AIM: To analyse the role of genetic susceptibility and environmental factors in the process of esophageal cancer (EC) formation in Xi'an, China.
METHODS: A hospital based case-control study, combined with molecular epidemiological method, was carried out. The antitumor effects of N-(4-hydroxyphenyl)retinamide (4-HPR), and its stable C-linked analog, 4-hydroxybenzylretinone (4-HBR) on the regression of established 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene(DMBA)-induced rat mammary tumors were compared. 4-HBR is a stable and nonhydroyzable derivative which cannot be converted in vivo to retinoic acid (RA). One goal of experimental oncology is to find and test effective chemopreventive substances which can suppress malignant transformation of the cells, their accumulation and invasion. Chronic toxicity and tumorigenicity of purpurin, a natural hydroxyanthraquinone, was examined in two groups of male F344 rats.
