Exosomes are the smallest subset of extracellular signaling vesicles secreted by most cells with the ability to communicate with other tissues and cell types over long distances. Their use in regenerative medicine has gained tremendous momentum recently due to their ability to be utilized as therapeutic options for a wide array of various diseases. Over 5000 publications are currently being published on this topic yearly, many of which in the dental space. This extensive review article is the first scoping review aimed at summarizing all therapeutic uses of exosomes in regenerative dentistry.

Children living with HIV have a higher prevalence of oral diseases, including caries, but the mechanisms underlying this higher prevalence are not well understood. Here, we test the hypothesis that HIV infection is associated with a more cariogenic oral microbiome, characterized by an increase in bacteria involved in the pathogenesis of caries. We present data generated from supragingival plaques collected from 484 children representing three exposure groups: (i) children living with HIV (HI), (ii) children who were perinatally exposed but uninfected (HEU), and (iii) unexposed and therefore un

Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa) is a Gram-negative bacterial pathogen associated with periodontitis and nonoral diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and Alzheimer´s disease. Aa isolates with the serotypes a, b, and c are globally most prevalent. Importantly, isolates displaying these serotypes have different clinical presentations. While serotype b isolates are predominant in severe periodontitis, serotypes a and c are generally encountered in mild periodontitis or healthy individuals. It is currently unknown how these differences are reflected in the overall secretion of virulence fa

INTRODUCTION: In late 2019, an outbreak of a new coronavirus named severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 was detected in Wuhan, China. A great percentage of patients with this disease developed symptoms of dry cough, malaise, and a high fever. During this time, several patients requiring assessment and treatment of endodontic emergencies were directed to the School and Hospital of Stomatology at Wuhan University, Wuhan, China. We examined the characteristics of these patients.
METHODS: A total of 96 patients with a mean age of 42.24 ± 18.32 years visited the general and emergency de

The prevention and treatment of the periodontal diseases is based on accurate diagnosis, reduction or elimination of causative agents, risk management and correction of the harmful effects of disease. Prominent and confirmed risk factors or risk predictors for periodontitis in adults include smoking, diabetes, race, P. gingivalis, P. intermedia, low education, infrequent dental attendance and genetic influences. Several other specific periodontal bacteria, herpesviruses, increased age, male, sex, depression, race, traumatic occlusion and female osteoporosis in the presence of heavy dental calc

Periodontitis (PD) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are chronic inflammatory disorders that impose substantial individual and societal burdens worldwide. PD is characterized by progressive destruction of the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone, leading to tooth loss, impaired oral function, and sustained systemic inflammatory burden. RA, affecting approximately 0.5-1% of the population, is a chronic autoimmune disease marked by persistent synovial inflammation, progressive joint destruction, disability, and reduced quality of life. Increasing evidence indicates that these conditions are biolog

OBJECTIVES: Barriers limiting access to oral health significantly impact dental service utilization among socially marginalized youth, often resulting in unmet needs and poor oral health outcomes. Identifying and understanding these barriers is critical to inform the development of strategies to enhance oral healthcare access for this vulnerable population. This review examines the barriers restricting access to oral healthcare and unmet dental needs among socially marginalized youth worldwide, offering insight to guide the development of targeted interventions.
METHODS: A comprehensive searc

The Clinical Eye Score (CES) is a score to grade disease severity in peripheral neuropathy visually from videos of patients walking. It correlates strongly with state-of-the-art outcome measures for peripheral neuropathy in patients with CMT. Therefore, it may provide a solution for digital or remote follow-up examinations for adult patients with peripheral neuropathies.

