Connectivity of the Superficial Muscles of the Human Perineum: A Diffusion Tensor Imaging-Based Global Tractography Study.

Despite the importance of pelvic floor muscles, significant controversy still exists about the true structural details of these muscles. We provide an objective analysis of the architecture and orientation of the superficial muscles of the perineum using a novel approach. Magnetic Resonance Diffusion Tensor Images (MR-DTI) were acquired in 10 healthy asymptomatic nulliparous women, and 4 healthy males. Global tractography was then used to generate the architecture of the muscles. Micro-CT imaging of a male cadaver was performed for validation of the fiber tracking results. Results show that mu…

Attenuating the ear canal feedback pressure of a laser-driven hearing aid.

Microphone placement behind the pinna, which minimizes feedback but also reduces perception of the high-frequency pinna cues needed for soun … coustic damper is placed in the EC. This was verified through benchtop experimentation and in human cadaver temporal bones. The results pave the path towards a wide-bandwidth hearing aid that incorporates an EC-microphone design.

Characterization of Temperature Profiles in Skin and Transdermal Delivery System When Exposed to Temperature Gradients In Vivo and In Vitro.

PURPOSE: Performance of a transdermal delivery system (TDS) can be affected by exposure to elevated temperature, which can lead to unintended safety issues. This study investigated TDS and skin temperatures and their relationship in vivo, characterized the effective thermal resistance of skin, and identified the in vitro diffusion cell conditions that would correlate with in vivo observations. METHODS: Experiments were performed in humans and in Franz diffusion cells with human cadaver skin to record skin and TDS temperatures at room temperature and with exposure to a heat flux. Skin temperat…

Peripheral nervous system involvement in primary burning mouth syndrome--results of a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: The pathophysiology of primary burning mouth syndrome (BMS) has remained enigmatic, but recent studies suggest pathology within the nervous system at multiple levels. This study aimed to investigate in detail the contribution of either focal or generalized alterations within the peripheral nervous system (PNS) in the etiopathogenesis of BMS. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Intraepithelial nerve fiber density (IENFD) of tongue mucosa was assessed in 10 carefully characterized BMS, and the results were compared to 19 age- and gender-matched cadaver controls, 6 with lifetime diabetes. Extensive…

Role of Human Corneal Stroma-Derived Mesenchymal-Like Stem Cells in Corneal Immunity and Wound Healing.

Corneal tissue regeneration is of crucial importance for maintaining normal vision. We aimed to isolate and cultivate human corneal stroma-derived mesenchymal stem-like cells (CSMSCs) from the central part of cadaver corneas and study their phenotype, multipotency, role in immunity and wound healing. The isolated cells grew as monolayers in vitro, expressed mesenchymal- and stemness-related surface markers (CD73, CD90, CD105, CD140b), and were negative for hematopoietic markers as determined by flow cytometry. CSMSCs were able to differentiate in vitro into fat, bone and cartilage. Their gene …

Ultralow-dose computed tomography imaging for surgery of midfacial and orbital fractures using ASIR and MBIR.

The influence of dose reductions on diagnostic quality using a series of high-resolution ultralow-dose computed tomography (CT) scans for computer-assisted planning and surgery including the most recent iterative reconstruction algorithms was evaluated and compared with the fracture detectability of a standard cranial emergency protocol. A human cadaver head including the mandible was artificially prepared with midfacial and orbital fractures and scanned using a 64-multislice CT scanner. The CT dose index volume (CTDIvol) and effective doses were calculated using application software. Noise wa…

Presentation of Anatomical Variations Using the Aurasma Mobile App.

Knowledge of anatomical variations is critical to avoid clinical complications and it enables an understanding of morphogenetic mechanisms. Depictions are comprised of photographs or illustrations often limiting appreciation of three-dimensional (3D) spatial relationships. The purpose of this study is to describe an approach for presenting anatomical variations utilizing video clips emphasizing 3D anatomical relationships delivered on personal electronic devices. An aberrant right subclavian artery (ARSA) was an incidental finding in a routine dissection of an 89-year-old man cadaver during a …

Tibiofemoral contact biomechanics following meniscocapsular separation and repair.

Meniscocapsular separations are often seen in knees with other intra-articular pathology. The consequences of these tears with regard to knee contact mechanics are currently unknown, and the biomechanical advantages of repair have not been measured. We hypothesize that tears to the meniscocapsular junction will cause an increase in tibiofemoral contact pressure and a decrease in contact area, with a return to more normal conditions after repair. 10 fresh-frozen cadaver knees each underwent 10 cycles of axial compressive loading in full extension under three different testing conditions: intact…

Risk of tendon entrapment under a dorsal bridge plate in a distal radius fracture model.

PURPOSE: To determine the risk of iatrogenic damage to the extensor tendons and sensory nerves under a bridge plate along the second versus third metacarpal. METHODS: Using 6 paired (left-right) cadaver forearms-wrists and via a volar approach, we created a distal radius fracture with metaphyseal comminution. We then applied a dorsal distraction plate to either the second or third metacarpal. We next performed dorsal dissection of the hand and wrist over the zone of injury to determine the position of the plate relative to the extensor tendons and sensory nerves. RESULTS: The bridge plate on…

Biomechanical evaluation of a knotless barbed suture repair in a human Achilles tendon rupture model.

BACKGROUND: Knotless barbed sutures are seeing more common use in wound closures and small tendon repairs. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the strength and resistance to gap formation of these sutures in larger tendons, such as the Achilles, compared with conventional repair. METHODS: Six matched pairs of fresh-frozen human cadaver Achilles tendons were transected to simulate a rupture. Six tendons were repaired using a double Bunnell over-the-top technique with Fiberwire, and the matched pairs were repaired using a double Bunnell knotless technique with barbed suture. The tendons w…

Quantitative study on endoscopic endonasal approach to the posterior sino-orbito-cranial interface: implications and clinical considerations.

The posterior sino-orbito-cranial interface is a critical area in the skull base since it represents a gateway to deeper vital regions. Quantification of the surgical freedom for any given point/area is an objective method for comparing in a reproducible way different surgical approaches. Three freshly injected cadaver heads (six sides) were dissected under the magnetic navigation control system. The surgical freedom (SF) and the angle of attack of fixed target points were determined from the ipsilateral nasal fossa, from the contralateral nasal fossa (after posterior septectomy), and after an…
