Invasive Klebsiella Syndrome With Multiple Liver and Renal Abscesses.

Invasive Klebsiella syndrome (IKS) is a significant health concern, particularly in Asia, as it results in a high mortality rate. Due to the hypervirulent strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae, it is more frequently detected among immunosuppressed individuals and will mainly metastasize to different organs, including the liver, kidneys, eyes, and brain. Here, we present the case of a 70-year-old man with underlying diabetes mellitus who developed multiple organ abscesses secondary to K. pneumoniae, requiring prolonged antibiotic treatment and abscess drainage. This case report highlights the import

Other clinical uses for apomorphine: Sedation and sleep disorders, withdrawal of oral dopaminergic medication, palliative care, restless legs syndrome, traumatic brain injury, sexual dysfunction.

Apomorphine is now recognised as the oldest antiparkinsonian drug on the market. Though still underused, it is increasingly prescribed for patients with advanced Parkinson's disease (PD) with motor fluctuations in Europe, Asia and more recently on the other three continents. In light of its most recent uses and newest challenges, this paper focuses on a number of indications in Parkinson's disease and beyond, which are currently under development or which would benefit from development, given the generally high levels of evidence: sedation and sleep disorders, withdrawal of oral dopaminergic m

Pediatric Severe Febrile Thrombocytopenia Syndrome: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Severe febrile thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is a tick-borne infectious disease that is endemic in parts of eastern Asia. Few pediatric cases have been reported. We describe a case of SFTS in a seven-year-old girl who presented with prolonged fever and gastrointestinal symptoms. Leukopenia and thrombocytopenia on hematology, and a history of outdoor activity led us to diagnose SFTS, although the patient had no tick bite marks. We also review the literature and discuss the characteristics of pediatric SFTS. Physicians should consider SFTS in the differential diagnosis of fever with thrombocy

[Resurgence of Mycoplasma pneumoniae: a new epidemic ?].

Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia occurs periodically in an endemic-epidemic pattern. The incidence of this disease has fallen drastically as a result of the health measures imposed for the COVID-19 pandemic. In Switzerland, as elsewhere in the world, a new epidemic has been affecting pediatrics and adult populations since September 2023. Transmitted by aerosols and requiring close contact, this bacterium causes respiratory infections of varying severity, as well as a variety of extra-pulmonary manifestations. Microbiological diagnosis is based on PCR of respiratory samples. Despite a very high

[The Soviet-Chinese cooperation in production of penicillin in the 1950s].

The article considers, on the basis of analysis of archival documents, issue of Soviet-Chinese cooperation in field of production of penicillin in the 1950s. The main attention is paid to history of construction of penicillin plant in Shijiazhuang. It is demonstrated that it was carried out on preferential terms for China and it was under special control of the USSR government. The building of plant was bound by great difficulties conditioned by range of project, specifics of production conditions in China, special requests of customer, necessity to manufacture non-standard equipment. The impl

[Advances in Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Treatment: Induction Chemotherapy and Concomitant Radio-Chemotherapy].

Squamous cell carcinoma of the nasopharynx is responsible for 0.7% of all malignant tumors worldwide, with the highest incidence in the population of southern China and Southeast Asia. The standard treatment for locally advanced disease consists of a combination of radiotherapy and chemotherapy in different schedules. Among them, induction chemotherapy followed by concomitant radio-chemotherapy has shown in recent years to be a standard therapeutic option with high rates of locoregional control and overall survival. This paper aims to review the current evidence related to treatment with induc

Paediatric melioidosis.

Melioidosis is a tropical infectious disease caused by the saprophytic gram-negative bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei. Despite the infection being endemic in southeast Asia and northern Australia, the broad clinical presentations and diagnostic difficulties limit its early detection, particularly in children. Melioidosis more commonly affects the immunocompromised and adults. Melioidosis is increasingly being diagnosed around the world and whole-genome sequencing indicates that these cases are not linked with travel to endemic areas. Research has concentrated on the adult population with li

Acute kidney injury associated with dengue virus infection: a review.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is one of the least studied complications of dengue, but it carries high mortality rates and prolonged hospital stay. Due to the severity of this complication, the risk of developing chronic kidney disease (CKD) and the increasing number of dengue cases reported worldwide, particularly in the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Southeast Asia and South America, including Brazil, we embarked on this narrative review, aimed to update the epidemiology of AKI associated with dengue, elucidate the main pathophysiological mechanisms of AKI caused by the dengue virus

Understanding the Pathophysiology of Exosomes in Schistosomiasis: A New Direction for Disease Control and Prevention.

Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease endemic to freshwater areas of Southeast Asia, Africa, and South America that is capable of causing serious damage to the internal organs. Recent studies have linked exosomes to the progression of schistosomiasis. These structures are important mediators for intercellular communication, assist cells to exchange proteins, lipids, and genetic material and have been shown to play critical roles during host-parasite interactions. This review aims to discuss the pathophysiology of exosomes in schistosomiasis and their roles in regulating the host immune respon

Susceptibility of Tick-Borne Encephalitis Virus to Inactivation by Heat, Acidic pH, Chemical, or UV Treatment.

Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is a single-stranded, positive-sense RNA virus in the family Flaviviridae that is endemic in parts of Europe and Asia and can cause meningitis or encephalitis. Due to the disease severity, TBEV requires handling under heightened biosafety measures. The establishment and validation of inactivation procedures is a prerequisite for downstream analyses and management of occupational exposure. Therefore, different procedures for TBEV inactivation were tested. Our results suggest that TBEV is susceptible to inactivation by heat, acidic pH, different concentration

Lengthening of the Asian Nose.