Myelin is essential for rapid nerve impulse propagation and axon protection. Accordingly, defects in myelination or myelin maintenance lead to secondary axonal damage and subsequent degeneration. Studies utilizing genetic (CNPase-, MAG-, and PLP-null mice) and naturally occurring neuropathy models suggest that myelinating glia also support axons independently from myelin. Myelin protein zero (MPZ or P0), which is expressed only by Schwann cells, is critical for myelin formation and maintenance in the peripheral nervous system. Many mutations in MPZ are associated with demyelinating neuropathie

We report seven Charcot-Marie-Tooth 4B1 (CMT4B1) patients from four families with distinctive features, presenting with severe distal weakness and cranial nerve involvement. Patient from family 1 presented with congenital varus foot deformity, progressive distal and proximal weakness leading to loss of ambulation at 14 years, bilateral facial palsy and prominent bulbar involvement. In three siblings from family 2, still ambulant in the second decade, neuropathy was associated with marked sweating and Arnold-Chiari syndrome. Patient from family 3, wheelchair-bound by 17 years, suffered from rec

Scientific opportunities have never been better than today! The completion of the Human Genome project has sparked hope and optimism that cures for debilitating conditions can be achieved and tailored to individuals and communities. The availability of reference genome sequences and genetic variations as well as more precise correlations between genotype and phenotype have facilitated the progress made in finding solutions to clinical problems. While certain craniofacial and oral diseases previously deemed too difficult to tackle have benefited from basic science and technological advances ove

The purpose of this paper is to highlight an emerging phenomenon of osteonecrosis of the jaws that occurs in some patients who are on long-term bisphosphonate therapy. The condition can appear spontaneously or as a result of trauma, and is difficult to treat. Dental surgeons must be aware of patients who are at risk and institute appropriate preventive care. It is also important to recognize the condition when it does appear and refer appropriately. We present the first local case series of the condition showing varied clinical presentations and treatments.

BACKGROUND: The orbit is prone to being affected by an odontogenous infection, owing to its anatomical proximity to the maxillary sinus. A possible reason for an ophthalmic manifestation of a dental abscess is extraction of an acutely inflamed tooth.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The authors describe the treatment of a man who had painful swelling and redness in the area of his right eye after having a maxillary molar extracted a few days previous. A general dentist referred the patient to the clinic after he began to experience a progressive deterioration of vision of his right eye. Emergency surgical i

Segmental odontomaxillary dysplasia has only recently been delineated from other osseo-odontogenic dysplasias. Yet, this seldom-reported developmental abnormality might be diagnosed by a unique combination of clinical, radiographic, and histologic findings. Unilateral maxillary hyperplasia combined with displaced molars and unusual bone trabeculation is quite obvious at an early age. Recognition and subsequent reporting by dental specialists is encouraged to more clearly define the natural progression and the appropriate treatment of this abnormality.

Patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) may develop a peripheral neuropathy, sometimes attributed to nutritional deficiency. Other patients present with a demyelinating neuropathy which is presumed to be the result of an autoimmune process that affects both the central and peripheral nervous systems. We report a case of concurring MS and demyelinating neuropathy, without a positive family history, in whom genetic testing proved the neuropathy to be hereditary and not autoimmune. Hereditary neuropathy should be a consideration in sporadic cases of peripheral neuropathy and MS.

Ectopic eruption of the teeth in the sinonasal tract and the migration of a displaced dental fragment from the maxillary sinus to the nose are two rare phenomena. This paper reports three cases: an asymptomatic ectopic tooth within the nasal septum, an ectopic maxillary sinus tooth causing repeated attacks of sinusitis, and a dental root that reached the nose through the maxillary antrum associated with Aspergillus sinusitis. The etiology, diagnosis, complications, and treatment of simonasal teeth are discussed.

A survey was done in a sample of 105 patients, 45 females and 60 males, from October 1989 to January 1990, in the Diabetes Clinic of Mekane Hiwet Hospital, Asmara, Ethiopia. The objective was to assess the incidence of dental and periodontal problems among diabetic patients. Dental caries was found in 79%, with no significant relation to age of patient or duration of illness. Gingival recession was found in 70.5%, gingival inflammation in 65.7% and loss of attachment in 73.3%; none of them related to age of the patient or duration of diabetes. However, 63.5% of the gingival recession and 78.3%
