Barriers to care for mental health conditions in Canada.

There are growing concerns in Canada about access barriers to quality mental health care, which has worsened significantly by the COVID-19 pandemic and for some Canadians more than others. With a nationally representative sample of 1501 adults, surveyed by the Angus Reid Institute, this study examined the mental health conditions Canadians experience the most difficulties in accessing care. Among half of the respondents who sought mental health care, the majority encountered challenges in accessing help for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (34%) and depression (33%). When examining the dat

Prepulse inhibition in psychiatric disorders--apart from schizophrenia.

Prepulse inhibition (PPI) is a robust operational measure of sensorimotor gating. In schizophrenic patients PPI is deficient. The aim of our review was to investigate the state of science regarding PPI and psychiatric disorders aside from schizophrenia. We used the online database PubMed in order to search for original published reports on PPI studies. The terms "prepulse inhibition", "sensorimotor gating", "blink recovery", and "blink reflex excitability" have been combined with the names of psychiatric disorders. We found that PPI is deficient in obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and Gille

A pilot controlled family study of DSM-III-R and DSM-IV ADHD in African-American children.

BACKGROUND: Very little is known about attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in African-American children, and although the familial transmission of ADHD has been well established in white samples, prior work has not evaluated this feature of ADHD in African-American families. METHOD: Subjects were 37 first-degree relatives of children with DSM-III-R-defined ADHD and 52 first-degree relatives of non-ADHD comparison children matched for ethnicity, age, and gender. DSM-III-R-based structured interviews (modified to include DSM-IV diagnoses) provided the basis for psychiatric diagnoses

Predictors of Response to Behavioral Treatments Among Children With ADHD-Inattentive Type.

The goal of the study was to examine baseline characteristics-child gender, IQ, age, internalizing problems, symptoms of hyperactivity/impulsivity (HI), oppositional defiant disorder, and sluggish cognitive tempo, and parent income, education, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) severity, and anxiety/depression (A/D)-associated with response to behavioral treatments for ADHD, predominantly inattentive type. We employed data from 148 children (M = 8.7 years), 58% male, and 57% Caucasian in a randomized clinical trial. Positive treatment response was defined as (a) 5 or fewer inatten

Fish oil-derived fatty acids during pregnancy and risk of neurodevelopmental disorders in children at age 10 - A randomized controlled trial.

Fish oil-derived omega-3 fatty acids (ꙍ-3 FA), particularly docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), are critical for early brain development, but evidence of causal effects from supplementation during pregnancy is limited. In the prospective COPSAC2010 cohort of 700 mother-child pairs, we investigated whether i) maternal DHA + EPA blood concentrations in mid-pregnancy and ii) fish oil supplementation in a randomized trial in late pregnancy influence neurodevelopmental outcomes at age 10. Maternal blood DHA + EPA concentrations were measured at 24 weeks gestation, followed b

Writing hand preference and child mental health in the general population: Findings from the Millennium Cohort Study.

Non-right-handed individuals appear to face greater risks for some psychiatric disorders than those right-handed. Whether an analogous association exists in the general child population and for whom (non-right-handed, left-handed, or mixed-handed children) is unclear. To fill these gaps, we used data from 7,951 children (49.48% girls) of the UK's Millennium Cohort Study. The parent-reported Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) subscales measured mental health difficulties: emotional, conduct, hyperactivity/inattention, peer difficulties, and prosocial behaviour, at ages 3, 5, 7, 11,

Contribution of an Ambidirectional Cohort Study on the Epidemiology of 186 Autism Spectrum Disorder Cases in an Algerian Population.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects more than 80,000 children under the age of 18 in Algeria, making it a major public health problem. It is characterized by communication abnormalities, restricted and stereotyped behaviours and resistance to change. To date, scientific publications on autism in Algeria are very rare. This study proposes to report the clinical and paraclinical profiles of ASD children or young adults in an Algerian population, as well as the prenatal, perinatal and postnatal factors associated with ASD. We conducted an ambidirectional cohort study (retrospective and prospec

Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) and the Developing Brain.

