiretroviral therapy in Bishoftu general hospital, central Ethiopia: Case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Underweight affects the overall clinical outcome and quality of life and increases the risk of mortalities in Human immunodeficiency virus and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) patients. Though studies have examined the various determinants of being underweight in people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV), scanty evidence exists about the influence of dietary diversity scores and dietary counseling on underweight HIV patients in Ethiopia. This study aimed to identify the determinants of being underweight among adult patients receiving antiretroviral therapy at Bishoftu Genera

Severe lactic acidosis during tenofovir disoproxil fumarate and cobicistat combination for HIV patient.

Lactic acidosis is a rare but serious side effect in individuals receiving nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors. An underweight woman with HIV was admitted to our hospital because of nausea and diffuse myalgia. Her antiretroviral regimen had been changed to tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF)/emtricitabine and darunavir/cobicistat 3 months prior, after which her renal function had gradually declined. After admission, she was diagnosed with lactic acidosis, and a liver biopsy suggested mitochondrial damage. Her plasma tenofovir levels were elevated at the onset of lactic acidosis. We hyp

Frailty and sarcopenia within the earliest national Dutch childhood cancer survivor cohort (DCCSS-LATER): a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Childhood cancer survivors appear to be at increased risk of frailty and sarcopenia, but evidence on the occurrence of and high-risk groups for these aging phenotypes is scarce, especially in European survivors. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to assess the prevalence of and explore risk factors for pre-frailty, frailty, and sarcopenia in a national cohort of Dutch childhood cancer survivors diagnosed between 1963 and 2001. METHODS: Eligible individuals (alive at the time of study, living in the Netherlands, age 18-45 years, and had not previously declined to participate
