Current Practices for Preventing Inguinal Hernia During Radical Prostatectomy: Findings From the "Anatomy on the Border" Consensus Survey by the Japan Society for Endoscopic Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Inguinal hernia (IH) occurs relatively frequently after radical prostatectomy (RP) and can impair patients' quality of life. In recent years, most RPs in Japan have been performed robotically; however, strategies for preventing postoperative IH remain diverse and are not clearly defined. METHODS: In July 2024, the Japan Society for Endoscopic Surgery conducted an anonymous, web-based survey of 114 members of the Japanese Urological Association to assess intraoperative IH prevention practices during RP. Twenty-seven urologists responded (response rate: 24%), providing information o

Computer assisted surgical anatomy mapping (CASAM) of the distal Posterior Interosseous Nerve (PIN) and its relation to the wrist arthroscopy portals: A cadaver study.

INTRODUCTION: The distal Posterior Interosseous Nerve (PIN) plays an important part in the sensory innervation of the wrist joint. Introduction of the arthroscopy portals during wrist arthroscopy might injure the PIN. The anatomic variation in the trajectory of the PIN and the proximity to the dorsal arthroscopy portals have not yet been fully explored. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Computer assisted surgical anatomy mapping (CASAM) is a technique to digitally compute and merge photographic images using anatomic landmarks and visualize variation in anatomy. A standard wrist arthroscopy procedure was…

The Genitofemoral Nerve Is the Structure Closest to the Tendon Footprint and Is Most at Risk for Iatrogenic Injury During Proximal Adductor Longus Repair: A Cadaveric Anatomy Study.

PURPOSE: To identify structures at risk during proximal adductor longus repair and to report observed distances between these structures and the adductor longus (AL) footprint. METHODS: Eight hemipelves from fresh cadaver whole-body specimens were dissected using a previously established surgical approach. The tendinous attachment of the AL was scored into the underlying bone and the footprint size was measured in millimeters. A guidewire was placed at the footprint center along the longitudinal axis of the resected AL muscle. Utilizing a digital caliper, the proximity of key anatomic structu

High-resolution ultrasound of the supra- and infraclavicular levels of the brachial plexus including the axillary nerve: imaging anatomy based on multiplanar reconstructions and technical guide.

PURPOSE: The diagnosis of peripheral nerve injuries remains challenging. Electromyography and nerve conduction studies do not allow precise localization of the lesion and differentiation between lesions in continuity and non-continuity in cases with complete axonotmesis. Improved ultrasound technology allows the examination of almost the entire peripheral nervous system. The complex sono-anatomy of the brachial plexus outside of the standard scanning planes makes it difficult to access this region. METHODS: On the basis of the Visible Human Project of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), …

Prevalence and anatomy of the anomalous subclavius posticus muscle and its clinical implications with emphasis in neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome: Scoping review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The subclavius muscle runs underneath the clavicle. However, there have been a few reports of a duplicated subclavius muscle which is commonly referred to as subclavius posticus muscle due to its orientation being posterior to the proper subclavius muscle. Its occurrence seems to potentially create a narrowing interval at the superior thoracic aperture as it crosses over the brachial plexus. It might also have functional influence on the shoulder girdle. PURPOSE: To provide comprehensive gross anatomy description of the variant "subclavius posticus muscle" and to investigate its r…

Anatomy informs geology: Hydrodynamic dispersal of alligator bones, with implications for taphonomic interpretations of fossil deposits of crocodylians, dinosaurs, and other morphologically novel taxa.

Distinctive anatomical features of bones can influence not only how these structures perform in living animals but also the tendency of elements to be transported by flowing water after death. Such transport can be critical in the concentration of fossils from animals that live near freshwater habitats, providing important context for interpreting the composition of paleocommunities. Measurements of the tendency of flowing water to disperse skeletal elements have been collected for diverse taxa, including mammals, turtles, and birds. However, these extant models may not be entirely appropriate

The self-assessment of genital anatomy, sexual function, and genital sensation (SAGASF-M) questionnaire in a Belgian Dutch-speaking male population: A validating study.

INTRODUCTION: Penile and genital surgery for congenital or acquired conditions is daily practice in reconstructive urology. These procedures, which carry the risk of disrupting nerves and blood vessels, may impair the genital sensation, and affect the capacity for sexual pleasure. Self-reported tools are needed to systematically assess the male genitalia before and after reconstructive surgeries in terms of genital sensation and sexual experience. AIM: This study validated the Dutch translation of the "self-assessment of genital anatomy and sexual functioning in male" (SAGASF-M) questionnaire…

Use of a Novel Septal Occluder Device for Left Atrial Appendage Closure in Patients With Postsurgical and Postlariat Leaks or Anatomies Unsuitable for Conventional Percutaneous Occlusion.

BACKGROUND: Interventional therapies aiming at excluding the left atrial appendage (LAA) from systemic circulation have been established as a valid alternative to oral anticoagulation in patients at high thromboembolic risk. However, their efficacy on stroke prophylaxis may be compromised owing to incomplete LAA closure. Additionally, the need for an alternative thromboembolic prevention may remain unmet in patients with contraindications to oral anticoagulation whose appendage anatomy is unsuitable for some conventional devices commercially available. We aimed at evaluating the feasibility of…
