Sexual dimorphism of the human fetal pelvis exists at the onset of primary ossification.

Human adolescent and adult skeletons exhibit sexual dimorphism in the pelvis. However, the degree of sexual dimorphism of the human pelvis during prenatal development remains unclear. Here, we performed high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging-assisted pelvimetry on 72 human fetuses (males [M]: females [F], 34:38; 21 sites) with crown-rump lengths (CRL) of 50-225 mm (the onset of primary ossification). We used multiple regression analysis to examine sexual dimorphism with CRL as a covariate. Females exhibit significantly smaller pelvic inlet anteroposterior diameters (least squares mean, [F]

Sex- and age-dependent impacts of nicotine and ethanol binge drinking on the brain: Insights from preclinical research.

Electronic cigarette use among adolescents is a growing concern, not only due to the high incidence of co-use with other substances, such as alcohol, but also due to the fact brain is still maturing during this period. Combined exposure to alcohol and nicotine leads to plastic adaptation of crucial circuits in the brain, which can contribute to the development of addiction. It is well established that nicotine exposure can facilitate alcohol binge drinking, and vice-versa, in a sex-, age- and exposure-dependent manner. Nonetheless, the central mechanisms underlying the synergistic relationship

Pre-and post-HSCT use of TKI therapy for fusion-driven B-ALL: A case series of five pediatric, adolescent and young adult patients.

BACKGROUND: The development of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) has significantly improved survival rates among patients with Philadelphia chromosome (Ph+) B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL). Ph-like B-ALL patients lack the BCR::ABL1 translocation but share gene expression profiles with Ph+ B-ALL. The role of TKIs for Ph-like patients pre- and post-hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is not yet clear. CASE: Here we present five cases of pediatric, adolescent, and young adult patients who presented with Ph-like B-ALL or CML in B-ALL blast phase who were treated with person

Characterizing Alcohol Expectancies in the ABCD Study: Associations with Sociodemographic Factors, the Immediate Social Environment, and Genetic Propensities.

Alcohol expectancies (AEs) are associated with likelihood of alcohol initiation and subsequent alcohol use disorders. It is unclear whether genetic predisposition to alcohol use and/or related traits contributes to shaping how one expects to feel when drinking alcohol. We used the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study to examine associations between genetic propensities (i.e., polygenic risk for problematic alcohol use, depression, risk-taking), sociodemographic factors (i.e., parent income), and the immediate social environment (i.e., peer use and disapproval toward alcohol) and positi

Children subjected to family violence: A retrospective study of experiences of trauma-focused treatment.

Exposure to adverse childhood experiences is a risk factor for the development of serious psychiatric and somatic illness. Although trauma-focused therapy is effective in reducing symptoms, not all children benefit from it. To improve treatment efficacy, the children's perspective on what they perceive as helpful versus hindering is necessary. This study aimed, retrospectively, to explore how children exposed to family violence experienced treatment at the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service. Seventeen children and youths were interviewed 4-5 years after treatment. The thematic analysis

Activity-based anorexia in adolescent female rats causes changes in brain mitochondrial dynamics.

Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is associated with a high rate of morbidity and mortality as well as a high rate of relapse. The molecular mechanisms underlying the progression of the disorder or the relapses are largely unknown. Patients with AN have been shown to have increased oxidative stress, but its involvement in the development in the disease is unknown. We have previously shown that adolescent female rats undergoing the activity-based anorexia (ABA) paradigm also show signs of oxidative stress. Due to their role in the release of reactive oxygen species (ROS), mitochondria are of high interest

Relationship Between Neighborhood Poverty and Externalizing Symptoms in Children: Mediation and Moderation by Environmental Factors and Brain Structure.

Children living in poverty exhibit worse mental health outcomes, and various environmental and neurological risk factors may contribute to or mitigate this relationship. However, previous research has not examined the interplay of neighborhood SES, mental health, and relevant mechanisms. We examined the extent to which neighborhood poverty uniquely contributes to children's internalizing/externalizing disorder symptoms, as well as identified whether brain measures, toxin levels, and neighborhood threat mediated this relationship and whether socioemotional support moderated it. Data were collec

Prenatal Effects of Nicotine on Obesity Risks: A Narrative Review.

