We outline a new synthetic method to prepare mono- and polyfluoroepoxides from a diverse pool of electrophiles (ketones, acyl chlorides, esters) and fluoroalkyl anion equivalents. The initially formed α-fluoro alkoxides undergo subsequent intramolecular ring closure when heated. We demonstrated the versatility of the method through the isolation of 16 mono- and polyfluoroepoxide products. A series of 3-aryl-2H-benzo[1,4]oxazin-4-oxides was prepared, and their ability to trap free radicals was investigated by EPR spectroscopy. A method for a photochemically induced mineralization of CCl4 is described in which use is made of reductive radicals. The UVC-photolysis (254 nm) of H2O2 added to aqueous solutions of CCl4 is leading to the homolysis of the oxidant yielding hydroxyl radicals (HO) that subsequently react with added methanol to generate hydroxymethyl radicals (CH2OH). The latter radicals initiate mineralization of CCl4 by reductive C-Cl bond splitting. CHCl3, C2Cl4 and C2Cl6 were found as reaction intermediates, but are quantitatively depleted in a parallel oxidative reaction manifold leading to mineralization.

Spider silk is spun in a complex and unique process, thought to depend on a hydrophobic conversion of a predominantly disordered to a beta-sheet rich protein structures. To test this hypothesis we monitored the effect of cationic (DOTAC) and anionic (alkyl sulfate) detergents and of (ii) solvent polarity using a series of alcohols on the secondary structure transition in dilute solutions of native spidroin. This paper presents cytotoxicity data of selected imidazolium ionic liquids evaluated in vitro on the human tumor cell line HeLa. It was found that for 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium entities the toxicity depends strongly on the associated anion; EC50 values are lowest for tetrafluoroborate. No direct dependence of the reduced effect concentration was found on elongating the short, methyl chain to ethyl or n-hexyl.
