Indirect Associations of Anxiety Sensitivity with Tobacco, Alcohol, and Other Drug Use Problems Through Emotional Disorder Symptoms in Adolescents.

Theoretically, anxiety sensitivity-fear of anxiety symptoms-enhances perception of and emotional reactivity to autonomic arousal and mental distress, thereby increasing negative affect and motivation to use substances for negative reinforcement. Because no prior study of adolescents has tested if anxiety sensitivity is indirectly associated with substance use problems through symptoms of emotional disorders (i.e., disorders involving high levels of negative affect), the current cross-sectional study examined this theoretical pathway. Participants included ninth-grade students from 10 different

Alexithymia and Cardiac Outcome in Patients at First Acute Coronary Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: This cohort study was aimed to verify whether subjects at their first acute coronary syndrome (ACS) were more alexithymic than healthy controls (HC) and whether alexithymia can predispose patients with coronary artery disease to new major adverse cardiac events (MACE) during a 24-month follow-up period. METHODS: The sample included 100 HC with no history of depression or ACS and 304 never depressed patients with a first-ever ACS. A total of 266 patients completed the 2-year follow-up. RESULTS: Patients and HC reported similar Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) scores. During the

Physical Activity After Breast Cancer Surgery: Does Depression Make Exercise Feel More Effortful than It Actually Is?

BACKGROUND: Prior to treatment, breast cancer patients are less physically fit compared to peers; during cancer treatment, their fitness typically declines. Depressive symptoms are associated with reduced activity up to 5 years post-treatment, but research has not identified mechanisms linking depression and lower activity. The current study assessed relationships among breast cancer patients' depression and perceived exertion during exercise as well as heart rate, an objective indicator of exertion. METHODS: Participants were 106 breast cancer patients, stages I-IIIA, who completed surgery b

Moderators of Cognitive Therapy and Bright Light Therapy Effects on Depressive Symptoms in Patients with Breast Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive therapy (CT) and bright light therapy (BLT) have been found to be effective to treat depressive symptoms in breast cancer patients. No study has investigated the baseline patients' characteristics that are associated with better outcomes with CT vs. BLT in this population. This study aimed to assess, in breast cancer patients, the moderating role of eight clinical variables on the effects of CT and BLT on depressive symptoms. METHODS: This is a secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial conducted in 59 women who received an 8-week CT or BLT and completed questio

Coping with Medically Unexplained Physical Symptoms: the Role of Illness Beliefs and Behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Medically unexplained syndromes (MUS) are both prevalent and disabling. While illness beliefs and behaviors are thought to maintain MUS-related disability, little is known about which specific behavioral responses to MUS are related to disability or the way in which beliefs and behaviors interact to impact functioning. The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between illness beliefs and disability among patients with MUS, and assess the extent to which behaviors mediate this relationship. METHODS: The study examined data from the baseline assessment of a mu

Explaining the Immigrant Paradox: The Influence of Acculturation, Enculturation, and Acculturative Stress on Problematic Alcohol Consumption.

The present study explored the Immigrant Paradox (IP), generational differences in problematic alcohol use (alcohol consumption and alcohol-related consequences), among immigrants and US born groups from a number of ethnic minority backgrounds. Our approach separates group differences in problematic alcohol consumption in a counterfactual manner for immigrants and the US born to answer the following counterfactual question: "What would problematic alcohol use levels be for the US born had they been exposed to the alcohol use generation (or protective) processes of immigrants and vice versa?" A Pilot Study of Cancer 101 for Incarcerated Male Smokers.

Incarcerated men in the United States, an understudied population, have not been the focus of cancer prevention research. This pilot study explored the impact of Cancer 101 for imprisoned male smokers to increase cancer knowledge and promote cancer prevention activities in the prison population. Cancer 101 was pilot tested for adoption with representatives from the target audience in three prison facilities located in the northeastern region of the United States, and based on their feedback, modifications were implemented. Pretest and posttest surveys were used to assess knowledge of attitudes

"Like I Have No Choice": A Qualitative Exploration of HIV Diagnosis and Medical Care Experiences While Incarcerated and Their Effects.