Nicotine usage by mothers throughout pregnancy has been observed to relate to numerous deleterious effects in children, especially relating to obesity. Children who have prenatally been exposed to nicotine tend to have lower birth weights, with an elevated risk of becoming overweight throughout development and into their adolescent and adult life. There are numerous theories as to how this occurs: catch-up growth theory, thrifty phenotype theory, neurotransmitter or endocrine imbalances theory, and a more recent examination on the genetic factors relating to obesity risk. In addition to the ne

Dose Selection for Phase III Clinical Evaluation of Gepotidacin (GSK2140944) in the Treatment of Uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infections.

Antibiotics are the current standard-of-care treatment for uncomplicated urinary tract infections (uUTIs). However, increasing rates of bacterial antibiotic resistance necessitate novel therapeutic options. Gepotidacin is a first-in-class triazaacenaphthylene antibiotic that selectively inhibits bacterial DNA replication by interaction with the bacterial subunits of DNA gyrase (GyrA) and topoisomerase IV (ParC). Gepotidacin is currently in clinical development for the treatment of uUTIs and other infections. In this article, we review data for gepotidacin from nonclinical studies, including in

Lack of Abdominal Stability and Control as a Possible Contributor to Rectus Femoris Avulsion Fracture in the Adolescent Soccer Player: A Case Report.

PURPOSE: To describe evaluation and physical therapy treatment for an athlete who is male and 13 years old with healing bilateral rectus femoris avulsion fractures. SUMMARY OF KEY POINTS: Fractures of the anterior inferior iliac spine may be linked to poor abdominal stability in soccer athletes who are male and an adolescent. The development and use of an abdominal stability screening tool could be an efficient and effective way to determine fracture risk and guide prevention programs. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE: Following 8 weeks of conservative physical therapy t

Ibuprofen-Induced Aseptic Meningitis in a Male Adolescent with Intracranial Hypertension and Visual Impairment: A Case Report.

Drug-induced aseptic meningitis (DIAM) is a rare complication of certain drugs, most commonly reported with ibuprofen use. The present study reports on a male adolescent with intracranial hypertension and visual impairment accompanied by DIAM. We present a 16-year-old male patient who after ibuprofen consumption displayed headache, fever, photophobia, and blurred vision following heavy exercises. Examination of cerebrospinal fluid showed a mononuclear pleocytosis and an increase in protein concentration. Other examinations had normal results. The development of common clinical signs following

Concurrent diabetic ketoacidosis and pancreatitis in Paediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia receiving L-asparaginase.

BACKGROUND: Although hyperglycemia and pancreatitis are known side effects of L-asparaginase, both contributing to the development of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is unfamiliar in literature. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of an adolescent girl, recently diagnosed with ALL, who presented with pain in abdomen and breathing difficulty following chemotherapy with L-asparaginase. On subsequent evaluation, she was found to have high anion gap metabolic acidosis, hyperglycemia and ketonuria. Ultrasonogram showed bulky pancreas. DKA was managed with fluid correction and insulin infusion. Pancrea

Editorial: Parental Depression Does Not Impede Benefits From Behavioral Parent Training.

Behavioral parent training (BPT) programs are considered the gold standard for intervening in early-onset conduct disorders.1 Our understanding of the disorder etiology has evolved from a focus on the coercive parent-child interaction to include more complex considerations, including gene-environment interactions.2 Refining our understanding of prevention and early intervention for these common and costly disorders is an important public health priority, because an estimated 3% of children and their families are affected, compromising adolescent and adult outcomes.2 As detailed in a recent rev

Dual effects of a gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist on an adolescent girl with pelvic congestion syndrome and precocious puberty: a case report.

