Does vascular stiffness predict white matter hyperintensity burden in ischemic heart disease with preserved ejection fraction?

The survival rate of patients with ischemic heart disease (IHD) is increasing. However, survivors experience increased risk for neurological complications. The mechanisms for this increased risk are unknown. We tested the hypothesis that patients with IHD have greater carotid and cerebrovascular stiffness, and these indexes predict white matter small vessel disease. Fifty participants (age, 40-78 yr), 30 with IHD with preserved ejection fraction and 20 healthy age-matched controls, were studied using ultrasound imaging of the common carotid artery (CCA) and middle cerebral artery (MCA), as wel…

Characteristic patterns of white matter tract injury in sport-related concussion: An image based meta-analysis.

Sports-related concussion (SRC) is sustained by millions of people per year, yet the spatiotemporal patterns of white matter (WM) injury remain poorly understood. Several SRC studies have implemented the standardised approach Tract-Based Spatial Statistics (TBSS). The aim of this image-based meta-analysis was to identify consensus patterns of SRC-related WM injury across TBSS studies. We included studies comparing the diffusion MRI measurement fractional anisotropy (FA) in SRC or subconcussive injury vs. controls using TBSS, as FA is the most frequently examined diffusion tensor imaging metric…

The Underreporting of Concussion: Differences Between Black and White High School Athletes Likely Stemming from Inequities.

Previous studies have found that Black high school athletes have poorer knowledge about concussions and have fewer sports medicine healthcare resources than White athletes, but research on concussion disclosure by race is still needed. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine racial differences in concussion reporting behaviors between Black and White high school athletes. This cross-sectional study administered surveys to 577 high school athletes (64.5% Black; 72.3% males; 16.02 ± 1.2 years) from 14 schools (title I, n = 9; non-title I, n = 5). The survey included self-reported ite…

White matter disruption in obsessive-compulsive disorder revealed by meta-analysis of tract-based spatial statistics.

BACKGROUND: Exploring white matter (WM) microstructural alterations is a momentous step for gaining insights about underlying mechanisms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and improving the efficacy of therapies for this condition. Many tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) studies have revealed abnormalities of fractional anisotropy (FA; an index of WM integrity) in OCD. However, research works have not drawn robust conclusions. Therefore, we integrated the findings of TBSS studies to identify the most consistent FA changes in OCD using meta-analytical approach. METHODS: Online databases…

Diagnosis and long-term management of post-traumatic seizures in a white-crowned pionus (Pionus senilis).

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 13-year-old female white-crowned pionus (Pionus senilis) was examined because of seizures 22 months after it was treated for a traumatic brain injury (TBI) characterized by vision loss, hemiparesis, nystagmus, circling, and head tilt. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Bloodwork performed during the initial seizure workup revealed hypercalcemia and hypercholesterolemia, which were attributed to vitellogenesis given the bird's previous egg-laying history and recent onset of reproductive behavior. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain revealed diffuse right pallium atrophy with multifocal…

White matter alterations in patients with obstructive sleep apnea: a systematic review of diffusion MRI studies.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder, which causes wide range of neurological and psychiatric symptoms. Several studies demonstrated structural and functional brain alterations using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques. Recently, diffusion-based brain MRI studies in patients with OSA showed changes in diffusion measures that represent various impairments of white matter (WM) integrity. The various finding may be due to diffusion indices employed for detection of neural impairment at the microstructural level, phase of the disease and the goals of studies…

Bifunctional peptides with antioxidant and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitory activity in vitro from egg white hydrolysates.

Oxidative stress is frequently associated with hypertension. However, the studies on antihypertensive peptides usually focus on ACE inhibitory activity and ignore antioxidant activity of bioactive peptides. In our research, we optimized enzymatic hydrolysis condition of egg white protein. After that we evaluated both the antioxidant and the ACE-inhibitory activity in vitro of egg white hydrolysates and its purified fractions. Four peptides, LAPYK, SVIRW, PKSVIRW, and ADWAK, which can match to ovotransferrin were identified from fraction with the highest bioactivity. Among them, LAPYK possessed…

Measurement invariance of the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale across black and white adults with cocaine use disorder.

This study tests for measurement invariance of impulsivity assessed by the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS) across Black and White adults with cocaine use disorder and examines the association of BIS impulsivity with treatment retention and outcomes. Data from four clinical trials were combined providing a total sample of 302 participants with cocaine abuse/dependence (42% Black, 58% White, 44% female, agemean = 40.22, SD = 9.26). We used multi-group confirmatory factor analyses to test for measurement invariance across race and examined bivariate correlations between BIS impulsivity and trea…

Reperfusion Injury (RPI)/White Cord Syndrome (WCS) Due to Cervical Spine Surgery: A Diagnosis of Exclusion.

