Effect of 3-mercaptopyruvate Sulfurtransferase Deficiency on the Development of Multiorgan Failure, Inflammation, and Wound Healing in Mice Subjected to Burn Injury.

The gaseous transmitter hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has been implicated in various forms of critical illness. Here, we have compared the outcome of scald burn injury in wild-type mice and in mice deficient in 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase (3-MST), a mammalian H2S-generating enzyme. Outcome variables included indices of organ injury, clinical chemistry parameters, and plasma levels of inflammatory mediators. Plasma levels of H2S significantly increased in response to burn in wild-type mice, but remained unchanged in 3-MST-/- mice. The capacity of tissue homogenates to produce H2S from 3-merca

Treating aplasia cutis congenita in a newborn with the combination of ionic silver dressing and moist exposed burn ointment: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Aplasia cutis congenita (ACC) in newborns is a condition in which congenital defects or hypoplasia is present in part of the epidermis, dermis and even subcutaneous tissue (including muscle and bones). First reported by Cordon in 1767, ACC is a rare disease with a low incidence of 1/100000 to 3/10000. Currently, there are 500 cases reported worldwide. ACC can be accompanied by other malformations. The onset mechanism of the disease remains unknown but is thought to be correlated to factors such as genetics, narrow uterus, foetal skin and amniotic membrane adhesion, use of teratogen

A Comparison of Contracture Severity at Acute Discharge in Patients With and Without Heterotopic Ossification: A Burn Model System National Database Study.

This study assesses the association between heterotopic ossification and upper extremity contracture by comparing goniometric measured active range of motion outcomes of patients with and without heterotopic ossification. Data were obtained from the Burn Model System National Database between 1994 and 2003 for patients more than 18 years with elbow contracture at acute discharge. Absolute losses in elbow range of motion were compared for those with and without radiologic evidence of heterotopic ossification (location undefined) and were further examined by burn size subgroups using Wilcoxon ra

Intraoperative Venovenous Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation as Rescue for a Patient With an Inhalational Burn and Iatrogenic Upper Airway Injury: A Case Report.

Venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO) is a well-established alternative oxygenation method for critically ill patients. A 58-year-old male was transferred to our level 1 trauma and burn center after sustaining an inhalational injury from a carburetor explosion, with subsequent iatrogenic tracheal injury and emergent cricothyrotomy before arrival. During attempted surgical airway stabilization, our ability to ventilate and oxygenate was compromised. Intraoperative VV-ECMO enabled rescue from severe hypoxemia and subsequent recovery without lasting neurologic sequelae. This ca

Single dose eradication of extensively drug resistant Acinetobacter spp. In a mouse model of burn infection by melittin antimicrobial peptide.

Bacterial infections caused by antibiotic resistant bacteria are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality after burn injuries. This issue has driven the need for promising antimicrobial drugs to eradication of bacterial pathogens. Accordingly, we aimed to determine the therapeutic value of melittin, as a natural Antimicrobial peptide (AMP), in eradication of extensively drug-resistant (XDR) Acinetobacter spp. on a mouse model of third degree burn infection. Melittin killed all examined XDR isolates at 4 μg/mL up to 3 h. Melittin caused significant fluorescence release from XDR isolates at

Bullous Pemphigoid Triggered by Thermal Burn Under Medication With a Dipeptidyl Peptidase-IV Inhibitor: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is a common autoimmune blistering disease in which autoantibodies mainly target the hemidesmosomal component BP180 (also known as type XVII collagen) in basal keratinocytes. Various triggering factors are known to induce BP onset, including radiotherapy, burns, ultraviolet exposure, surgery, and the use of dipeptidyl peptidase-IV inhibitors (DPP4i), which are widely used antihyperglycemic drugs. Here, we present a case of BP triggered by a thermal burn under medication with DPP4i. A 60-year-old man with type II diabetes had been treated with the DPP4i linagliptin for 1 …

[National experts consensus on application of pulse contour cardiac output monitoring technique in severe burn treatment (2018 version)].

As a newly developed technique for hemodynamic monitoring, pulse contour cardiac output (PiCCO) monitoring takes great advantages in guiding shock resuscitation and fluid administration. PiCCO has been used more and more in burn patients in recent years, however there is no clinic consensus on how to apply PiCCO monitoring, understand the significance of PiCCO monitored parameters, and guide the treatment using PiCCO monitored parameters in patients with severe burns. Based on the current literature and the experts' clinical experience, national experts consensus on application of pulse contou…

Narrow windrow burning canola (Brassica napus L.) residue for Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib.) de Bary sclerotia destruction.

BACKGROUND: Since the introduction of herbicide-tolerant varieties of canola (Brassica napus L.) in 1993, global plantings have increased resulting in an increased incidence of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib.) de Bary infections. Developments in narrow windrow burning techniques to destroy the seed of multiple herbicide-resistant weeds provide an opportunity to also intercept and heat-treat the S. sclerotiorum inoculum source, termed sclerotia, before it re-enters the soil to infect susceptible crop species in successive years. RESULTS: Preliminary kiln studies determined that a temperature of

Enteral resuscitation with oral rehydration solution to reduce acute kidney injury in burn victims: Evidence from a porcine model.

Intravenous (IV) resuscitation of burn patients has greatly improved outcomes and become a cornerstone of modern burn care. However, the heavy fluids and vascular access required may not be feasible in austere environments, mass casualty, or delayed transport scenarios. Enteral resuscitation has been proposed for these situations; we sought to examine the effectiveness of this strategy on improving burn-induced kidney injury. Anesthetized Yorkshire swine sustaining 40% TBSA full-thickness contact burns were randomized to three groups (n = 6/group): fluid deprivation, ad libitum water access, o…
