Optical coherence tomographic evaluation of the effect of cigarette smoking on vascular healing after sirolimus-eluting stent implantation.

Cigarette smoking is known to be deleterious to patients with coronary artery disease; however, the effect of smoking on vascular responses after coronary drug-eluting stent implantation is unknown. We sought to examine vascular response after sirolimus-eluting stent implantation in patients with ongoing smoking using optical coherence tomography, compared with former smokers and nonsmokers. We identified 181 sirolimus-eluting stents in 140 subjects who underwent follow-up optical coherence tomography imaging. Subjects were divided into 3 groups: current smokers (n = 28), former smokers (n = 3

A long-term follow-up of peripapillary retinoschisis with optic disc hypoplasia.

Peripapillary and macular retinoschisis are usually associated with optic disc pits. We report a rare case of peripapillary retinoschisis with optic disc hypoplasia. A 59-year-old woman presented with asthenopia. Her best-corrected visual acuity was 20/20 OD. Ophthalmoscopy of the right eye revealed peripapillary retinoschisis, optic disc hypoplasia and dilated and tortuous radial peripapillary capillaries. There was no obvious optic disc pit or vitreous traction on optical coherence tomography (OCT) or fluorescein angiography. OCT showed retinoschisis around the optic disc, a thin sheet of fe

Choroidal thickness in patients with a history of retinopathy of prematurity.

IMPORTANCE: The cause of reduced vision in patients with a history of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is not yet fully understood. The role of the choroid in ROP remains unknown and existing studies of choroidal thickness in patients with a history of ROP are limited. It might be helpful to understand the association of the choroid with ROP by measuring the choroidal thickness in patients with a history of ROP and correlating these findings with the visual outcome of these patients. OBJECTIVE: To examine choroidal thickness by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography in children with a h

Invasive Physiologic Assessment: From Fractional Flow Reserve to Full Physiology and Beyond.

Over 3 decades, invasive coronary physiology has evolved into a cornerstone of cardiovascular care. Fractional flow reserve (FFR) enabled lesion-specific assessment of epicardial stenoses, improving percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) selection beyond angiography. Recognition of ischemia without obstructive disease expanded its role, with contemporary testing integrating adenosine-based flow assessment and acetylcholine-based evaluation of endothelial and vasomotor function, allowing identification of angina with nonobstructive coronary arteries endotypes, and tailored therapy. Advanced Imaging to Assess Airway Dynamics.

Endoscopy remains the gold standard for assessing dynamic airway abnormalities in pediatric patients, but its invasiveness and variable interoperator agreement have driven interest in imaging-based alternatives. Four-dimensional computed tomography (CT) now enables objective quantification of tracheal collapse during free breathing, while photon-counting CT achieves effective doses approaching chest radiography, fundamentally altering the risk-benefit calculus for serial monitoring. MRI approaches-from real-time cine for obstructive sleep apnea localization to retrospectively gated techniques

[Adrenal adenoma presenting as serous chorioretinopathy complicated by exudative retinal detachment: a case report].

The case is presented on a 33-year-old woman with sudden vision loss for more than 20 days without a history of steroid use either locally or systemically. There was a history of connective tissue disease. The fundus fluorescein angiogram and optical coherence tomography showed multiple central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) complicated by exudative retinal detachment (ERD). Meanwhile, the computed tomography of the adrenal suggested an adrenal adenoma. After complete tumor resection, the visual and anatomical functions of this patient have been significantly improved. Moreover, recurrence of

[New technologies for glaucoma diagnosis require evaluation of their clinical application].

Optical coherence tomography (OCT), Heidelberg Retinal Tomography (HRT-II) and GDx have been used widely in glaucoma diagnosis for many years, but it is still uncertain in their practical value and clinical significance. Therefore, it requires an evaluation for the usefulness of each instrument in the diagnosis of glaucoma. The evaluation must be correct, standardized and strict in methodology, with emphasis on the early diagnosis and the concrete analysis of each parameter given by the different imaging instruments. Only if clinical application of these devices is combined with the practical

The pull of the macula: Optic disc dragging in large macular coloboma.

