NerveTracker: a Python-based software toolkit for visualizing and tracking groups of nerve fibers in serial block-face microscopy with ultraviolet surface excitation images.

SIGNIFICANCE: Information about the spatial organization of fibers within a nerve is crucial to our understanding of nerve anatomy and its response to neuromodulation therapies. A serial block-face microscopy method [three-dimensional microscopy with ultraviolet surface excitation (3D-MUSE)] has been developed to image nerves over extended depths ex vivo. To routinely visualize and track nerve fibers in these datasets, a dedicated and customizable software tool is required. AIM: Our objective was to develop custom software that includes image processing and visualization methods to perform mi

The CT derived angle between the transseptal puncture site and the left atrial appendage as a predictor for complex interventional occlusion procedures.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of the CT-derived angle between the intra-atrial septum (IAS) and the left atrial appendage (LAA) on procedural complexity and clinical outcomes in left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) procedures. BACKGROUND: Given the broad variations in anatomy, LAAO remains one of the most challenging interventional procedures in structural heart disease. In recent years, preprocedural cardiac tomography (CT) has evolved as a valuable tool; however, prediction of procedural complexity remains cumbersome. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 47 patients that underwent LAAO

High-resolution MR imaging with gadoxetate disodium for the comprehensive evaluation of potential living liver donors.

Several major transplantation centers have used composite multimodality evaluation for the preoperative evaluation of potential living liver donors. This approach can be time-consuming and, although rare, can cause complications. We aimed to demonstrate the clinical feasibility of our comprehensive preoperative MR protocol for the preoperative assessment of living liver donor candidates instead of composite multimodality evaluation. Thirty-five consecutive living liver donor candidates underwent multiphasic liver CT and comprehensive donor protocol MR examinations for preoperative evaluation i

Routine follow-up transjugular liver biopsy in Fontan patients: technical considerations and safety of an initial case series and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with Fontan palliation are susceptible to congestive hepatopathy and Fontan-associated liver disease (FALD) because of hemodynamic changes. The staging of liver fibrosis involves various methods, including invasive biopsy. Transjugular liver biopsy (TJLB) offers a less invasive alternative, enhancing liver disease surveillance in routine cardiac catheterization. We detail the technical aspects, share initial outcomes, and discuss existing literature. METHODS/RESULTS: During routine follow-up cardiac catheterization indicated by hemodynamic or clinical alterations, four

Risk factors for blunt cerebrovascular injury in the pediatric patient: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: While blunt cerebrovascular injury (BCVI) is a rare complication of blunt trauma, it is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. In the pediatric population, unique anatomy and development require screening criteria that accurately diagnose these injuries while limiting unwarranted radiation. METHODS: We searched Medline OVID, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases for studies that investigated the risk factors of BCVI in individuals younger than 18 years of age. We adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items in Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and

Fracture pattern and risk factors for reoperation after treatment of 156 periprosthetic fractures around an anatomic cemented hip stem.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The Lubinus SP2 stem has been associated with a very low risk of periprosthetic femoral fractures (PPFFs). We aimed, primarily, to study the radiographic morphology of PPFFs close to a Lubinus SP2 stem. Secondarily, we analyzed whether higher reoperation rate was correlated to the revision method chosen or to the characteristics of the fracture and of the bone. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included 156 femoral fractures close to a Lubinus cemented stem. These fractures were treated in 40 hospitals in Sweden between 2006 and 2011 and were followed up until 2019. Data

A Three-Dimensional Printable Hydrogel Formulation for the Local Delivery of Therapeutic Nanoparticles to Cervical Cancer.

Cervical cancer is the fourth most common malignancy among women. Compared to other types of cancer, therapeutic agents can be administrated locally at the mucosal vaginal membrane. Thermosensitive gels have been developed over the years for contraception or for the treatment of bacterial, fungal, and sexually transmitted infections. These formulations often carry therapeutic nanoparticles and are now being considered in the arsenal of tools for oncology. They can also be three-dimensionally (3D) printed for a better geometrical adjustment to the anatomy of the patient, thus enhancing the loca

Cascaded neural network-based CT image processing for aortic root analysis.

PURPOSE: Careful assessment of the aortic root is paramount to select an appropriate prosthesis for transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). Relevant information about the aortic root anatomy, such as the aortic annulus diameter, can be extracted from pre-interventional CT. In this work, we investigate a neural network-based approach for segmenting the aortic root as a basis for obtaining these parameters. METHODS: To support valve prosthesis selection, geometric measures of the aortic root are extracted from the patient's CT scan using a cascade of convolutional neural networks (CNNs)

Inter-individual variability in current direction for common tDCS montages.

The direction of applied electric current relative to the cortical surface is a key determinant of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) effects. Inter-individual differences in anatomy affect the consistency of current direction at a cortical target. However, the degree of this variability remains undetermined. Using current flow modelling (CFM), we quantified the inter-individual variability in tDCS current direction at a cortical target (left primary motor cortex, M1). Three montages targeting M1 using circular electrodes were compared: PA-tDCS directed current perpendicular to the

The "Primitive Brain Dysfunction" Theory of Autism: The Superior Colliculus Role.

A better understanding of the pathogenesis of autism will help clarify our conception of the complexity of normal brain development. The crucial deficit may lie in the postnatal changes that vision produces in the brainstem nuclei during early life. The superior colliculus is the primary brainstem visual center. Although difficult to examine in humans with present techniques, it is known to support behaviors essential for every vertebrate to survive, such as the ability to pay attention to relevant stimuli and to produce automatic motor responses based on sensory input. From birth to death, it

Combined assessment of stress cardiovascular magnetic resonance and angiography to predict the effect of revascularization in chronic coronary syndrome patients.

AIMS: The role of revascularization in chronic coronary syndrome (CCS) and the value of ischaemia vs. anatomy to guide decision-making are in constant debate. We explored the potential of a combined assessment of ischaemic burden by vasodilator stress cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) and presence of multivessel disease by angiography to predict the effect of revascularization on all-cause mortality in CCS. METHODS AND RESULTS: The study group comprised 1066 CCS patients submitted to vasodilator stress CMR pre-cardiac catheterization (mean age 66 ± 11 years, 69% male). Stress CMR-derive

A Novel Eye Drop Formulation for Potential Treatment of Neovascular Age-Related Macular Degeneration.

PURPOSE: Drug delivery to posterior ocular tissues via topical eye drop administration is arduous due to the unique anatomy and physiology of the eye. Therefore, treatments for posterior eye disease have to be administered via intravitreal injection or systemic route, both of which have their drawbacks. Herein, the objective of this work was to demonstrate that a specially designed eye drop formulation could effectively deliver small-molecule vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitor to posterior ocular tissues for antiangiogenic therapy. METHODS: The unique eye drop formulation, te
