Quantitative resistance level (MIC) of bacterial pathogens (Escherichia coli, Pasteurella multocida, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella sp., Staphylococcus aureus) isolated from chickens and turkeys: national resistance monitoring by the BVL 2004/2005.

In the study 2004/2005, the current quantitative resistance level of Escherichia coli, Pasteurella multocida, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella sp. and Staphylococcus aureus from chickens and turkeys was determined for the first time within the framework of the National Resistance Monitoring of the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL). The objective was to implement a valid database on the basis of which the development and spread of resistance can be evaluated and monitored. During the investigation period from January 2004 to February 2005,927 strains were collected a

Kidney Cell-Adapted Infectious Bronchitis Virus Arkansas Delmarva Poultry Industry Vaccine Confers Effective Protection Against Challenge.

We previously demonstrated that adaptation of an embryo-attenuated infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) Arkansas Delmarva Poultry Industry (ArkDPI)-derived vaccine to chicken embryo kidney (CEK) cells shifted the virus population towards homogeneity in spike (S) and nonstructural protein genes. Moreover, the typical Ark vaccine subpopulations emerging in chickens vaccinated with commercial Ark vaccines were not detected in chickens vaccinated with the CEK-adapted virus. In this study, chickens vaccinated with a low dose (1.6 × 10(3) EID50/bird, where EID50 is 50% embryo infectious dose) of CEK-ad

Disinfection by hydrogen peroxide nebulization increases susceptibility to avian pathogenic Escherichia coli.

BACKGROUND: Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) are the major cause of economic losses in the poultry industry worldwide. Traditionally, antibiotics are used to treat and prevent colibacillosis in broilers. Due to resistance development other ways of preventing/treating the disease have to be found. Therefore during this study the nebulization of low concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was tested in the presence of chickens to lower pathogenicity of APEC. RESULTS: Significantly higher total lesion scores and higher E. coli concentrations were found in the spleen of chickens expose

Characterization of Spleen Transcriptome and Immunity Against Avian Colibacillosis After Immunization With Recombinant Attenuated Salmonella Vaccine Strains.

Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) causes extraintestinal infections in poultry. Vaccines targeting APEC in chickens have been partially successful, but many lack heterologous protection. Recombinant attenuated Salmonella vaccine (RASV) strains can induce broad immunity against Salmonella and be modified to deliver E. coli antigens. Along with vaccine characteristics, understanding the host response is crucial for developing improved vaccines. The objectives of this study were to evaluate host responses to vaccination with an RASV producing E. coli common pilus (ECP) and assess protectio

Attenuation of a recombinant Marek's disease virus lacking the meq oncogene and evaluation on its immune efficacy against Marek's disease virus.

SC9-2 is a recombinant Marek's disease virus (MDV) strain lacking the meq oncogene. Previous study demonstrated that SC9-2 virus provides good protection against challenge with a very virulent MDV rMd5, but it induces immunosuppressive effects in specific pathogen-free (SPF) chickens. In the present study, SC9-2 was serially passaged on chicken embryo fibroblast (CEF) cell cultures. The pathogenicity and immune efficacy of SC9-2/10th and SC9-2/40th against rMd5 were evaluated. Animal experimental results showed that SC9-2/10th and SC9-2/40th showed no lethality or tumorigenicity in SPF chicken

Evaluation of the Salmonella enterica Serovar Pullorum Pathogenicity Island 2 Mutant as a Candidate Live Attenuated Oral Vaccine.

Salmonella enterica serovar Pullorum (S. Pullorum) is a highly adapted pathogen that causes pullorum disease (PD), an important systemic disease of poultry that causes severe economic losses in developing countries. In the interests of developing a safe and immunogenic oral vaccine, the efficacy of a Salmonella pathogenicity island 2 (SPI2)-deleted mutant of S. Pullorum (S06004ΔSPI2) was evaluated in chickens. S06004ΔSPI2 was severely less virulent than the parental wild-type strain S06004 as determined by the 50% lethal dose (LD50) for 3-day-old chickens when injected intramuscularly. Two-day

Adipose tissue fat accumulation is reduced by a single intraperitoneal injection of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma agonist when given to newly hatched chicks.