It is estimated that one in six Black and Latino adult persons living with HIV (PLWH) spend time in correctional institutions each year. Yet after release, PLWH of color evidence poor HIV health outcomes across the HIV care continuum. This study, guided by an ecological approach and Critical Race Theory, sought to understand the lived experiences of socioeconomically disadvantaged PLWH of color who received an HIV diagnosis and/or medical care while incarcerated, and the ways in which those experiences influenced engagement in medical care after release. Drawn from a larger study in Brooklyn,

Community Violence Exposure, Sleep Disruption, and Insulin Resistance in Low-Income Urban Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to violence, which is experienced at disproportionally higher levels by black versus white youth, is associated with disruptions in sleep and elevated cardiovascular risk. Further, poor sleep hygiene is associated with insulin resistance. However, research to date examining disruptions in sleep and cardiovascular risk in African-American adolescents has not taken the impact of exposure to violence into account, nor considered how gender might affect patterns of association. The present study addressed this gap by testing a path model linking exposure to community violence,

Needle and Syringe Programs and HIV-Related Risk Behaviors Among Men Who Inject Drugs: A Multilevel Analysis of Two Cities in Iran.

BACKGROUND: Many studies have found significant differences in HIV risk at the community and socioeconomic levels. However, few have considered variations in needle and syringe program (Jin et al., Oral Dis. 1;22(7):609-19) coverage and other community characteristics on HIV risk behaviors among people who inject drugs (PWIDs). Our objective was to study the relationship between individual factors and city-level characteristics (such as the city's coverage of harm reduction programs) on HIV risk behavior among PWID residing in two cities in Iran. METHODS: The study was conducted from March to

A Comparison of Psychological Symptoms in Survivors of Sex and Labor Trafficking.

Human trafficking is a form of interpersonal trauma that has significant mental health impacts on survivors. This study examined psychological symptoms in 131 survivors of sex and labor trafficking, including people trafficked into or within the United States. High rates of depression (71%) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (61%) were identified. Two thirds of survivors also met criteria for multiple categories of Complex PTSD (C-PTSD), including affect dysregulation and impulsivity; alterations in attention and consciousness; changes in interpersonal relationships; revictimization; som

Committed Action, Disability and Perceived Health in Individuals with Fibromyalgia.

Committed action, one of the components of psychological flexibility, has been shown to be related with measures of pain-relevant function domains in patients with chronic pain. However, the associations between measures of committed action and of physical health and function in individuals with fibromyalgia (FM) have not yet been examined. The aim of the present cross-sectional study was to better understand the role that committed action plays in (1) pain-related disability and (2) mental and physical health in individuals with FM. One hundred twenty-nine adult females with a diagnosis of FM

Predictors of Daily Pain Medication Use in Individuals with Recurrent Back Pain.

PURPOSE: A key component to chronic pain management regimens is the use of analgesic medications. Psychological factors, such as mood states, may also affect the use of pain medications for individuals with chronic pain, but few observational studies have examined how these factors may predict pain medication use at the daily level. METHODS: Daily assessments from 104 individuals with back pain were used to examine fluctuations in daily pain intensity, mood, sleep quality, and physical activity as predictors of the likelihood of pain medication (opioid and non-opioid) use and levels of medica

Treatment Beliefs Underlying Intended Treatment Choices in Knee and Hip Osteoarthritis.

PURPOSE: Patients' beliefs about treatment modalities for knee and hip osteoarthritis (OA) will underlie their treatment choices. Based on the Theory of Planned Behavior, it is hypothesized that patients' beliefs, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control guide their treatment choices. Also, symptom severity and one's inherent tendency to approach or avoid situations are assumed to play a role. The objective of this study was to test whether these variables were associated with intended treatment choices in knee and hip OA. METHODS: Patients with knee and hip OA were randomly selected
