Adenoviral Vector-Based Vaccine Platforms for Developing the Next Generation of Influenza Vaccines.

Ever since the discovery of vaccines, many deadly diseases have been contained worldwide, ultimately culminating in the eradication of smallpox and polio, which represented significant medical achievements in human health. However, this does not account for the threat influenza poses on public health. The currently licensed seasonal influenza vaccines primarily confer excellent strain-specific protection. In addition to the seasonal influenza viruses, the emergence and spread of avian influenza pandemic viruses such as H5N1, H7N9, H7N7, and H9N2 to humans have highlighted the urgent need to ad

VERTEBROPLASTY IN THE TREATMENT OF VERTEBRAL FRACTURES CAUSED BY PLASMACYTOMA.

The aim of this study was to compare and evaluate clinical results before and after vertebroplasty in the treatment of myeloma-induced vertebral fractures. Success of the surgery was defined by increased or reduced pain intensity before and after the treatment, as assessed using the visual analog scale (VAS). The study was designed as a retrospective-prospective study. The study included 26 patients, 14 women and 12 men. Data on patients treated for myeloma-induced vertebral fractures were collected at the Department of Orthopedics, Osijek University Hospital Centre. The following data were an

Alginate Ototoxicity in the Mouse Model.

Objective To determine whether alginate exposure to the round window of the mouse causes any measurable ototoxicity. Study Design Prospective animal study. Setting Basic science laboratory affiliated with a tertiary care university medical center. Subjects and Methods After Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee approval, 5 adult mice were obtained and underwent bullostomy and round window niche application of alginate. Auditory brainstem response (ABR) tests were completed at baseline prior to the procedure and also 5, 14, and 30 days postprocedure. Results were compared. At termination

Genotyping and Quantifying Lyme Pathogen Strains by Deep Sequencing of the Outer Surface Protein C (ospC) Locus.

A mixed infection of a single tick or host by Lyme disease spirochetes is common and a unique challenge for the diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance of Lyme disease. Here, we describe a novel protocol for differentiating Lyme strains on the basis of deep sequencing of the hypervariable outer surface protein C locus (ospC). Improving upon the traditional DNA-DNA hybridization method, the next-generation sequencing-based protocol is high throughput, quantitative, and able to detect new pathogen strains. We applied the method to more than one hundred infected Ixodes scapularis ticks collected f

[Suture simulator - Cleft palate surgery].

INTRODUCTION: Cleft palate requires surgery in the first years of life, furthermore repairing anatomically the soft and hard palate is complex on a surgical level because of the fine tissues and the local intraoral configuration. It is valuable to train first on simulators before going to the operating room. However, there is no material dedicated to learning how to perform intraoral sutures in cleft palate surgery. We made one, in an artisanal manner, in order to practice before the real surgical gesture. BUILDING THE SIMULATOR: The simulator was designed based on precise anatomical data. A

Spatial Mapping in the Rat Olfactory Bulb by Odor and Direct Electrical Stimulation.

OBJECTIVES: To directly measure the spatial mapping in the olfactory bulb by odor presentation and by direct electrical stimulation. STUDY DESIGN: Experimental (animal). SETTING: University research laboratory. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Odor (n = 8) and electrical stimulation (n = 4) of the olfactory bulb in rats were used to demonstrate the spatial mapping of neural responses in the olfactory bulb. Both multiunit responses to odor stimulation and evoked potential responses to localized electrical stimulation were measured in different regions of the olfactory bulb. RESULTS: Responses that wer

Characterization of Polymorphic Forms of Rifaximin.

Rifaximin is a gut-selective oral antimicrobial that has no systemic adverse effects compared with placebo. It is used for the treatment of hepatic encephalopathy, traveler's diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, Clostridium difficile infection, ulcerative colitis, and acute diarrhea. The crystalline form present in rifaximin, α, has minimal systemic absorption compared to the amorphous form. The objective of this study was to obtain polymorphic forms of rifaximin using recrystallization processes. The forms were characterized and studied by thermal analysis, X-ray powder diffraction, scanning e

Multi-professional training for obstetric emergencies in a U.S. hospital over a 7-year interval: an observational study.

OBJECTIVE: Birth is less safe than it can be. We adapted the UK-developed PROMPT (PRactical Obstetric Multi-Professional Training) course to local practices and initiated annual training. STUDY DESIGN: This observational study used quality assurance data from University of Kansas Hospital 2 years before and 7 years after intervention encompassing 14,309 consecutive deliveries from January 2006 through December 2014. An events/trials approach was applied to changes in proportions over time. RESULT: PROMPT was associated with progressive decreases in rates (P<0.05) of brachial plexus injury an

Outcome of Extremely Low Birth Weight Babies in Zaria; A Ten-Year Review.

BACKGROUND: Survival among extremely low birth weight (ELBW) babies (birth weight below 1000grams) in resource limited settings is still very low. The study aimed to determine the correlation between materno-foetal factors and outcome in this category of neonates. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective study in which patients' records admitted into the Neonatal Unit of Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital between January 2005 and December 2014 were retrieved. Information on neonates weighing < 1000 g were extracted and analyzed. Survival at discharge was the primary outcome. RESULTS: The overall

Pulsed Radiofrequency of Dorsal Root Ganglia for the Treatment of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome in an Adolescent with Poliomyelitis Sequel: A Case Report.

OBJECTIVE: Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a painful and disabling syndrome in which the patient presents with neuropathic pain, edema, or vasomotor or pseudomotor abnormalities that are often refractory to treatment. Polio paralysis is caused by the damage or destruction of motor neurons in the spine, which lead to corresponding muscle paralysis. This report is a case report on the application of a pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) current to dorsal root ganglia (DRG) for the treatment of CRPS type 1 in an adolescent patient. DESIGN: Single case report. SETTING: Selcuk University Hospita
