World Sleep Society recommendations for the use of wearable consumer health trackers that monitor sleep.

Wearable consumer health trackers (CHTs) are increasingly used for sleep monitoring, yet their utility remains debated within the sleep community. To navigate these perspectives, we propose pragmatic, actionable recommendations for users, clinicians, researchers, and manufacturers to support CHT usage and development. We provide an overview of the evolution of multi-sensor CHTs, detailing common sensors and sleep-relevant metrics. We advocate for standardized 'fundamental sleep measures' across manufacturers, distinguishing these from proprietary exploratory metrics with future potential. We o

The relationship of sleep problems between eight-year-old South African children and their mothers.

BACKGROUND: Sleep problems are common among children and mothers. However, little is understood about sleep behaviours in low- and middle-income countries. Here we examine sleep behaviours and predictors among black, low-income, South African mothers and their eight-year-old children over time. METHODS: We administered standardised measures of sleep behaviours at eight years post-birth to a population cohort of mothers and children in 24 neighbourhoods of Cape Town, South Africa, in 2009-10. We assessed mothers and children six times over eight years with 84% retention since pregnancy. While

High-resolution awake mouse fMRI at 14 tesla.

High-resolution awake mouse functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) remains challenging despite extensive efforts to address motion-induced artifacts and stress. This study introduces an implantable radio frequency (RF) surface coil design that minimizes image distortion caused by the air/tissue interface of mouse brains while simultaneously serving as a headpost for fixation during scanning. Furthermore, this study provides a thorough acclimation method used to accustom animals to the MRI environment minimizing motion-induced artifacts. Using a 14 T scanner, high-resolution fMRI enabled

Emotion regulation, depressive symptoms, and sleep problems in adolescents: A four-wave random-intercept cross-lagged panel model.

Depressive symptoms and sleep problems are detrimental for adolescents, with emotion regulation related to both problems. The present study explores emotion regulation as a potential mediator of the reciprocal associations between depressive symptoms and sleep problems and examines gender differences. A total of 1,535 adolescents (47.4% girls; baseline Mage = 13.19 years) were included in this four-wave longitudinal study with 6-month intervals. We used random-intercept cross-lagged panel models to examine our research questions. The results indicated that increases in sleep problems significa

How sleep disturbance promotes myopia: A perspective on potential biological mechanisms.

Myopia is an urgent public health concern. However, its pathogenesis remains unclear. Sleep disturbance is a potential environmental risk factor for myopia; however, the underlying mechanisms linking sleep and myopia remain largely unexplored. This review outlines three pathways through which sleep disturbance may contribute to the onset and progression of myopia. First, disruption of the circadian rhythm associated with sleep disturbance alters retinal dopamine dynamics and the balance between dopamine receptor subtypes, ultimately promoting myopia, with melatonin and intrinsically photosensi

Association between sleep disturbance and metabolic dysfunctions in adipose tissue: Insights into melatonin's role.

The increased prevalence of sleep disturbances in modern society is frequently linked to various metabolic disorders, including insulin resistance, obesity, hypertension, fatty liver disease, and cardiometabolic complications. Melatonin, a pineal gland-secreted neurohormone, plays a pivotal role in maintaining the circadian rhythm. It is involved in regulating adipose tissue development, lipid accumulation, browning of white adipose tissue, and activation of brown adipose tissue. The adipose tissue is a dynamic endocrine organ that secretes hormones and cytokines. Recent research has highlight

Sleep Symptoms in Migraine.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review replicated and highlight novel studies of sleep in children and adults with episodic and chronic migraine. RECENT FINDINGS: Attack-related sleep symptoms are most common in the prodrome and may represent early activation of the hypothalamus rather than migraine triggers. Interictally, patients with migraine report poor sleep quality and high rates of insomnia symptoms. Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia in adults and adolescents with chronic migraine and comorbid insomnia results in significant improvement on their headache burden. Thus far, objective studi

Vitamin D deficiency: A forgotten aspect in sleep disorders? A critical update.

Over the past few years, there has been a surge in interest regarding the connection between sleep duration and quality, sleep disorders, mainly Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and Vitamin D. There is growing evidence to support a new role of Vitamin D in the maintenance and regulation of optimal sleep. Furthermore, a notable link has been identified between OSA and a decrease in serum Vitamin D levels, which appears to intensify as the severity of sleep apnea worsens. Vitamin D status could also potentially serve as a mediator or provide an explanation for the association between OSA and cardi

Exploring the association between sleep problems and loneliness in adolescents: Potential mediating effects of rumination and resilience.

Sleep problems positively predict loneliness to a large extent, which would harm adolescent health. However, little is known about the underlying mechanism. This research investigates the potential mediating roles of rumination and resilience in the relation among adolescents and further examines the changing relationships. In Study 1, 1056 adolescents from two schools completed self-reported measures of sleep problems, loneliness, rumination, and resilience. We found that sleep problems were positively associated with loneliness, and that rumination and resilience mediated this relationship,

Beyond Wolfram Syndrome 1: The WFS1 Gene's Role in Alzheimer's Disease and Sleep Disorders.

The WFS1 gene was first identified in Wolfram Syndrome 1 (WS1), a rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder characterized by severe and progressive neurodegenerative changes. WFS1's role in various cellular mechanisms, particularly in calcium homeostasis and the modulation of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, suggests its potential involvement in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and sleep disorders. Because it is involved in maintaining ER balance, calcium signaling, and stress responses, WFS1 plays a multifaceted role in neuronal health. Numerous studies have shown that the absen
