Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is an gamma of herpes virus affecting exclusively humans, was the first oncogenic virus described and is associated with over seven different cancers. Curiously, the exchange of genes during viral infections has enabled the evolution of other cellular organisms, favoring new functions and the survival of the host. EBV has been co-evolving with mammals for hundreds of millions of years, and more than 95% of adults have been infected in one moment of their life. The infection is acquired primarily during childhood, in most cases as an asymptomatic infection. However, dur

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a serious neoplastic disease with increasing incidence and mortality, accounting for 90% of all liver cancers. Hepatitis viruses are the major causative agents in the development of HCC. Hepatitis A virus (HAV) primarily causes acute infections, which is associated with HCC to a certain extent, as shown by clinicopathological studies. Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) or hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections lead to persistent liver inflammation and cirrhosis, disrupt multiple pathways associated with cellular apoptosis and proliferation, and are the most common vi

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer is caused by oncogenic human papillomaviruses (HR-HPV) and is common among Kenyan women. Identification of factors that increase HR-HPV persistence is critically important. Kenyan women exposed to aflatoxin have an increased risk of HR-HPV detection in cervical specimens. This analysis was performed to examine associations between aflatoxin and HR-HPV persistence.
METHODS: Kenyan women were enrolled in a prospective study. The analytical cohort for this analysis included 67 HIV-uninfected women (mean age 34 years) who completed at least two of three annual study vi

Irreversible electroporation (IRE) ablation is a novel treatment option for localized prostate cancer. Here, we present a case of an abrupt and fatal arrhythmia during the IRE procedure in a prostate cancer patient with an implanted permanent pacemaker. A 78-year-old male patient with a pacemaker due to sick sinus syndrome and syncope was scheduled for IRE prostate ablation surgery under general anesthesia. He had a history of recovering from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) after having been vaccinated against it and recovered without sequalae. Pacemaker interrogation and reprogramming to

The COVID-19 pandemic has created unprecedented hurdles to the delivery of care to patients with cancer. Patients with hematologic malignancies appear to have a greater risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and severe disease due to myelosuppression and lymphopenia. The first challenge, therefore, is how to continue to deliver effective, curative therapy to vulnerable patients and at the same time avoid exposing them, and their health care teams (HCT), to SARS-CoV-2. An additional challenge is the timely completion of the diagnostic and staging studies required to formulate appropriate treatment plans.

Since its first description in 1966, macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) was found to play a critical role in inflammatory and immune responses as well as in disease pathogenesis especially in tumor pathogenesis and cancer progression. MIF is expressed in different cell types and is associated with many disease severity and tumor pathogenesis. Here, we investigated the influence of TLR7 and TLR8 agonist resiquimod (R848), an immune response inducer used as a prophylactic agent for several infectious diseases as well as anticancer agents and vaccine adjuvant on MIF expression in cells

Most of the immunosuppressive therapy-associated excess lymphomas in IBD are due to a loss of control of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. Systemic EBV viral-load monitoring and preemptive treatments are extensively used in the posttransplant setting, but these methods have not yet been evaluated in IBD patients and cannot therefore be recommended in this context. However, the systemic EBV viral load should be measured in cases of unexplained fever, lymphadenopathy or hemophagocytic syndrome, in order to optimize the diagnostics of early EBV-related lymphoproliferations. The risk of hepatosp

In developing countries like India, occurrence of Human papillomavirus (HPV) in cervical cancer as well as in the asymptomatic population was observed to be very high. Studies on HPV prevalence have been conducted in different parts of the country but no data were available from the eastern region of Uttar Pradesh (UP). The present study aimed to determine the status of HPV prevalence and its association with different socio-demographic factors in this population. Prevalence of HPV was investigated in a total of 2424 cervical scrape samples of asymptomatic women. Primer sets from L1 consensus