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARgamma) is a transcription factor that regulates adipocyte differentiation and modulates lipid metabolism in mammals. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the administration of PPARgamma ligands, adipogenic cocktail, or both to newly hatched chicks regulates adipocyte differentiation in vivo and modulates fat deposition in growing broiler chickens. Levels of PPARgamma, CCAAT/enhancer binding protein alpha, and adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein mRNA in the abdominal fat pad of 7-d-old broiler chicks given a single intrap

Intended reduction in formulated net energy density and associated changes in diet composition improved growth performance and breast meat yield in broiler chickens under both cyclic heat stress and thermoneutral conditions.

This experiment investigated the effects of diets formulated to two net energy densities (2360 versus 2260 kcal/kg) and the impacts of cyclic heat-stress on the performance of broiler chickens via a 2 × 2 factorial array of treatments. Cyclic heat-stress consisted of the daily exposure of birds to an environmental temperature of 33°C for 8 hours as opposed to thermo-neutral conditions. Parameters assessed included growth performance from 14 to 35 days post-hatch, carcass traits, breast-meat myopathies, jejunal and ileal digestibility coefficients of starch, gross energy and protein (N). Cyclic

New Strategies for the Prevention and Control of Foodborne Mycotoxins: Glycyrrhizic Acid Enhances Antioxidant Capacity and Modulates the ROS/NF-κB/NLRP3 Pathway to Treat Zearalenone-Induced Lung Injury in Chickens.

Zearalenone is an estrogen-like mycotoxin produced by Fusarium fungi. Growing evidence shows that ZEA causes multisystem damage via oxidative stress. Glycyrrhizic acid (GA), from Glycyrrhiza glabra, has anti-inflammatory/antioxidant properties. The mechanisms of GA and ZEA in chicken pulmonary oxidative stress and inflammation remain elusive. Therefore, we established zearalenone-exposed chicken lung and CP-II cells models. ZEA exposure triggers an inflammatory cascade via the ROS-NF-κB axis, activating NLRP3 inflammasomes and promoting the release of proinflammatory factors. It also increased

A novel cost-effective methodology for Campylobacter isolation from human stool and chicken sample matrix containing extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli.

Campylobacter jejuni and C. coli are major causes of bacterial gastroenteritis, but their isolation from samples contaminated with extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli remains challenging. This study evaluated the performance of modified charcoal cefoperazone deoxycholate agar (mCCDA) and Preston broth, supplemented with different concentrations of a commercially available pharmaceutical-grade tazobactam-piperacillin (TP) combination for the selective isolation of Campylobacter. After determining the optimum concentration of TP to inhibit the growth of ESBL-producing

Phenotypic and genomic characterization of Salmonella isolates from pre-cooked seasoned chicken: predominant serovars and associations between mobile genetic element and antimicrobial resistance dissemination.

Pre-cooked seasoned chicken has become a mainstream processed poultry product worldwide, yet the pervasive contamination of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Salmonella poses severe threats to public health and food safety. Despite growing market demand, comprehensive surveillance of phenotypic and genomic multidrug resistance dynamics in this commodity remains limited. In this study, 424 commercially available pre-cooked seasoned chicken samples were collected from 12 provincial-level administrative regions across China during 2024-2025. Of 424 samples, 75 were culture-positive for Salmonella (17.69%

Early In Ovo Sex Identification of Chicken Embryos Using a Dual-Stage Difference-Enhanced Spectral Fusion Network Based on Visible-Near-Infrared Transmission Spectroscopy.

Early in ovo sex identification is important for improving hatchery resource utilization; however, sex-related optical differences are weak during early embryonic development and exhibit clear stage dependence. In this study, longitudinal visible-near-infrared transmission spectra were acquired from 1600 fertilized pink-shelled eggs of Bashang Long-tailed chickens across four independent incubation batches during incubation days 1-7. Before model development, 200 eggs were reserved as a fixed internal hold-out test set, while the remaining 1400 eggs were used for exploratory incubation-day and

Imported Retail Beef and Chicken Meat Products Serve as Reservoirs for Emerging Antibiotic-Resistant Pathotypes of Escherichia coli in Pristine Areas Free From Agricultural Activity.

Increasing attention is being directed toward the role of retail meat in introducing pathogens and antibiotic-resistant bacteria into local food supplies. This study characterized the antibiotic resistance (AR) and virulence of E. coli isolates from chicken and beef (n = 109) imported for retail sale in Kasane, Botswana. In this relatively pristine environment, commercial beef and chicken production is absent, resulting in reliance on imports, creating concerns that multidrug-resistant (MDR) and pathogenic E. coli may be introduced through the food supply sourced from distant regions. E. coli
