For observing chronological changes of biochemical and pathological aspects in experimental cerebrocortical necrosis, 14 sheep were given amprolium (600 mg/kg/day), and killed at various clinical stages. At the onset of abnormal electroencephalograms, total thiamine concentrations in the cerebrum, liver, heart and blood were reduced significantly. After anorexia was noted, total thiamine concentrations in them did not decrease further as symptoms developed severely. In this study, experimental allergic uveitis (EAU) in guinea pigs was induced by an injection of bovine serum albumin (BSA) into the vitreous after having pre-immunized them intradermally with BSA plus incomplete Freund adjuvant, and the effect of superoxide dismutase (SOD) on EAU was observed. Ceftriaxone (rocefin), a 3rd generation cephalosporin with prolonged action, was highly efficient (ED50 0.12 to 0.38 mg/mouse) against experimental plague in albino mice infected either by Fra+ or Fra- strains of the plague microbe. The daily doses of the antibiotic (0.5-1.0-2.0 mg/mouse) provided 85-100 per cent survival of the animals. All the strains (15) of the plague microbe isolated from different natural foci and different objects were highly sensitive to ceftriaxone. The MIC was 0.02 to 0.05 microgram/ml.

The authors studied the effect of polypeptides, which were obtained from the prostate of cattle and were related to the class of cytomedines, on the formation of thrombi in the venules of the mesentery in rats. The therapeutic efficacy of ribamydil and virasol was evaluated in experimental Lassa fever in monkeys which received these drugs at various intervals after the onset of the clinical illness. Ribamydil or virasol administered in the first day of fever protected from death 60% to 66% of the infected animals, but when the drugs were given 2 days after the onset of fever the number of survivors declined to 0.20%. When the treatment was started 4 days after the onset of fever none of the drugs prevented deaths of Lassa virus-infected baboons.

The distribution of Taenia saginata cysts was recorded in 23 experimentally infected calves. The calves harboured between two and 2569 cysts. A median of 15.7 per cent of the cysts were located in the heart and 6.5 per cent in the masseter muscles, the organs usually considered as the most important predilection sites. Experimental evidence suggests that altered muscular function can influence craniofacial morphology. The switch from a nasal to an oronasal breathing pattern induces functional adaptations that include an increase in total anterior face height and vertical development of the lower anterior face. While some animals studies have suggested predictable growth patterns may occur, studies in human subjects have been much more controversial. Therefore, individual variations in response should be expected from the alteration of a long face syndrome patient's breathing mode.

Thirty-two patients with a mononeuropathy multiplex associated with a systemic necrotizing vasculitis were studied. The main abnormality was a loss of motor and sensory axons confirmed by electrophysiological and histological methods. We describe the serial ultrastructural pathology of experimental Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in mice. The incidence of fascioliasis was studied in Asela, Awasa, Debre Zeit and Debre Berhan by using 153 experimental sheep divided up into 4 groups designated tracer sheep, Controls I, II and III. Fasciola hepatica was encountered in Debre Berhan, Asela and Awasa, but it was not detected at Debre Zeit. In all areas, it was most frequently recovered after heavy rains. Altitude, soil type, salt content and local crowding of animals in watering sites appear to have influenced the varying degrees of incidence and intensity of infection.

The antibody response of pigs following experimental infection with Leptospira interrogans serovar pomona was examined using enzyme immunoassay (EIA) and the microscopic agglutination test (MAT). Leptospires elicited the production of both IgM and IgG classes of antibody, with IgG levels persisting for much longer than IgM. The efficacy of erythromycin, gentamicin and rifampicin has been compared in the treatment of experimental airborne Legionnaires' disease in guinea-pigs. Evaluation was based on survival of animals after 1LD50 or 10LD50 infection, on numbers of Legionella pneumophila in the lungs and on the extent of histopathological lesions.