Paracetamol is commonly used to treat fever and pain in pregnant women, but there are growing concerns that this may cause attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and autism spectrum disorder in the offspring. A growing number of epidemiological studies suggests that relative risks for these disorders increase by an average of about 25% following intrauterine paracetamol exposure. The data analyzed point to a dose-effect relationship but cannot fully account for unmeasured confounders, notably indication and genetic transmission. Only few experimental investigations have addressed this issue.

ADHD: a hidden comorbidity in adult psychiatric patients.

Adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (aADHD) has recently been better recognized and treated in many European countries. In spite of this development, aADHD still features as a "hidden" comorbidity, often not diagnosed even in patients under psychiatric treatment for other psychiatric disorders. The aim of this study was to establish the prevalence rates of unrecognized aADHD in academic centers providing regular psychiatric services in the Czech Republic and Hungary. In a population of psychiatric in-and outpatients, Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale was administered. All positively and

Pharmacoepidemiology of Tourette and Chronic Tic Disorders in Sweden 2005-2013.

BACKGROUND: Monitoring "real world" dispensation patterns over time is important to build the evidence base for safe and efficient use of psychotropic drugs. In this study, we aimed to comprehensively examine the patterns of psychotropic drug dispensations in patients with Tourette and chronic tic disorders (TD/CTD) in Sweden between 2005 and 2013. METHODS: A cohort of 6979 TD/CTD patients was identified through the Swedish National Patient Register. Their drug dispensation patterns, collected in the Swedish Prescribed Drug Register, were examined between July 1, 2005 and December 31, 2013. F

Infant acetylcholine, dopamine, and melatonin dysregulation: Neonatal biomarkers and causal factors for ASD and ADHD phenotypes.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and ADHD are common neurodevelopmental disorders that benefit from early intervention but currently suffer from late detection and diagnosis: neurochemical dysregulations are extant already at birth but clinical phenotypes are not distinguishable until preschool age or later. The vast heterogeneity between subjects' phenotypes relates to interaction between multiple unknown factors, making research on factor causality insurmountable. To unlock this situation we pose the hypothesis that atypical pupillary light responses from rods, cones, and the recently discove

Language Difficulty at School Entry and the Trajectories of Hyperactivity-Inattention Problems from Ages 4 to 11: Evidence from a Population-Representative Cohort Study.

Latent growth curve modelling was used to contrast the developmental trajectories of hyperactivity-inattention (H-I) problems across childhood for children with a language difficulty at the start of school and those with typical language and to examine if the presence of a language difficulty moderates the associations of child, parent and peer predictors with these trajectories. Unconditional and language-status conditional latent growth curves of H-I problems were estimated for a large nationally representative cohort of children, comprising 1627 boys (280 - language difficulty) and 1609 gir

Commonalities in EEG Spectral Power Abnormalities Between Women With ADHD and Women With Bipolar Disorder During Rest and Cognitive Performance.

While attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and bipolar disorder (BD) denote distinct psychiatric conditions, diagnostic delineation is impeded by considerable symptomatic overlap. Direct comparisons across ADHD and BD on neurophysiological measures are limited. They could inform us on impairments that are specific to or shared between the disorders and, therefore, potential biomarkers that may aid in the identification of the diagnostic boundaries. Our aim was to test whether quantitative EEG (QEEG) identifies differences or similarities between women with ADHD and women with BD dur

Social Perspective Taking and Empathy in Children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders.

Children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) show sociobehavioral impairments; however, the social cognitive profile contributing to these impairments is poorly understood. This study compared social perspective taking and empathy in children with FASD versus typically developing controls (TDC). Thirty-seven children with FASD and 21 TDC participated. Measures included parent-rated CBCL and SSIS, and NEPSY-II Theory of Mind, Test of Social Cognition and Index of Empathy. Parents rated the FASD group higher than TDC on indices of behavior problems and lower on indices of social skills