The question whether prevention in the elderly or in the old is still worthwhile arises frequently in clinical practice. The life expectancy (LE) of elderly persons is often underestimated and ranges for a 65-year-old European person from 17 to 23 years and for an 80-year-old from 8 and 11 years. In the elderly patients with cardiovascular disease, preventive measures are of great benefit. Smoking cessation results in substantial gains in LE and is more effective than most other interventions. Lipid lowering with statins is cost effective and the intensity of low-density lipoprotein cholestero

INTRODUCTION: Genital warts (GW) is one of the most prevalent venereal diseases in Northern Europe today. Previous research has shown that while present, GW can significantly reduce patients' quality of life (QoL). This follow-up study is the first of its kind to explore the possible physical and psycho-sexual long-term effects of having previously had GW.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A qualitative research design was applied using individual interviews with six former GW patients who had been cleared for GW for at least one year. The semi-structured interview guide included questions and issues tha

This article describes the epidemiology of mucosal human papillomavirs (HPV) in adults and children, its mode of transmission and its associated diseases. Over 40 genotypes of HPV infect the epithelial lining of the anogenital tract and other mucosal areas of the body. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection globally, with high prevalences found in both females and males. The predominant route of transmission is via sexual contact, although mother-to-child transmission is also possible. HPV infection may exist asymptomatically or may induce the formation of benign or malignant tu

Cell-based vaccination strategies to induce functional tumor-specific T cells in cancer patients have focused on using autologous dendritic cells. An alternative approach is to use RNA-loaded CD40 activated B cells (CD40-B) that are highly efficient antigen-presenting cells capable of priming naive T cells, boosting memory T-cell responses and breaking tolerance to tumor antigens. The use of tumor RNA as the antigenic payload allows for gene transfer without viruses or vectors and permits major histocompatibility complex (MHC)-independent, multiple-antigen targeting. Here, we use CD40L transfe

UNLABELLED: BCG has been used as a preventive vaccine of tuberculosis worldwide. However, in 1976, Morales et al. reported the effective use against superficial bladder cancer by intravesical administration. In Japan, in July, 1994, Rhone-Poulenc Rorer Japan Inc, started the cooperative clinical studies with Nippon Kayaku Co. Ltd. as an orphan drug. In the phase I/II studies, BCG preparation at 40.5, 81 and 121.5 mg was given intravesically slowly, keeping it for 2 hrs, in the bladder. This was repeated once weekly for 8 weeks. The CR rates were 60, 68.2 and 75% respectively, but there were no

Wilms tumor gene WT1 is expressed at high levels in hematopoietic malignancies, such as leukemias and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), and in various kinds of solid tumors, including lung cancer, and it exerts an oncogenic function in these malignancies. IgM and IgG WT1 antibodies were measured by means of dot blot assay in 73 patients with hematopoietic malignancies (16 acute myeloid leukemia [AML], 11 acute lymphoid leukemia [ALL], 13 chronic myeloid leukemia [CML], and 33 MDS) and 43 healthy volunteers. Immunoglobulin IgM, IgG, and IgM+IgG WT1 antibodies were detected in 40 (54.8%), 40 (54.

The ultraviolet radiation present in sunlight is the primary cause of nonmelanoma skin cancer and has been implicated in the development of cutaneous malignant melanoma. In addition, ultraviolet is immune suppressive and the suppression induced by ultraviolet radiation has been identified as a risk factor for skin cancer induction. Ultraviolet also suppresses the immune response to infectious agents. In most experimental models, ultraviolet is applied to immunologically naive animals prior to immunization. Of equal concern, however, is the ability of sunlight to suppress established immune rea

Sera samples from 111 women, including 73 breast cancer patients and 38 patients with benign diseases of the breast, were examined. These were compared with samples from healthy women or from patients carrying tumors of origin other than breast as controls. This was done to determine whether antibodies against GCDFP-15/gp17, a protein of gross cystic disease fluid also secreted by mammary apocrine tumor cells, could be found. We observed that 2.6% of mammary disease patients affected by benign conditions and 5.5% of patients carrying malignant mammary gland tumors expressed statistically signi
