There have been over 80 documented cases of swallow syncope-a rare form of reflex or neurally mediated syncope-with most cases associated with an underlying esophageal disorder. Here, we describe the first reported case of swallow syncope or presyncope caused by an infectious esophagitis. Polymicrobial intra-abdominal infections (IAIs) are clinically prevalent and cause significant morbidity and mortality, especially those involving fungi. Currently, echinocandins are first-line drugs for treatment of invasive candidiasis. However, data on how serum influences killing activity of echinocandins against uncommon Candida species are limited. Therefore, the killing activity of micafungin in RPMI-1640 and in 50% serum was compared against Candida guilliermondii, Candida lusitaniae, and Candida kefyr. A 45-year-old woman with systemic lupus erythematosus presented with a painless bulky mass on her elbow. Joint fluid analysis showed the presence of a yeast-like organism. Surgical debridement was performed and specimens obtained at surgery showed growth of Candida albicans. Although Candida species are an uncommon cause of infectious arthritis, fungal arthritis should be considered in the patient with predisposing factors.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the microbiological and clinical characteristics of patients with candidemia and analyze their prognostic risk factors.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted for hospitalized patients with candidemia from January 2008 to December 2012 at Affiliated Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University. Pathogen spectrum, resistance pattern, underlying diseases, therapy received and patient prognosis were collected by chart review. The univariate and multivariate Logistic regression analyses were used to determine the prognostic risk factors of candidemia.