Macular coloboma is an excavation at the macula with defective or rudimentary retinal tissue. Here, we present an unusual case of large bilateral macular coloboma with dragging of optic disc. A 48-year-old diabetic male patient presented to our outpatient department with a history of diminution of vision and squint since childhood. Dilated fundus examination revealed bilateral large well-defined excavation at the macula with optic disc displaced temporally and temporal arcade vessels appeared straightened. Rest of the retina was normal. Optical coherence tomography and B-scan ultrasonography f

Bilateral Optic Nerve Head Drusen Complicated by Choroidal Neovascularization Misdiagnosed as Papilledema and Neuroretinitis.

We report a case of bilateral optic nerve head drusen complicated by choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in the left eye at presentation. The presence of optic disc and macular edema in addition to exudation led to the misdiagnosis of neuroretinitis at an outside medical center. Swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) and SSOCT angiography were critical in establishing the diagnosis and follow-up in a noninvasive manner. Secondary CNV associated with optic nerve head drusen responded well to intravitreal injections of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor in the left eye. Asymptoma

Use of ganglion cell layer analysis for diagnosing anti-glycoprotein neuromyelitis optica of oligodendrocyte myelin.

The case concerns a 26-year-old patient with bilateral recurrent optic neuritis episodes in the context of suspected neuromyelitis optica. In the first outbreak, she had greatly impaired visual acuity of the left eye, as well as seeing ganglion cell layer damage in both eyes in the optic coherence tomography, with evidence of a possible extensive lesion in the optic chiasma. Likewise, MRI with contrast showed a great involvement of the left optic nerve that compromises the chiasma increasing the suspicion of a neuromyelitis origin. Althogh the anti-myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) and

[Choroidal metastasis from clinically regressed prostate adenocarcinoma: imaging of a rare case].

INTRODUCTION: Choroidal metastases are often the revealing feature of malignant diseases. We report a rare case of prostatic adenocarcinoma metastases at the choroids, diagnosed and followed by fluorescein angiography (FA), indocyanine-green angiography (ICGA), and optical coherence tomography (OCT-3 Stratus). OBSERVATION: A 54-year-old man was referred to our department for decreased vision in his left eye lasting for 1 month. On ophthalmic evaluation, best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 20/20 in his right eye and 20/63 in his left eye. Biomicroscopic examination of the anterior segments

Homonymous Ganglion Cell Layer Thinning After Isolated Occipital Lesion: Macular OCT Demonstrates Transsynaptic Retrograde Retinal Degeneration.

A 48-year-old man was examined 24 months after medial and surgical treatment of an isolated well-circumscribed right occipital lobe abscess. An asymptomatic residual left homonymous inferior scotoma was present. Fundus examination revealed temporal pallor of both optic discs, and optical coherence tomography (OCT) revealed mild temporal loss of retinal nerve fiber layer in both eyes. No relative afferent pupillary defect was present. Assessment of the retinal ganglion cell layer demonstrated homonymous thinning in a pattern corresponding to the homonymous visual field loss. There were no abnor

Neuroprotective Strategies for Nonarteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy: A Systematic Review.

PURPOSE: Nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) is the second most common form of optic neuropathy. Most patients show no improvement over time. Until now, there is still no definitive therapy for NAION. The available literatures on the possible treatment of NAION are quite diverse and controversial. Neuroprotection strategies have been suggested as one of the potential treatments for NAION. This review aims to critically evaluate the literature on neuroprotective strategy for NAION. METHODS: This report was written in accordance with PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Sys

Morphology of Serous Retinal Detachment in Morning Glory Optic Disc Anomaly in a Patient before and after Treatment with Systemic Carboanhydrase Inhibitors.

BACKGROUND: Morning glory optic disc anomaly (MGODA) is a rare congenital defect of the optic nerve head. The optic nerve is enlarged, and its conical excavation is filled with glial tissue. It may be associated with cerebral malformations and ocular complications, whereas serous retinal detachment occurs in 38% of affected patients. Surgical treatment of detachment showed poor visual outcome in the past and conservative treatment options are scarce. CASE: A woman with MGODA presented in our clinic with sudden vision loss due to serous retinal detachment. She denied any previous ophthalmologi