The Asian nose has its unique morphology and forms a significant proportion of noses treated by the rhinoplasty surgeon not only in Asia but also in other countries where the Asian diaspora resides. The anatomical features and dimensions of the Asian nose differ from noses of persons of African, Caucasian, Indian, and Middle Eastern origins, poses its own challenges, and warrants a unique set of techniques for its aesthetic improvement. In this article, we present an overview of the approach to the lengthening of the Asian nose, drawing from our own experience with managing the Asian nose and

Druggable targets from coronaviruses for designing new antiviral drugs.

Severe respiratory infections were highlighted in the SARS-CoV outbreak in 2002, as well as MERS-CoV, in 2012. Recently, the novel CoV (COVID-19) has led to severe respiratory damage to humans and deaths in Asia, Europe, and Americas, which allowed the WHO to declare the pandemic state. Notwithstanding all impacts caused by Coronaviruses, it is evident that the development of new antiviral agents is an unmet need. In this review, we provide a complete compilation of all potential antiviral agents targeting macromolecular structures from these Coronaviruses (Coronaviridae), providing a medicina

A New Species of Sucking Louse from the Mandrill from Gabon with a Review of Host Associations and Geographical Distributions, and Identification Keys to Members of the Genus pedicinus (Phthiraptera: Anoplura: Pedicinidae).

Members of the sucking louse genus Pedicinus are ectoparasites of cercopithecid primates in Africa, Asia, and Gibraltar. Pedicinus gabonensis n. sp. is described on the basis of adult male and female specimens collected from the mandrill (Mandrillus sphinx) in Gabon. The new species is compared morphologically with other members of the genus Pedicinus, and a nuclear elongation factor 1 alpha gene sequence is provided. Host associations and geographical distributions of the 18 previously recognized species of the genus and of P. gabonensis n. sp. are reviewed. Updated identification keys are pr

Gnathostomiasis acquired after consumption of raw freshwater fish in the Amazon region: a report of two cases in Brazil.

Gnathostomiasis is a parasitic zoonosis caused by the helminth Gnathostoma spp., acquired through the consumption of raw or undercooked contaminated aquatic animals. The disease is endemic in Southeast Asia and Central America. Two male patients, both middle-aged, presented with single itchy erythemato-edematous plaques on the anterior thorax and left flank. Both had consumed raw fish in the Amazon region. The clinical and epidemiological examinations suggested gnathostomiasis, and treatment with albendazole caused total regression of the lesions. Health teams should be familiar with the diseas

Bilateral total deafness after preparation of wild boar meat.

INTRODUCTION: Streptococcus suis is responsible for a zoonosis for which Suidae (pigs and wild boars) constitute the reservoir, mainly in Asia, with a much lower prevalence in Europe. The predominant clinical manifestation is meningitis, possibly resulting in deafness. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a woman hospitalised for meningitis complicated by labyrinthitis, occurring several hours after preparing a meal composed of wild boar meat. Despite the presence of intracochlear fibrosis, the patient was managed by sequential bilateral cochlear implants. DISCUSSION: The discussion presents a

Food-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis.

Food-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis (FDEIAn), first reported in 1979, is a condition defined by the consumption of a trigger food with temporally related exercise that results in an immediate hypersensitivity (type 1) reaction in the setting of the trigger food being tolerated independent of exercise and exercise being tolerated in the absence of trigger food consumption. The most common trigger food in the west is wheat and shellfish in Asia. The exact mechanism of FDEIAn is unknown, though several hypotheses exist. Cofactors such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug use, alcohol c

Routine and Advanced Ultrasound of Major Salivary Glands.

Ultrasound is the preferred initial imaging modality in Europe and Asia for assessing the major salivary glands. In experienced hands, it is sensitive for a range of salivary pathologies, often diagnostic, and also a safe, cost-effective gatekeeper for further investigations as well as image-guided diagnostic biopsies and aspirations. This article reviews the scanning technique and normal sonographic anatomy of major salivary glands and overviews typical sonographic appearances of salivary pathologies, including infective and inflammatory conditions, sialolithiasis, and neoplasms. Limitations

Melioidosis: the great mimicker.

Melioidosis is an infectious disease endemic in Northern Australia and South East Asia. It is associated with high degrees of morbidity and mortality. On average, around five cases are diagnosed annually in the USA. Diagnosis remains a challenge, as it mimics many other conditions, especially tuberculosis, hence its other name, the 'great mimicker.' The present case involves a recent traveler to the Philippines, who presented with episodic fevers and weight loss to his primary care physician. Blood cultures ordered grew Burkholderia pseudomallei. Primary care physicians should suspect melioido

Chikungunya in the Americas: Recommendations and Conclusions.

Discovered in 1953, chikungunya virus (CHIKV) circulated in Africa and Southeast Asia, with periodic outbreaks, for many years. Highly efficient transmission following a genetic mutation of the virus in 2005 caused its global spread. Associated with significant morbidity, CHIKV creates a large public health burden, and despite various efforts, there are currently no licensed vaccines nor specific treatments. To garner a better understanding of the virus, identify gaps in knowledge, and guide the development of more-effective interventions, the World Health Organization and National Institute o