Pelvic congestion syndrome (PCS) typically causes chronic non-cyclical abdominal pain with a considerable negative effect on the quality of life of women. However, pediatric cases with PCS are limited and non-invasive therapy for adolescent patients has not been reported. We report here a 13-year-old girl who presented with intermittent abdominal pain since the age of 2 years and her symptoms further deteriorated after breast development at 6 years and 9 months old. PCS and coexistent idiopathic central precocious puberty were finally diagnosed on the basis of tortuous ovarian and pelvic veins

Prolonged Untreated Disease and Limited English Proficiency: A Case of Van Wyk-Grumbach Syndrome.

Children from families with limited English proficiency have worse health outcomes than those from English-speaking families, likely related to the impact of a variety of social determinants on an increased risk of delayed presentation, diagnosis, and loss to follow-up. Van Wyk-Grumbach syndrome (VWGS) is a result of prolonged untreated primary hypothyroidism and early diagnosis of hypothyroidism is critical to prevent VWGS from developing. Whether social determinants of health, particularly limited English proficiency, impact the development, diagnosis, and treatment of VWGS has not been disc

Germline and somatic genetics of osteosarcoma - connecting aetiology, biology and therapy.

Clinical outcomes and treatment modalities for osteosarcoma, the most common primary cancer of bone, have changed very little over the past 30 years. The peak incidence of osteosarcoma occurs during the adolescent growth spurt, which suggests that bone growth and pubertal hormones are important in the aetiology of the disease. Tall stature, high birth weight and certain inherited cancer predisposition syndromes are well-described risk factors for osteosarcoma. Common genetic variants are also associated with osteosarcoma. The somatic genome of osteosarcoma is highly aneuploid, exhibits extensi

Multifocal myoclonus as a heralding manifestation of Wilson disease.

Wilson disease (WD) is one of the few curable movement disorders that manifests with varied presentations so that WD needs to be considered in any patient with a movement disorder under the age of 50 years. Although WD is one of the causes of myoclonus, it is rarely seen in WD and usually as an associated finding. We report a case of an adolescent female patient of WD who presented with cortical multifocal myoclonus of 6-month duration with later development of generalized dystonia, extrapyramidal syndrome, and cognitive decline. Kayser-Fleischer ring was present on slit lamp examination. Seru

The essential role of hippocampal alpha6 subunit-containing GABAA receptors in maternal separation stress-induced adolescent depressive behaviors.

Exposure to early stressful adverse life events such as maternal separation severely impacts the development of the nervous system. Using immunohistochemistry, quantitative PCR and Western blot approaches, we found that alpha6 subunit-containing GABAA receptors (Gabra6-containing GABAA Rs) were expressed on hippocampal interneurons of adolescent rats. Maternal separation stress (MS) from postnatal day 2 to15 significantly reduced Gabra6 expression and provoked depressive behaviors such as anhedonia. Furosemide, the selective antagonist of Gabra6-containing GABAARs, strongly increased peak ampl

Predicting the transition from anxiety to depressive symptoms in early adolescence: Negative anxiety response style as a moderator of sequential comorbidity.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety often precedes depression. The anxiety response styles theory of comorbidity suggests anxious individuals with a tendency to ruminate or make hopeless attributions about anxiety symptoms (negative anxiety response styles [NARS]) are more vulnerable to subsequent depressive symptoms. However, this theory has never been tested in adolescence, when the anxiety-depression transition may frequently occur, or using an extended (one-year) follow-up period. METHOD: 128 early adolescent girls (M=12.39 years) participated with caregivers in a one-year longitudinal study. At baseline

Pubertal induction in hypogonadism: Current approaches including use of gonadotrophins.

Primary disorders of the gonad or those secondary to abnormalities of the hypothalamic pituitary axis result in hypogonadism. The range of health problems of childhood and adolescence that affect this axis has increased, as most children now survive chronic illness, but many have persisting deficits in gonadal function as a result of their underlying condition or its treatment. An integrated approach to hormone replacement is needed to optimize adult hormonal and bone health, and to offer opportunities for fertility induction and preservation that were not considered possible in the past.
