Tuberculosis (TB) is a contagious infectious disease caused by the bacillus Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). It is transmitted through small particles in the air (<5 µm) expelled by active tuberculosis patients; when inhaled by a new host, they can potentially cause infection. Nowadays, TB is still the major cause of morbidity and mortality by a single infectious agent, this is further exacerbated by the worldwide emergence of multidrug-resistant strains of Mtb. Thus, effective methods of diagnosis, prophylaxis, and new pharmacological therapies must be carried out in order to control this di

Doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis (Doxy-PEP) reduces bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) but may select for tetracycline resistance in Neisseria gonorrhoeae and co-resistance to other antibiotics, including ceftriaxone.. The implementation of doxy-PEP should be accompanied by monitoring doxycycline resistance, but the optimal strategy to detect changes in the prevalence of resistance has not been established. We used a deterministic compartmental model of gonorrhea transmission to evaluate the performance of two strategies in providing early warning signals for rising resistan

Erythema multiforme (EM) is an immune-mediated condition that classically presents with discrete targetoid lesions and can involve both mucosal and cutaneous sites. While EM is typically preceded by viral infections, most notably herpes simplex virus (HSV), and certain medications, a large portion of cases are due to an unidentifiable cause. EM can be confused with other more serious conditions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS); however, clinical research has provided significant evidence to classify EM and SJS as separate disorders. Treatment of EM is highly variable, depending on the etiol

PURPOSE: Bilateral acute iris depigmentation (BADI) and transillumination (BATI) syndromes have been linked with the use of antibiotics, especially fluoroquinolones. They are characterized by acute onset of pigment dispersion in the anterior chamber, depigmentation of the iris and pigment deposition in the angle and in the posterior surface of the cornea (BADI), with iris transillumination defects and atonic pupil with sphincter paralysis (BATI). The purpose of this paper is to report the development of clinical depigmentation and iris damage similar to BADI and BATI in patients who had underg

Hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) is a critical treatment of patients with high-risk hematopoietic malignancies, hematological deficiencies, and other immune diseases. In allogeneic HCT (allo-HCT), donor-derived T cells recognize host tissues as foreign, causing graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) which is a main contributor to morbidity and mortality. The intestine is one of the organs most severely affected by GVHD and research has recently highlighted the importance of bacteria, particularly the gut microbiota, in HCT outcome and in GVHD development. Loss of intestinal bacterial diversi

OBJECTIVE: To offer a set of useful recommendations for urologists who are starting to provide treatment of overactive bladders with onabotu … s catheterization before the treatment is conducted. Patients must also be informed of the need for antibiotic prophylaxis to reduce the risk of urinary tract infections. At least 2 follow-up visits are recommended: the first at days 7-14 after the injection and the second at 2-3 months. Reinjection is indicated when the effect of the treatment decreases.

Invasive candidiasis is associated with high mortality rates, ranging from 35% to 60%, in the range reported for septic shock. The epidemiology and pathogenesis of invasive candidiasis differ according to the patient's immune status; the majority of cases in immunocompromised hosts are candidaemia, whereas non-candidaemic systemic candidiasis accounts for the majority of cases in critically ill patients. In contrast to candidaemia, non-candidaemic systemic candidiasis is difficult to prove, especially in critically ill patients. Up to 80% of these patients are colonized, but only 5-30% develop

Despite group B streptococcal (GBS) screening in late pregnancy and intrapartum antimicrobial prophylaxis, early-onset sepsis in neonates remains a common source of neonatal morbidity and mortality especially in preterm neonates. The identification of neonates with early-onset sepsis is usually based on perinatal risk factors. Clinical signs are aspecific and laboratory tests are not sensitive. Therefore, many clinicians will overtreat at-risk infants. Inappropriate treatment with antibiotics increases the risk for late-onset sepsis, necrotizing enterocolitis, mortality, and prolongs hospitali

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is an RNA virus that causes respiratory tract infections in children. In the North- ern Hemisphere, the peak infection season is November through April. By two years of age, most children will have had an RSV infection. Bronchiolitis, a lower respiratory tract infection, is often caused by RSV. An RSV infection is diagnosed based on patient history and physical examination. Children typically present with cough, coryza, and wheezing. Laboratory testing and chest radiography are not necessary to make the diagnosis. Serious concur- rent bacterial infections are

Most patients with acute suppurative meningitis are otherwise healthy individuals with regard to immune mechanisms against invasive bacterial disease. This medical emergency is among the most dramatic and potentially ravaging diseases that affect humans, particularly young children. The illness often strikes suddenly, and can either result in death or leave the survivors with significant neurological dysfunctions. The demonstration of a bacterial aetiology is necessary for decisions regarding treatment and prophylaxis. Conventional bacteriological methods frequently fail to identify an agent,

A case of adenosine deaminase (ADA) deficiency is described briefly. The clinical characteristics, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management of this disease are discussed, followed by clinical pearls and pitfalls. ADA deficiency was identified in 1972 as a cause of severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) and its incidence is approximately 1/10(6). This defect accounts for approximately 17% of all SCIDs and 50% of all autosomal recessive SCIDs. The patients typically have impaired immune function with recurrent severe infections, diarrhea, and failure to thrive. Because death occurs within a few

BACKGROUND: Systemic administration of antibiotics or selective decontamination is frequently used in the prophylaxis and treatment of infections originating from the gastrointestinal flora. In this study, we wanted to compare the protective effect of enteral administration of lactobacilli to gentamicin against severe intra-abdominal infection.
METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats underwent cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). Rats were pretreated with saline, Lactobacillus R2LC, and gentamicin. Bacterial growth and endotoxin levels in the blood, reticuloendothelial system (RES)-function, and inte

The impact of the three historic plague pandemics will remain engraved forever in the collective memory. During the first half of the XXth century, the development of vaccines inducing protection against bubonic plague, the first production of antibiotics, insecticides and raticides, could have lead some people to think that eradication was possible. But according to the data of epidemiological surveillance, far from disappearing, plague is remaining or so increasing that it is considered, in some places, as a reemerging disease. Yersinia pestis is highly variable, and a multidrug resistant st

While salmonellas can cause disease problems among poultry, they remain essentially a concern for public health, as a cause of outbreaks of food poisoning. The principal site of multiplication of these bacteria is the digestive tract, particularly the caecum, which may result in widespread contamination of the environment. The pathogenicity of salmonellas depends on the invasive properties and the ability of the bacteria to survive and multiply within cells, particularly macrophages. These properties are the source of vertical transmission which, in the case of survival of the embryo, can resu

The suppression of pathogenic aerobes and the preservation of anaerobes provides a degree of infection prevention during granulocytopenia. Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (TMP/SMZ) suppresses Enterobacteriaceae and probably maintains colonization resistance through sparing of anaerobes. TMP/SMZ (320/1600 mg/day) treatment was compared to placebo in a double-blind, randomized trial in patients with newly diagnosed small cell carcinoma of the lung during the initial courses of chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, and etoposide. Infections were evaluated as microbiologically documented,