BACKGROUND: Following acute cervical spinal cord decompression, a subset of patients may develop acute postoperative paralysis due to Reperfusion Injury (RPI)/White Cord Syndrome (WCS). Pathophysiologically, this occurs due to the immediate restoration of normal blood flow to previously markedly compressed, and under-perfused/ischemic cord tissues. On emergent postoperative MR scans, the classical findings for RPI/ WCS include new or expanded, and focal or diffuse intramedullary hyperintense cord signals consistent with edema/ischemia, swelling, and/or intrinsic hematoma. To confirm RPI/WCS, M…

Profiling analysis reveals the potential contribution of long non-coding RNAs to preterm white matter injury.

AIMS: The aim of this study was to investigate the molecular mechanism underlying preterm white matter injury (WMI) via the identification and functional analysis of differentially expressed long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) and mRNAs. MAIN METHODS: A neonatal rat model of preterm WMI was established by ligating the common carotid artery and hypoxia induction. RNA sequencing was performed to analyze gene expression profiles of brain samples. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes (KEGG) analyses were performed to evaluate functions of target mRNAs. A co-expression network was generat…

Early Progressive Circumpapillary Lesion as Atypical Presentation of Multiple Evanescent White Dot Syndrome: A Case Report.

Classical clinical findings of multiple evanescent white dot syndrome (MEWDS) include multiple, small white dots scattered throughout the posterior pole, foveal granularity, posterior vitreous cells, and mild optic disc swelling. We describe the case of a 35-year-old man who was admitted to our department with an unusual presentation of MEWDS at the early onset of the disease. A unilateral circumpapillary retinal white spot was observed. Spectral domain optical coherence tomography demonstrated irregularities of the retinal pigment epithelium and disruptions of the outer retinal layers around …

A genome-wide significant association on chromosome 15 for congenital entropion in Swiss White Alpine sheep.

Entropion is a known congenital disorder in sheep presumed to be heritable but no causative genetic variant has been reported. Affected lambs show a variable inward rolling of the lower eyelids leading to blindness in severe cases. In Switzerland, the Swiss White Alpine (SWA) breed showed a significantly higher prevalence for entropion than other breeds. A GWAS using 150 SWA sheep (90 affected lambs and 60 controls), based on 600k SNP data, revealed a genome-wide significant signal on chromosome 15. The 0.2 Mb associated region contains functional candidate genes, SMTNL1 and CTNND1. Pathogenic…

The effect of white matter signal abnormalities on default mode network connectivity in mild cognitive impairment.

Regions within the default mode network (DMN) are particularly vulnerable to Alzheimer's disease pathology and mechanisms of DMN disruption in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are still unclear. White matter lesions are presumed to be mechanistically linked to vascular dysfunction whereas cortical atrophy may be related to neurodegeneration. We examined associations between DMN seed-based connectivity, white matter lesion load, and cortical atrophy in MCI and cognitively healthy controls. MCI showed decreased functional connectivity (FC) between the precuneus-seed and bilateral lateral temporal…

Nodal Global Efficiency in Front-Parietal Lobe Mediated Periventricular White Matter Hyperintensity (PWMH)-Related Cognitive Impairment.

White matter hyperintensity (WMH) is widely observed in the elderly population and serves as a key indicator of cognitive impairment (CI). However, the underlying mechanism remains to be elucidated. Herein, we investigated the topological patterns of resting state functional networks in WMH subjects and the relationship between the topological measures and CI. A graph theory-based analysis was employed in the resting-state functional magnetic resonance scans of 112 subjects (38 WMH subjects with cognitive impairment without dementia (CIND), 36 WMH subjects with normal cognition and 38 healthy …

Association of Blood Pressure Variability and Intima-Media Thickness With White Matter Hyperintensities in Hypertensive Patients.

Background and Purpose: Ambulatory blood pressure variability (ABPV), ABP, and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) are closely associated with white matter hyperintensities (WMH), and few studies focused on establishing effective models based on ABP, ABPV, and IMT to predict the WMH burden. We aimed to evaluate the value of a predictive model based on the metrics of ABP, ABPV, and IMT, which were independently associated with the WMH burden. Methods: We retrospectively enrolled 140 hypertensive inpatients for physical examinations in Shanghai East Hospital, Tongji University School of Medicin…
